Best wishes with those books. I also do metal detecting and managed to find a Bronze Age hoard that will end up in Lancaster, Museum.

The Maria Theresa biography looks interesting, probably has a good section in the middle of portraits and other illustrations.

Hi Bill - These are the Q1 books for me: Thebes: The Forgotten City of Ancient Greece, Weavers, Scribes, and Kings: A New History of the Ancient Near East, A History of Ancient Rome in 100 Lives, The Extraordinary Voyage of Pytheas the Greek, Celts: The History and Legacy of One of the Oldest Cultures in Europe, and finally - Cleopatra: A Life, I do not expect to read all - but they are on my pile of possibilities. I looked at the PUP 75% off books sale but didn't buy -- 2024 is my year of reading what I own. So far my the books all seem to be outstanding. Happy reading.

Wow, those are some good titles. Thebes, Pytheas, and the Amanda Podany book were all great. Hope you enjoy them!

That sounds like quite a stack of books. I love having choices in my reading, so I understand putting in more than will get read. Nothing wrong with that. I hope you enjoy the ones you choose. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

Hey Bill! Nice video. Princeton University Press is great, I get a ton of my nature books from them. Good picks for books. A review of Eric Cline's book I think was my first or second ever booktube video lol. Happy reading, hope you enjoy them!

Thanks Vin! It was a pretty good haul from Princeton University Press. I am very thankful to them. I am thinking that after I get done reading the Maria Theresa book I should use it as a door stopper. It's heavy enough. The 1898 book should be intriguing. I enjoy learning about the era. I find it fascinating. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

I haven’t read anything about Maria Theresa and that book looks interesting. I love biographies and memoirs

Thanks Vickie. Yeah, I am in the same boat. I am a blank slate and I love biographies. I hope the author is a good story teller because this is going to take awhile. It's a big book. So big, in fact, that I don't believe I will try to read with it in bed because if I was to drop it I would probably have a nasty black eye or a broken nose. Although, it would fill in for my weight lifting program ... that might be something to think about. Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend.

Dang, that Maria Theresa biography is a monster. Hope you enjoy! I've read a fair amount of theorizing about the Bronze Age Collapse, but I haven't picked up 1187 yet. It seems very well regarded though. Thanks for the video, and have a good one!

Hey Bryan! Guess what ... we are out of school ... again. Ice on the roads this time. This is beginning to be a pain in the neck. Anyway, I am very excited about the Maria Theresa book. I hope that I can get to it this year. I am going to try my hardest to get to 1187. It is obviously much smaller and I have heard good things about it. Everybody seems to be reading it. I guess I want to get on the bandwagon. Right now I am enjoying David McCullough's biography on Truman. I am buddy reading it with Patrice Jones and it is a huge book. 1000 pages. Who knows when I will get done with it?! Anyway, thanks for watching. Hope you have a good day.

I’m both curious and skeptical about that book on the Sea Peoples. If the author brings new information, that’s fantastic. Something for me to keep in mind if there’s a sale. 😂

Thanks David. I understand what you mean. However, I am such a novice in this time period that it will all be new to me. I will have to do the cross referencing as I go. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

Bill, this is a stellar few books! Given a chance I would’ve nabbed all 3 of them. I did check out the book on Maria Theresa at one of my usual online stores…a little expensive for my January budget however. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on these books!

Thanks Susan! They are great titles that I can't wait to dive into. I gotta figure out where they will be on the TBR list. It is a full list! I am excited about the Maria Theresa book because it will definitely help me in teaching my World History class at school. Good stuff. Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend.

Nice historical haul. Size doesn't matter! 1177BC does sound awesome. Here in Georgia the 12th Century AD was the Golden Age.

Thanks Jim! It was a wonderful haul, beautiful books. I have never looked into Georgian history. That is one that I will need to explore. Thanks for the thought provoking fact. Thank you for watching. Have a great weekend. By the way -- I love the one minute reviews. I saw the one on the Star Trek book last night. Good stuff. Short, sweet, and to the point.

@@billruttenberg Georgian history is not known widely outside Georgia. Although one Georgian, Stalin made a massive impact on World History, he was born in the Georgian town of Gori. But that is not something to boast about, vast swathes of the Georgian intelligentsia were eliminated in the purges of the 1930s. Further back in prehistory, Georgia has a plausible claim to be the origin of winemaking in the world (a claim disputed by Armenia), archaeological evidence of winemaking in the region dates back 8000 years to 6000BC. Georgian history is the story of invasions and resistance to invasions, from Persians, Turks, Mongols and Russians.
@billruttenberg
@billruttenberg 6 месяцев назад
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff Thanks Jim. I knew about Stalin, but I didn't know about wine making. That's interesting! Georgia sits in an area that is a crossroads of the world doesn't it? That always leads to lots of invasions and lots of cultural diffusion. Creates a unique history. I need to look more into it. Have a great week Jim.

Mr. Ruttenberg, sorry to bother you, but do you all have a list of the books for your history read-a-thon?
@billruttenberg
@billruttenberg 4 месяца назад
No, it only has time frames to work within. We have all came up with different book ideas but nothing is a set reading. We wanted it to be more open ended so that people could have more freedom to read what they wanted. 1st Quarter (January - March): Prehistory -- 500 A.D. 2nd Quarter (April - June): 500 -- 1500 3rd Quarter (July - September): 1500 -- 1820 4th Quarter (October - December): 1820 - Present Hope this helps. Thank you for watching. Have a great weekend.
