I've had a Bible for as long as I can remember (childhood). I cannot believe how I never knew the Bible has an answer to everything! I would put my dusty Bible aside and read motivational books , be motivated for few minutes and go empty again. With the Bible is different, very different. This is God's Word people! Asking God the questions that He already answered. Leaving His Word in the house while I go out in the world searching for answers. I got bitten so many times searching for everything that God explains in a dusty book next to my bed.

@johnwalker1058

Only paying attention to how it reveals an apparent pointlessness of life, it can appear to be quite a downer. However, when one notices the grains of hope sprinkled in, the misery may then fade away, banished by hope and a renewed and fortified joy in the same way darkness is banished and retreats away in the presence of a shining light. Those bits of hope point the frustrated and downtrodden soul to God as the solution to the problems presented in Ecclesiastes. Though major apparent sources of joy and meaning in life, such as wealth, power, status, or pleasure...etc., fail to bring true joy and meaning, they can still provide some. Additionally, by pointing out that God, out of His sovereign control of divine providence, allows people to enjoy these things and gain joy and meaning from them, by a "transitive property of deriving joy and meaning," the reader may realize that God is ultimately the source of joy and meaning in life. If these things provide joy and meaning, but those things were provided by God, then it seems that God ultimately provided the joy and meaning a person gains in life. Then comes the final grain of hope, that loving the Lord and keeping His commandments as the duty of man is the true meaning of life in which true joy and meaning may be provided. Meanwhile, those other things alone only provide temporary glimpses of the true joy and meaning of life, as "people drink water from wells, but the water that Jesus offers is of a quality in which those who drink from Jesus will never thirst again," having gained true and complete fulfillment. Also, this all comes out of Ecclesiastes alone. When one compares to how perfect obedience to Godly law and wisdom in Proverbs does not account for all of life's complexities, and Ecclesiastes reveals how some of these things sometimes go wrong in a life and world that is not always fair, one is even more greatly compelled to wonder why this is so? Why is life like this? Why is there death, unfairness, suffering...etc? This is explained when one looks back within the entire Bible, back to Genesis, when God told Adam and Eve and the serpent how their sins had cursed the world and themselves. Through Ecclesiastes, we see more clearly what God meant. For example, work was said to be made more difficult. For example, without a sense of purpose and meaning, work does become more tedious, wearisome, and burdensome. Another example: death was the ultimate result of sin. Death is the cause of much of the "vexation of spirit" one experiences when contemplating the meaning of life, as its equalizing nature makes meaningless the distinctions that exist among people, its finaliy makes efforts and chasing after things pointless, since they will be gone soon anyway. Death diminishes the joy and meaning of life quite a bit as a result. This is also explained when one looks forward to other parts of the Bible, such as the 4 Gospels, when God as Jesus, reveals and expounds the truths He had been sharing with humanity since Adam and Eve. For example, there is the claim in John that Jesus is the way the truth and the life and that no man may come to the father any other way. There is no answer, no meaning of life outside of Jesus, and therefore God as well, since Jesus is God. From all this and more, we see that Ecclesiastes, as well as each other work in the Bible, is like a puzzle piece of truth, that when fitted with the other revealed truths and divine wisdom of the mind of God, reveals the nature of God (in terms of His loving goodness) and His redemption plan for Humanity, (which saves His most beloved creation and vindicates His loving good nature). Hope this helps! 😊

This Book has helped me so much with my mental health. I am an over thinker and I obsess over everything I do (especially in my ministry). It has been so comforting to read “Everything is meaningless/hevel” because it reminds me that I can’t work myself up into a frenzy because, at the end of the day, as long as God has approved me, nothing else matters. Maybe that sounds sad to some, but it has helped me so much.

I don't know about anyone else, but I find the book of ecclesiastes extremely comforting. Right now, I'm in University studying engineering. I find the program quite stressful, not necessarily because of the amount of work I do, but by the amount of work OTHERS do. When others are always staying up in the wee hours of the night working, I feel like I have to too. But at the same time, I feel like everything I do is like a vapour, it doesn't matter. Why is everyone working so hard for a career, for success? As a Christian, I want to work for something that lasts. I enjoy engineering, but I don't want it to consume my life. It's just hard because some people get so caught up in one goal, and forget to consider the big picture of eternity. So I guess I like ecclesiastes because it confirms my preconceived notions, haha

Honestly as a Christian, I've always stressed and become anxious and life's deepest questions. How to comprehend eternity, why do bad things happen to good people etc. I always felt like no matter how much I studied, I never found the answer. I never truly felt like I would have peace unless these questions are answered. I wanted to know anything and everything there is to know about God. My soul was uneasy and I was restless. It made it really tough to walk in confidence with Christ. Ecclesiates 12:9-14 has become one of the most important verses in my entire life. It quickly helped me realize that seeking to figure out these great questions about the mysteries of life wouldn't get me towards where I wanted. I based my faith on how much I knew the answers to life's greatest questions. I do belive research and intellectual thinking is important in the Christian faith, but knowing everything is impossible. Somethings... Like grasping eternity or knowing the motive behind God's actions are impossible for us as humans to guage (although eternity still freaks me out a Lil bit). Even Job never figured out why he suffered. Even if Job genuinely wanted to know he wasn't able to and simply would never have been able to comprehend it. We simply must have faith in him alone. If we did know the answers to life's greatest questions... I then raise the question whether believing in Jesus is truly faith. Faith requires realizing that even though you don't know everything... U know the one who does is keeping u in his arms. Don't stress your whole life about knowing everything. It is good to inquire and to learn, but don't stress it. Simply rely on him and keep his commandments. People have tried for thousands of years. Knowing life greatest answers aren't feasible. Proverbs 3:5 says “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding."

I see this is 2 years old, but I will comment anyway. 😬😬😬 The question “Why do bad things happen to good people?” The same question I’ve heard my whole life especially by Christians. I believe I have an answer to that. That question implies that Godly rewards are based on works; and the belief that good life blessed and protected by God is rewarded by good works. If I’m good, then my life will be good. We never see a place in scripture, where good things are based on being “good.” We see God is a rewarder, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Without quoting many scriptures about how to receive blessing and protection, I believe the blessed life comes from a life of seeking God, Godly love, forgiveness, prayer and faith based on scripture that’s in your heart. Now the answers to Job, they’re clear in our face, but the problem is bad teachers keep telling us how to interpret Job. I’m KJV preferred but I have a Complete Jewish Bible sitting next to me, so I will use this. In Job 1:5 we see Job said “my sons might have sinned and blasphemed God in their thoughts. This is what Iyov (Job) did every time.” First thing I see here is fear. Job is offering sacrifices out of fear. Should fear sacrifices be acceptable to God? Shouldn’t it be based on a repentant heart? Another thing I see, adult children. They have their own houses and servants, we can agree these are adults or some type of age of reason. Yes? Ok, shouldn’t they be offering sacrifices for their own sins? How can a father force repentance for his grown children? He can’t, Job is just so deep in his own fear. Job 3:24(25) “for the thing I feared has overwhelmed me, what I dreaded has happened to me.” There is the complete answer to all of this. He didn’t believe God would protect him. He had faith in his fears, and obviously played this scenario out in his mind over and over. What’s the opposite of faith? Fear. If faith is the substance of things hoped for in God and the evidence of things not seen. Then fear is the substance of things dreaded in the devil, and evidence of things not seen. Basically, fear is opening the door to the enemy. “For God hath not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.” Notice “spirit of fear.” Fear is a spirit, not an emotion as we’re taught in school. Fear can be resisted. That means Job had been entertaining a spirit of fear more than he had faith in God’s protection. The short answer of why did this happen to Job? You reap what you sow! It’s good to ask the tough questions. Most pastors and people shy away from them and conclude (escape the answer with) God is mysterious. Put them before you and expect answers from God, He will give you all the answers. 🙂

@KristiTalk
@KristiTalk Год назад
@@Shadrake You’re right! You do need answers to everything. God will answer you. I have never failed to receive an answer to why. I will be honest I did have to wait many years to hear why to several issues because of anger problems. I did feel a heavy conviction to handle it during that time, and I didn’t know they were related, but as soon as I did answers came. It’s hard to know exactly why you’re not hearing your answers yet. Many years ago, I used to pray “Lord, please prepare me to receive an answer.” Now when something happens, I ask the Lord, “Where did I miss it?” As in, where did I miss my direction? Even with other people, I ask, but I had to get to place to learn to keep my mouth SHUT when I get an answer. I’m like you, I gotta know WHY to everything and have a hard time moving on without it. Matthew 7:7-8 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. I believe we have to get to place where we believe the Word works or admit to ourself we don’t. If the Word isn’t working, the fault is on our end. For me to hear answers I had to mature in Christ; be ready to hear my faults, not blame God, not be sinfully angry at others, not be discouraged and not run from God. I’m not saying these are your problems, but just encouraging you to change tactics. Ask God to show you why you can’t get your answers. He loves you, He wants you to hear from Him. That’s part of the close relationship He wants to have with us through Christ.

It seems there and within your grasp, until you reach it and it pops into nothingness. I love how in Ecclesiastes you see the meaninglessness of life, and yet there is a glimpse of the meaning hiding behind what is meaningless. And that meaning is fleshed out in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

When you truly think about it life is meaningless. No matter what we do or how much we accomplish in this world. It all comes to nothing. Time will eventually erase all of us. But we as Christ followers are admonished to not put our hope in this world. We're just wafaring strangers here. We are to store up treasures in heaven, where we'll have them for all eternity. Sometimes, actually more than not, I think about how fleeting this life truly is, and it's a depressing thought. Then when I think of Almighty God's promises that he has for us in eternity, which is our real existence, this life is just a very very brief stop, my heart is renewed and full of joy when I think about a place where we'll be with our Lord and savior for all eternity.

@@miker1582 that's simple. Our purpose for being created was to serve God. But we've been deceived and lied to that this world is all about what we have now and how much we can accomplish here. We serve him by reading and abiding in his word. It's truly the best way. The reason we are so disappointed in this life, in things i.e possessions is because we know in our hearts that no matter how much we strive to accomplish and accrue, it all comes to nothing. God said in his word that if we followed Christ we'd suffer persecution and hardship. But for true believers we know that our inheritance is not of this world and it's eternal.compared to a few fleeting years we have here. So much more awaits us on the other side of eternity. @@kevinharrissr5255 I truly appreciate you taking the time to answer. As a short personal background, for context, I am a christian (ortodox), both my parents are strong believers, my relatives are in general. It's just that through reading a ton, personal experience and in the end gut feeling, I started to loose faith that God actually exists as the bible depicts it. I stopped believing in the resurrection or even Jesus having been born from a virgin Mary. Coming back to my question and your answer, I feel like you wrote beautiful ideas, but somehow parallel to my question.. I am not 'disappointed in this life' as you say. I would actually be at peace and living fully if I knew God truly didn't exist. I don't see life without God as meaningless as the one without him, not at all. Why such statements? Because without God, you accept the hazard of life as it happens, a complete miracle we developed as human beings in a Universe that is unfathomably huge, on this planet, and the way we did it. And then I derive meaning from what surrounds me: having and growing a child, working to help others, challenging the mind through reading and the body through a fitness regime and so on. Everything per se is without meaning of course, the absolute beauty being that through the mind you, yourself are able to give meaning to anything you choose. However, through believing in God, if I have to accept that he truly does exists and acts, and has acted through what the bible and the religious history affirms, than I begin to start asking why did this God put me trough this meaningful life in the first place, if he doesn't want as here, but in the "eternal life". What's with this incredibly complicated middle ground between us and him? I am much more at peace without him than with, mainly because of this reason (and many more less important ones). How do you find peace in knowing that God puts you through this meaningful life? This was my question, and was sparked by your initial post.

When I was a baby Christian it was a struggle to pick myself up after reading Ecclesiastes. It’s changed my perspective of life. In a depressing sort of way. That everything under the sun is vain. One moment we're alive, the other we are dead and alone. Jesus Christ is our only sense of fulfilment🧡

@@lindalatelyI understand that. God doesn’t have us here to simply suffer. We are called to enjoy the gifts, He’s given us, but that’s the key. Remembering, He has blessed them to us. Being grateful when we have little, and being grateful when we have much. Always, placing God first, and always thanking God first. Knowing He is our God. He has provided, He has made a way, and just living with Him, and loving Him one step at a time. Anything can happen at any moment. Holding on to anything but Christ is the problem. When we keep our eyes focused on Him, it allows us to experience His fullness in every season. And that, is the fear and wisdom of God. Something God has been teaching me recently. Stay focused on our Father, and grateful in all circumstances, and He will always make a way. He will always be there. Our life here is but of hevel, but our life afterwards is far more abundant with Him then we could ever imagine. One beautiful day at a time friend. 💜🙏🏻☺️

We as human beings have killed the Son of God and incarnate that came to not condemn the world but to save the world but in his most torturous, painful, and horrible moment before Christ Jesus died he begged to the Father to forgive humans for they act in ignorance and unbelief. 3 days after he died he came back from the dead conquering sin and death and showing humanity God's unlimited love, grace, and mercy. Then he offers us everlasting life, love, peace, and salvation to those that simply believe in him hence why this is the Good News or in my opinion the most perfect news humans had in their history. Through Christ, death is life, darkness is light, hopelessness is hope, hate is love, meaningless is meaningful. I will just share this here. I’m still seeking God’s revelation but I started reading Ecclesiastes yesterday and it drew my mind back to a dream I had about 3-4 months ago. I won’t go much into the details of the dream but in one part of it, I climbed up some stairs amongst hundreds of other people who were students graduating with me. We were trying to get our group pictures taken. I was trying to find a spot on one of the stairs to sit on but it seemed everywhere was full so I kept climbing up. There were two groups of us. Facing the camera, on the right side at the very top the sun shined very brightly. Almost blinding. And on the left side with the other group of students was a really heavy shade. I managed to find a spot and I sat down on the right side. The sun was so bright that I couldn’t even see the camera. But I thought to myself “The sun is bright so I will definitely be noticed on the picture either way.” After the picture was taken, I looked at the photo and I couldn’t even find myself considering I was one of the few that had the sun beaming at them. In fact, no one’s face could be traced be it under the sun or under the shade. Plus, there were so many of us. Then a voice spoke to me saying “You are one of many and your life is like a passing wind and you will soon be forgotten”. I woke up shook and saddened. Yet again, a hard pill to swallow but Ecclesiastes highlights it well, I think. I have been asking God for a revelation and I strongly believe I’m getting there. All in his timing. I just wanted to share. I hope you find answers. Be blessed.

This book brought a lot of tremble in my heart, I had just decided to give it my all to the father or try to at least for once in for all, because I was probably the angriest person you could even meet, and one time I was like “enough” I’ve always known about him and always get like he was with me, but I was miserably angry at him for that my family was always stressed about rent or bills or death and any of that grief, I could never see a change in life even though we were slowly getting more stuff, even though I was blessed from the start, I ignored the blessings, but I said that he will take away all my burdens if I bring them to him, so I did, been like a week or so, I feel weird everyday, voices in my head, mines, and probably his, when I read this book I thought to my self “I’m an 18 year old boy who just wants to be blessed with riches so he can also bless, but if everything is meaningless, then should I just die broke?” Money has always been a problem, so I just want to get rid of that, and now that I can you’re telling me that it’s meaningless? I’m still a bit confused, but then I talked with the father and I came to a realization that, dying broke or rich is meaningless, if you don’t walk with him, the point of life is to die for and with, because the real prize is heaven, but the human mind can’t fit that into their heads because of all the grief that comes with death and how in love we are with worldly things

I really got into this book last night. It’s wisdom is top tier and it’s a shame most don’t talk about it. It talks about accepting the entropy of the world, and the confirmation bias, and paradoxal interpretations people and the world have. Most do things solely for an outcome, most have such a hypothetical mindset they can’t be antithetical enough to see the beauty even in the dire. He says focus on the righteousness of God, that’s all that matters make that a life style.. all will be given to you, it may not be given as the world things given means. But peace Focus on what you can control place your anxieties there not in the duality of the mind to control, look for certainty, or approval in things outside of yourself. Easier said then done but whew!! So Good!

Ecclesiastes was my favorite book when I discovered it in high school. I felt this disconnect between the life I was told I ought to want and my world view that this is all just temporary. It took me another 15 years to apply it to my life. Looking back as an adult who's embraced this life style (as much as God's grace allows), it's awe inspiring the depth and beauty of the the Bible's wisdom. Many in the post-Christian world think of the Bible as this crude book of fairy-tales. If they could only know the very thoughts they likely struggle with alone in the quiet of their minds at night were talked about and understood by Biblical authors thousands of years ago and it's these very struggles the Bible is speaking into with profound insight - maybe they'd finally take an interest in seeing what it has to say. For the western church, these words are extremely important as syncretism of materialism creeps into church culture - we need to remember you can't take it with you.

Absolutely my favorite book. The rich and the poor inherit the same worms.

This really just changed my life if the Bible project wasn't here I don't know how I would be able to follow and understand the word of god my brain never focuses long enough to take anything from my readings the Bible project breaks everything down for simple minds like mine and I love it thank you !

I always loved Ecclesiastes. It's perhaps my favorite book in the Old Testament.

Discovering the wisdom books have taken initiative for me to move forward. Being in a dark place for a while, these books (Ecclesiastes) specifically, has made me sob like a child. Love god, as he is the only one that can guide us.

Gonna start reading this book today. Wish me luck! So glad I watched this video before reading so I don't get utterly confused by the word Hevel.

As a non-Christian/ non-Jew, Ecclesiastes is perhaps my favorite book of the Bible. It's one of the few that are worth anything in my opinion. (Everything else being superstitious or of interest only to the Jews or the Christians). Ecclesiastes has wisdom for all humans.
@Marlaina
@Marlaina 2 года назад
Jesus should be of interest to all humans because only through him you have eternal life and get back to the God who created us. You can choose to reject that message, but the Bible, written by many many authors separated by thousands of years, all point consistently to the Messiah who saves us from the wrath of God. That is no coincidence or superstition, that is divinely orchestrated. God will judge *everyone* not just Jews and Christians. The Christians and Messianic Jews are the ones who will be spared.

@@Marlaina I'm saying, one needn't change their religion to appreciate the content of Ecclesiastes. A Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Taoist, Jain, Confucian, or Shintoist, might read Ecclesiastes and think it to be one of their own books

@@Marlaina By the way- if you want to strengthen your faith, check out Tovia Singer. He makes a lot of good, Biblically-founded points, that if you as a Christian can address, will make you a much stronger Christian. His Bible knowledge is extensive (both Old & New Testaments).

Your translation for Hevel gives the book such a different meaning than "meaningless"! Thank you.

I learned this by reading the short histories of some of my ancestors. They all suffered in their lives, they all died. But their family and faith in God is what was most important in the end. It makes my troubles a little easier to bare to know that my great great great grandmother dealt with life's problems too.

I very much appreciate the rational, intuitive and non-dogmatic analysis that the Bible Project brings to these analyses. Well done!

My favorite book of the bible. I argue that this is the first existential work.
