Just wondering; I was under the impression that the normal procedure for Medieval manuscript production was that the text was done first, then the gilding and finally the coloured decoration. Bearing in mind that it would have been a workshop production where the various aspects would have been executed by different people. Was order a function of the fact that in this particular demonstration all the steps were being done by the same artist?

Text and guiding would have been done prior to the illumination of the piece, I'm just very impatient and used to prefer doing what I considered the fun part first :)

This is so beautiful, how did you draw the border and did you paint it in watercolours or gouache, I would so love to learn how to do thst

Margaret Brownhill I took it from an extant piece from a book of hours, the side by side of my recreation and the original are at the end. So I took my light pad and traced the boarder. I use watercolours but gouache also works. The caligraphy is using a fountain pen and coloured inks and the black detailing is done with india ink and a dip pen. :)

Most excellent work! Could you tell me the pen/nib sizes you are using? My goal this year is learn calligraphy and particularly Illuminated manuscripts and marginalia. So I"m looking for the tools needs for such work.

I used a Speedball brand size C6 dip pen for the black calligraphy, for the coloured calligraphy I used a Sheaffer brand fountain calligraphy pen in the size "small" (they use three sizes in their fountain pen kits, small, medium and large and the small was roughly the same size as the Speedball C6). You should be able to get either of these items at your local art store (I use Michaels for most of my supplies).

Does not look like my reply went through so take 2...Thank you for the update. I though one of the pens looked like a Lamy Joy. I'm getting into the fountain pens and came across some Pilot Parallels. I'm heading to a local store to see whats up with thoses, they look interesting. Thanks again....I think I might have a speedball set...to the attic.
