A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen first published in 1879 was, at one point, the most frequently performed play in the world and has continued to be performed regularly throughout the 20th and into the 21st century. In addition to its popularity with the public, many scholars list Ibsen right after Shakespeare as the greatest playwright in history. Ibsen, like Shakespeare, holds a mirror up to life by creating situations where his audience is forced to look at itself and its underlying assumptions. In A Doll's House, Ibsen introduces us to Dora, who occupies her husband's home like a doll in a dollhouse. She does everything the men around her have always told her to do, never bothering to truly think for herself. And when the most noble act she has ever performed comes to be seen by the man she is sacrificing for as irresponsible and dangerous, she is forced to look inside for the answers. Her internal struggle results in a discussion about the nature of womanhood and the value of the individual. As Nora explains her intellectual journey and the conclusions she has drawn, she resolves to leave her family and repair her own mind and soul. Controversial, insightful, thought-provoking and persuasive, this play will force you to take a closer look at who you are what you truly stand for.

The ending is what for me makes this play stand out. There were many authors at this time who wrote about women who in one way or another broke the moral code of female behavior. Know your place or die, Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, Tess Duberville Miss Juliet , Miss Daisy , House of Mirth etc....Along comes Ibsen who allows the woman to grow, make a independent choice and to live on, the future is open for her . He does not condem her to death, he just makes her leave her husband, the end. This was the first ever, and that is important.

The law at the time said the mother had no right to her children, who are essentially the husband's property. That's why she leaves them and why it's a hard choice.

So disappointed, I visited your site, and to my surprise you believe that godlessness is ill-moral. I'm a life-time Atheist, also a graduate student working on my masters in philosophy, if you would ever like a conversion or a debate that would lead to your conversion let me know.

Ryan, thanks for your comment. I didn't say that godlessness is immoral, I said that schools are failing our students by presenting a Godless and morally vacant approach to education. I don't know how much you understand about the history of American education but I've studied it for 15 years. The way material is presented in the schools, the fact that students can't express their honest beliefs there unless they are non-religious, the fact that we don't focus on original writings and documents to teach history and many other issues are a real problem educationally. If you're studying philosophy, you're hopefully being trained in some wonderful reasoning skills but reason isn't the only way of discovering truth or knowing something is real and right. I'm glad you're thinking but believe me, as far as "conversion" goes, I don't believe you could show me anything about atheism I haven't already read or learned about. Thanks for the offer though :). Happy studying!

Nobody has ever had an original idea. We are all virtual beings in a simulation created by people thousands of years in the future, who are themselves virtual beings in a simulation created by people (not sure if they're human anymore by this point) in an even more distant future, who are _themselves_ virtual beings... Well, you get the idea. The only _real_ person in this drama is me. That's how I was programmed. Q.E.D.
