Many fantasy novels exist. Very few though are a good fantasy story that also tells the story of someone attending a larp. In Guardians you have both.
The book splits itself between a grand fantasy tale set in the universe of UK Fest Larp: Empire. For the uninitiated Empire events are currently the largest LARP Events in the UK. Whilst also telling the story of someone who is experiencing larp for the very first time.
The two tales interweave nicely. The largest portion is the fantasy story. The story set at Empire is exceptional as it shows the physical and emotional impact of being at the event. We see the protaganist becoming a member of larp community and understanding what makes larp special. I think its perhaps the best depiction of modern larp that I've read.
