I love King, but he and I have very different approaches to writing.

Yeah, same here. I like to utilize tools from both camps. Sometimes I will five head first into the narrative dramatic action if the structure and characters of the story seem solid enough. If not, I will utilize some of the tools of outlining. It just depends on the needs of the story.
