Book Review: P38 Pistol - Spreewerk Production

Available from Checkpoint Charlie's:
(sorry, but you will have to Google it - RU-vid does not allow links to sites that also sell firearms)
I initially put off getting a copy of Jan Balcar and Ron Clarin's book on the Spreewerk P38 because, well, I assumed it was just about Spreewerk. Upon finally reading it, I discovered that it is actually a very well-rounded history of the P38 as a whole, with particular extra attention given to Spreewerk. Originally written in Czech, it includes a great deal of information about the the city of Grottau where the Spreewerk factory was located. It also includes several sections on the other manufacturing done by Spreewerk, including a section on the VG-2 rifle.
The book does a great job covering the development of the P38 in detail as well as its production. The specific variations made by Spreewerk are obviously a focal point, but reading just this book will provide a good overall understanding of the gun. For those who do not want to shell out $500+ for a set of Warren Buxton's books, this would be my recommendation for the single best P38 book available. Krutzek's recent work is a good companion to get details on the Walther and Mauser subtypes, but it provides much less background and context than Balcar and Clarin do.
Unfortunately, this volume is mostly out of print today, and will be more difficult to find once Checkpoint Charlie's sells out their remaining stock.

One thing I love of Ian's book reviews is his thumbing through the book giving a direct idea of the contents.

Literally bought a march '44 manufacture spreewerk p38 last week. Interesting timing.
@silverfingerthesilverstack5062
I had one for 10 years its mint, the finish is like a ploughed field with all the tooling marks lol but I still love it, is yours the same, mines a December 1944 manufacture.
@JohnDoe-uc5iu
@JohnDoe-uc5iu 5 лет назад
@@silverfingerthesilverstack5062 yeah mine isn't mint at all lol. It's been nickel plated a long time ago, probably by the guy who brought it back. There's a little bit of corrosion through the plate near the safety, and general wear but I like it and I'm happy to have my first handgun :)
@silverfingerthesilverstack5062
@@JohnDoe-uc5iu Saying that my P38 is far better finished than my 1942 CZ27, that thing is roughly made, seen better last ditch japanese rifles lol.

I once owned a Spreewerks P38. It was definitely not as finished as the Mauser.

It is now February 2021 and I just bought a copy of this book from Checkpoint Charlie’s, so it is still available as of today. A couple of weeks ago I bought a bring back mint Spreewerk Z block (February 1945) P38 and original holster from a local collector and this book sounds like a great way to learn a lot about its history. Thanks for the review.

I have a Spreewerk P38. Picked it up at a pawn shop a few years back for not much money. Still one of my favorite pistols.

hey ian, i really enjoy your videos.one of my first favorite books was the janes firearms recognition guide by ian hogg when i was about 14 so it really awesome to see some of the very unusual guns i read about in the books over and over again and learning the history of them.i especially love the guns that are almost unheard of. keep up the good work! kenneth A (sorry signed in under my wifes account)

I actually live few kilometers away from that factory, sadly parts of it were demolished in last few years. Also I know that after war they were making parts for Praga trucks (transmissions?)

And if you look closely at the P-38 magazine, you will notice a similarity to the Smith and Wesson 39 mag. SO similar that one will fit into the other. The P-38 mags, however, lack the notch needed for the catch on the S&W 39. So, Beretta "borrowed" large chunks of the design and gave it a decent mag capacity inspired by the Browning HP whilst S&W "liberated" the P-38 double action and magazine and plugged them into a "compact" and lightened Browning. And then they introduced the Model 59 which incorporated the double stack / single feed mag concept from the Browning (More Saive / FN than Browning by 1935).

I am interested to know how they managed to write so much on just one manufacturer of the P38 lol
@FairlyUnknown
@FairlyUnknown 5 лет назад
You're underestimating the complexity that goes into these things and how deep history can get lol. During the video he also mentioned that there are chapters dedicated to things other than the specifics of the P38 like the rifle and the discussion on whether or not the tooling was broken to form a "V" instead of a "Y".

I live near Hrádek nad Nisou. You can check out the factory if you find this address in Google maps: Lidická 25, 463 34 Hrádek nad Nisou. (Most of) The buildings are still standing - although in a rough shape now. New company moved into the complex but they don't make guns. :)

okay given the CZ in my nick, it should be obvious that I like Czech guns. However having owned a spreewerk P-38 it was terrible, I wonder if he addresses ways that the slaves may have sabotaged things?

that’s not how you pronounce it however :) IPA pronunciation: [ˈʃpʁeːvɛʁk] so the ee in spree is pronounced similarly to the english d-ay.

Alfred Neumann not really, as it’s a long e, but i wouldn’t also necessarily take “day” as an example, as there’s not really an “y” at the end, but found it as an official english example for eː and so i just went with it ;)
