This captivating novel by Ann Braden is a great book to open the eyes of the American middle class to the way children are growing up all around us. At the same time, it can bring hope and a sense of self motivation to kids who are living this difficult life.
The accuracy that Ann Braden achieved in the portrayal of the reality that so many kids are living in the midst of a world of kids with parents who cater to their children’s every whim with travel sports and dream vacations is astounding. The Benefits of Being an Octopus is great reminder to be mindful as educators to why some kids don’t have their homework and motivation to help them find their ability to create for themselves the life that they want.
