@@jscottphillips503 Yes indeed! I have only read a couple early TOS books thus far (Mission to Horatius and Spock Must Die!) but will slowly keep making my way through the litverse and looking forward to seeing what you all decide to read for Book Trek 2024.

I well remember the plant holocaust in that story. Don’t mess with the Enterprise! I really liked those weird Gold Key Star Trek comics. I read them over and over. Great video!

There was something very disturbing about seeing those plant creatures writhing in flaming agony as their world was destroyed. Good thing Gold Key Comics didn't answer to the Comics Code Authority! Thanks, Mike!

This was a fantastic history lesson, with a Butthead cameo no less 😂 The illustrations are pretty solid, and aside from the wholesale extermination of planetary life it seems like a solid early Trek attempt. Great work!

Thanks, Vin! Yes, the cameo was an Easter egg for the discriminating few. Thanks for the share, and for the event itself!

What a great deep dive into the Star Trek comic books! Your description transported me to my local Sav-On Drug store where a wee Wanda Woman would spin the comic book racks while enjoying both the aroma of the cigar aisle and the sweet scent of sugar cones from the ice cream scoop station. Good luck on your continuing search for those erotic comic books. Great video!

Man, I miss our own Sav-On. The comics and magazine shelves were right across from the candy counter and ice cream station, and right around the turnstile from the TV tube testing machine. I wish it was now! Thanks, Wanda! And ... I'll keep looking.

I really appreciate you discussing this first comic. My compliments. I remember this comic leaving a pretty deep impression on me: plants that people eat, people that turn into plants and a climax that is completely out of tune. Good job!

Thanks! Yeah, that last scene was horrifying. And... what about all the spores that had already escaped into space for as long as the planet has been around? Oh well, best not to worry about such things!

Harlan Ellison told me once, in a letter, that most Trekkies have bat guano for brains. You don't think that's what Blish was referring to, do you?

Ha! Probably not, considering how new the show was at the time. But I can certainly imagine him saying that in later years. That guy was a pistol!

@@jscottphillips503 True. He wrote me that letter in 1988. There was a solid laugh in every paragraph.

What are these books that you speak of? Some sort of paper stacked on top of each other and glued together? I would have you speak more on this. You mean you read words, and then imagine in your mind instead of having it shown to you on a screen? Please contact me via screen and explain this black magic.

Sometimes the words even come with illustrated panels. We'll start you off with a nice Dick & Jane primer next time we get together. I think you'll like it!
