I just started a booktube and your points about it giving you confidence and helping you grow as person by doing something scary are so accurate! Girl, you really know what’s up.
you all prolly dont care at all but does someone know a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost my password. I love any assistance you can offer me.
@Waylon Josiah Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
oooo this video is SUPER helpful. I love that you shared your equipment infos - no joke, been super curious about your podcasting set up. I haven't made a video like this because, like you said, coming from a place of privilege, it's tough to be like hey okay, so spend a grand and get started lol. But at the end of the day being transparent about what you're using is super helpful, regardless because when your end product doesn't look or sound the same, you get curious at to what the other person is working with. TWENTY VIDEO IDEAS? woof. I really need to work on that. Twitter is insane and I'm the literal worst at it and tips for how to be better at that would be helpful but then it's like, um how do I get better at making friends... blerg.
i agree! and i think by being transparent people can understand all the options out there and can potentially save to upgrade slowly or choose not to. information is ALWAYS better than no information. i'm notoriously bad about OVER researching so i wanted to provide people with everything that i know, in hopes that it might save them some time in searching. HAH yeah my list is... um. too long. but if i ever have a random thought throughout the day like "that would make a cool video" i can just write it down and maybe run with it. also with twitter i just literally have no filter and eventually someone will enjoy what ur shitposting, but that's just me lol
my beautiful Queen! one of the very first people to support me and be my friend. I don’t even think of you as a booktube friend anymore. you’re a FRIEND! I use my iPhone 7 plus, natural lighting since I have a window that hits my bookshelves AND I edit my videos on the iMovie app. TO THE PEOPLE WHO ARE WANTING TO START BOOKTUBE BUT THINK YOURE NOT GOOD, PRETTY, SMART, FLASHY ENOUGH, STOP HOLDING YOURSELF BACK! Being a part of booktube has helped me with so much! I am more confident, more outgoing, I’ve made amazing friends and has helped me with having conversations with authors. I have no laptop, no camera and no lights. so if I can do it, so can you! please don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for advise or help. 💕
you're proof that it literally does not matter what you film with as long as u have an amazing personality and kick ass content. so so happy that we're friends
Totally agree with doing things that scare you, I was so scared to start a channel because I had no camera, just my webcam and a microphone and I was SO self conscious, but once I started, I realized that I loved it. And I completely agree that it gives me confidence, I edit videos and hear my voice everyday, which I used to be so self-conscious about. I am so happy I started the channel and glad that I gave myself a chance do do something that I really like! ✨ (Also we stan a cheese loving queen!)
Great video! As a newbie to booktube I can use all the help I can get! Just using my phone right now to film, but as my channel grows, I'm sure I will upgrade.
I just tried to film for a classic "booktube newbie tag" video and ended up with quality blooper material.. so, gonna try again tomorrow and *make that f@cking video* lol thanks for the encouragement!
HELLO!!! I've been wanting to watch this video for ages. I loved what you said about spontaneity. It's so true that keeping it fresh and more relaxed is good for the creative process of things. I have to film during the weekends only because I can't after school, but I usually edit in a couple of hours and have it ready for the next day. I can never just wait for a certain date to publish it, I just want to do it AS SOON as I finish it, haha. I also am such an equipment junkie, I just love incorporating cool tech items. I don't think they're all necessary either! But I just really like them. The thing is that I see I have the privilege of having the resources to get those things, so I'm not always comfortable expressing that I'm constantly saving and using that money to upgrade when a lot of people on booktube don't have the same opportunity. Before starting my channel, no matter how many times people had told me that filming on your phone worked and was enough, I knew I'd need to have a camera to feel like I was prepared. I made the conscious decision that I would only start when I felt secure that I had equipment to make the quality as good as it could be. I don't think you need an expensive microphone or a super complete kit, but a good camera and lighting are essential. I want to help people find other ways of using what they have if they can't get those things, though. It sucks real bad otherwise. Definitely the most shocking thing ever has been making friends with the people that were my celebrities, that still are, and realizing that like you said! They're equals, accepting, and welcoming. Your last line was so perfect. There are booktubers that are going to be my favorites and they haven't even created videos yet. I need to hang that up somewhere ;) AMAZING VIDEO, CHAN CHAN.
ahhhh thanks Sophie!!! we seem to have a very similar approach to the equipment part, but i totally agree that people should try and work with what they've got and yes, how crazy is it that we get to talk to people we look up to... it's so wild
YOU ARE SO WELL SPOKEN AND SMART. I also film and edit my videos as I do them and don't have a day where I just film all my videos. I feel like it would help, in a way, but it feels weird when I don't have the video fresh in my head when I go to answer my comments. It's interesting how well the ring light works! I feel like so many people use ring lights but it makes their background so dark, but after this I think I've finally decided to splurge and buy a ring light, because it's winter and the sun goes away SO quickly. And I hate not filming on some days just because I missed the daylight
Ahh thank Brittany ❤️❤️ you should totally go for a ring light i really underestimated how useful it is, especially since filming this vid! It’s nice being able to film whenever especially during the wintwr
I also write down ideas on my phone in the notes. I have a RU-vid note just for everything so it’s handy to have it accessible. I too don’t script. I have to do it on the fly due to my health too. So I try to have 3 ideas ready to record. Twitter is brilliant, I didn’t know it would be important when I started but I love it. Agree with doing stuff that scares you, self growth is one of the things I’ve really enjoyed!
i didn't know if anyone else actually felt the same way, but i totally gained confidence, too! i have never liked my voice, laugh, or how i look, but watching myself while editing, i actually don't hate my voice/laugh anymore, and i'm slowly gaining confidence in my looks again because i'm taking more time for myself (i.e., self care, taking care of my skin, wearing make up). and that's not to say that i only do skin care and make up because others will see, but that is ultimately why it started to become more of a habit for me, because of the fact that i wanted to look my best when filming a majority of my videos. now it's a habit that i realize i truly enjoy, and even if i stopped booktube today, i would still do. i loved this video!
so, i literally never get everything in one comment. BUT. the thing about getting to talk to creators you look up to is super true. and you want cheese, girl, i got cheese. i thought you were the most witty, hilarious person, and i remember when you followed me on twitter, i just about lost my damn mind. it didn't really even register that i could talk to you in a friend way, and so that happening below my mind, just a smidge. ya know, playing it cool 'n all.
ugh love you, and i'm glad to know that i'm not the only cheeseball that's gained confidence from booktube!! and also glad i'm not the only dork who freaked out when I got to talk to people I admire. also ur second comment made me smile like a fool so, thank you
👏🏻👏🏻💯 the part where you explain how you learn not to bemoan others growth and turn inwards is so accurate to me, I learned to just accept what is and learn to value others growth without reflecting what I’m doing & that helps in life in general!! It’s not just exclusive to RU-vid! Killing it 👌🏻
EXACTLY! i didn't realize how much it applied to life in general. but I think booktube is a really good way to learn life lessons in a low stakes/low risk way. pretty cool stuff
Great video! The hardest part is starting your channel. I wanted to create mine since 2013 and now that I finally did it I am super happy 😄 Thanks for linking everything in the description
You have honestly just changed my life. I’ve just been playing with the iso on my camera and it’s so bloody amazing the difference it makes! Thank you soooo much!
This makes me feel a lot better. I put a video up and got some good feedback, but I haven’t posted since because I filmed something twice and hated it both times. I also almost teared up when you mentioned this was something you could control because I’ve been off work due to injury for over a year and just found out I’m going to be considered permanently partially disabled and can’t do certain careers I wanted to pursue anymore. Thank you for making this video and giving me some reassurance. ❤️
ugh i'm sorry jenna, i can't imagine how hard that is. i hope you can find another career that can fulfill you. but yeah, honestly booktube has brought (almost) nothing but positive things into my life and i hope it does for you too. the beginning is really tough especially filming and refilming and trying to figure out what kind of content you like making best... but once you get the hang of it you really do feel in control and it truly is freeing
Thank you so much Chandler. You are such a sweet soul, and I wish we lived closer because I would totally meet you for coffee (or chick-fil-A 😉) or something. ❤️
You're so pretty. Appreciated watching this even though I'm okay with my set up but just interesting to see what other people do. I definitely agree on the twitter thing, I already had 2.5k followers on twitter before booktube but it defo does help find more people and allow people to get a gist of you as well as interact with the content creators they like more. I defo feel more comfortable with myself physically after posting, as well as having faith in my own opinions which is great and completely agree as to why that's a good reason to start. I haven't even hit 1k and I never really thought much of numbers to determine worth but I defo felt like these big creators I adore would never notice me but they do. They judge people as people and I'm not going to pretend there aren't creators like that, I know there are, but those people who genuinely care about books and the community and meeting those who they genuinely just enjoy don't care about social numerical validation. Great vid as always love x
ugh love u zaf. and yeah, i dunno why it surprised me so much that bigger creators here are so kind. it definitely sets booktube apart from a lot of other communities online
This video is really fun to watch 😂 Nice to know another fellow booktuber from other country. Oh, by the way 3:15 aku tak sanggup lihat komik berjatuhan, sayang sangat 🙈
This was super informative! I started my channel as a supplement to my blog, but I'm looking at upgrading my equipment in the near future and investing more in my channel. I love the advice of having a few video ideas going at once-- I hate when I plan out one video and try to film it and just nothing goes according to plan. Twitter is SERIOUSLY important in making and maintaining friendships! also ugh sorry to be cheesy but you're so smart and genuine and I'm really glad we're friends!!
This video is so helpful, and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for posting it and being so transparent about everything. I've been wanting so badly to make a booktube channel literally since the end of 2017 but I deal with a ton of self-image issues and was worried that people would hate my face, or find my voice annoying, or whatever else - so I just... haven't even tried? And this video has inspired me so much, and I think I just might try filming a video soon. :)
This was such a great video! I'm just getting started, and this was super helpful. Particularly agree with what you said about how great it is having something you have control over!
This is awesome advice! Lighting really is key. Another cheap lighting upgrade is to buy one of those utility lights (the one with the silver bowl thing) and buy diffusion sheets on amazon which you can clip on with clothespins. I learned that in one of my film classes and it totals to about $20-30.
I love your shit posts, can confirm I agree with you that visuals are a necessary part of booktube because of the medium but sound is personally more important to me. I listen a lot to booktube on my commute when I can’t always be watching videos so certain things I have to save for later. I also don’t script but I’ve never thought of keeping notes on my phone. def stealing that, thanks Chan omg yes getting to talk to btbrs I was inspired by is a huge thing. this community means so much to me 💕💕
i hadn't thought about it like that, but you're definitely right. i listen to a lot of vids while I drive and I do appreciate solid audio. and yes, steal away
Thank you for making this video! I’ve filmed a couple of videos but haven’t edit or posted it yet because I’ve been a bit insecure since I’ve gained wait. This has really given me a push. ❤️
I’m spiraling down booktube tip videos and I don’t know how I never saw this one before (probably because I’ve been absent so long oops) but this is making me so excited to start again and I’m just brainstorming right now and I’m so excited again! This is a great video Chandler, love it! ♥️
This is exactly the video I needed I feel like a lot of the time I’m second-guessing myself and comparing myself to other booktubers but you’re right we are on even playing field’s and I think we should use that as inspiration to keep pushing through
i go back and forth all the time with comparing myself. but i really do think that if we put our blinders on and just focus on ourselves and our content we're going to see good things happen.
loved this video, it's so well done! for me it depends on the video; normally I plan what to say on my wrap ups but not so much on hauls, for instance =) it is pretty scary, but you're absolutely right. starting your channel is a huge step and you truly grow as a person/creator! completely worth it ^^
You are a WEALTH of knowledge! I found this so helpful and I’ve been doing booktube for over a year 😅 I’m the same with posting- I hate pre-filming and can’t stick to a schedule to safe my life! I do shit on the fly too- keeps me sane I guess... omg yes Twitter is SO important and say more so than instagram!
Ok so this is H E L L A inspiring... ice been thinking about starting a booktube recently and after seeing this I’m legit going to go for it. Thank you for sharing! All I need now is to figure out how to edit shit 😂
I know you posted this a while ago, I just wanted to say that is video so fucking amazing. Like you are one of the realest people I have ever seen and as someone who just started a channel and is honestly kind of stressed and scared, this made everything a lot better! Lol that’s it have a good day!
Because I'm a such a typical Ravenclaw, I came across this video as I was doing research into if I should booktube or not. I love all the cheese, and I feel like you really inspired me. And here I am a month later, putting out content. So thank you. :)
I just recently started my channel, and this helped hella. I do eventually want to get a camera, but as of now I am using my Iphone X and it works great. I always feel like I come off super cringy, so this definitely helped me with a confidence boost.
the iphone X camera quality is fucking bomb (i have one too, twins!!) so tbh u don't need to upgrade any time soon if u don't want to. and ur not cringe, keep putting out bomb content
I have started and deleted my booktube over the years because I always felt like I didn't have the best lightning, I was boring, my videos suck, the list goes on but I have been thinking super heard on coming back to booktube or having my channel as booktube/lifestyle once my semester of college is over. I am actually going to come back and this video sort of made that final for me so thank you ❤
Haha. “Like” and “Um”. My first two videos are full of these. I’m trying my best to catch myself. I’m glad I’m not alone. Haha. I felt so bad when I first watched my own video. 😃
this is the good advice i needed! i started my channel back in september and i still need some advice on a daily basis hahah oh and i do get the confidence thing! before editing my first video i was so scared about watching 10 minutes of me doing the booktube newbie tag and sounding awkward, ugly and shsy but now i do not are at all! i just go edit the video and it's done!
yessss come thru confidence!!! and i'm glad this helped in some way! i still feel so new so whenever i see a video about insider tips or booktube confidence i always watch and usually learn something
AHHH i just ordered a tripod for my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra which is the only real equipment i want to start which means ill be filming my first video soon 😳
Not to be cheesy, but this is really motivating me to make a channel. Thank you so much! I’m a recent subscriber but I’ve been binge watching you for the last couple of days. Have a fun time at book con :)
I've been thinking about booktube a lot since I became a content creator. Joining the book community has been really rewarding, even though it has its challenges (but I guess anything worth our time does). The thing is, and I think I've told you before, even if I figured out the whole equipment thing and had the guts to go in front of a camera, I still feel trapped in the same language dilemma. If I dared to film in english, since I interact mostly with the international book community already, would people even watch my videos as I'm not a native english speaker? Like I can't think of a single international booktuber that is not from an English-speaking country. :( (also editing seems like it sucks) But great video Chandler, helpful information in a practical way.
editing is... not fun haha which is why i didn't really talk about it. but i actually ended up filming, editing, and posting this video in one day and i still had spare time to read after my 9-5 job. so it's not thaaaat bad. but i would absolutely love to see you post. i don't think you'd be alienating your international book friends, i think it would be a cool additional format to consume your reviews in. and you could do them in whatever language you wish. i think there's a big need for more non-english speaking booktubers tho. thanks camile
I loved this! I always appreciate advice videos, because I am genuinely the WORST at the internet. I am so bad at networking and making friends online (even though I have a twitter), and it does sometimes feel like it's oversaturated so what's the point in me making videos. This video was definitely helpful to say the least, and made me feel like I can eventually find a place in the community. 💛I am here for the cheese.
This is such a useful video. I'm really struggling with lighting now we are in winter. I can't use a ring light as I wear glasses and don't have room for soft boxes... erugh the struggles
This is such great advice! I loved this 😬 do you have a camera mount for in your car? I used to film in my car a lot when but with my new camera I am nervous to mount it - I want to find a reliable mount cus I do NOT want it falling while I’m driving lol.
haha i actually don't film when i'm driving, i just set my camera on my dash when i'm in park. i don't think i'd be able to mount it with the mic which sucks.
THIS IS SO FUCKING HELPFUL YES CHAN. I’m also an impulse filmer, I do the same thing. I don’t script, I just know what I want to address and go for it😂 also yessss Twitter is so important😅
i just keep a running list of ideas (wow i didn't realize i actually said that in this video i sound like a repetitive nut job)! and if something on my list is jumping out i just go for it. been in a lil bit of a rut lately but i like to make my stuff a lil different
@@chandlerainsley I have started keeping notes on my phone for video ideas and hopefully I'll have some original ideas beyond tbrs and wrap-ups :) You're very entertaining and don't at all sound like a nut job. You've also made me re-think my filming with auto settings, thanks for the tips!
i didn't mention it, but i use final cut x... totally unnecessary though imo unless you like really fancy graphics or need video in video. i used imovie for my first few videos and it operates functionally almost identically
chandler ainsley okay! That’s what I use now and I’ve been wondering about the difference between the two! I’ve been thinking of getting a camera for filming eventually because for some reason my iPhone not longer wants to upload videos to my Mac and it’s quite frustrating because I have to find new ways to transfer them lol
