Bookbinding 101 Determining the Paper Grain

Before making a video tutorial on basic case making, I thought I should make a quick instruction on how to determine the direction of paper grain, in case your paper stock doesn't indicate whether it's "short grain" or "long grain". It's important to know which way the grain is running on paper and boards when binding a book. Making the paper grain parallel to the spine of the book would help to prolong the life of the book and lets the turning of the pages easier, as well as makes the binding process less troublesome. Thanks for your interest. ~ M.H.R

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching all of your videos on bookbinding. You have a real talent for showing the steps clearly, and the written words make everything straightforward. Thank you so much for sharing these online for us to see.

I appreciate your videos. They are very helpful and easy to follow. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with those of us who don't have the option to be taught by a book binder in person.

Thank YOU!! I have been making books out of watercolor paper (to paint, draw, collage on) and never even considered the grain of the paper. Learned something new today. Much appreciation.

For binding, we mainly use a glue called PVA, (Polyvinyl acetate) which I'm sure is commercially available at any art supply store. It's non acidic, flexible, and has a great integrity. Most bookbinders use this glue now a days. For your information, PVA should be used only for binding books, NEVER for tasks like paper mending. Torn paper can be mended by using a substance called methylcellulose, or wheatpast. If pages of your book get torn, you mustn't use PVA. :-)

Thank you very much for taking the time to make your videos. I sincerely appreciate it, and love watching them. I was wondering, at 0:16, why the paper grain is important due to moisture. How/What does the direction of the paper or the direction of all components affect or affected by moisture?

I just discovered this channel and I love it. Your work is amazing, I really hope your videos help record the traditional book binding ways. I am looking forward to see the case making video. btw: what kind of glue are you using? I know there is a special one for book binding but I have no idea what kind of substance is used and if I can find substitutes somewhere else, since it is hard to find such a specialised glue in my neighbourhood

Normal printer paper is too thin for my liking. If the paper is too thin, the end product has tendency to have a lax or loose feel to it when being held. 80lb text is an adequate weight for binding, in my opinion. It's not too think, not too thick. Good luck.

I have been enjoying the book binding stuff that SeaLemonDIY is doing and I came across your work. It is awesome! I particularly love the olden look of the style you do. On the paper though, I am seeing why the grain is important, but is there a preferred type of paper? Would simple paper you use in your printer work fine or is there something else?

Grain in paper? How can a composite material have a grain? I know there is grain in natural wood and in cold rolled steel bars but paper and hard boards are pressed composites like particle board aren't they? (What don't I know?)

Grain in a composite material is due to the type of construction instead of the material itself. If you think about paper, the process by which it's made involves lining up fibers, then pressing them. The way it's made industrially makes most of the fibers oriented in a direction instead of the others (I think due to the paper being pressed with a moving roll instead of a planar press)
