Having studied books 9 and 10 of Paradise Lost for A-Level it took me a solid year to actually get into it but when it all clicked it was one of the most satisfying poems to go through. Genuinely love the psuedo-psychoanalysis Milton does for Adam in book 10. Also if you like Mansfield Park, I wholeheartedly recomend Vanity Fair by William Thackeray

The Captain I will definitely get around to Paradise Lost at some point because I can imagine it being an incredible experience to analyse! I’ve always wanted to read Vanity Fair I’ve just never got around to it! Going to have to put it on my wish list 😂

What would be a good book to compare to To the Lighthouse?

I’ve just finished my final year of English Lit and I honestly think I read less than 50% of the books I was set. I’d start them all, but I usually always ran out of time to finish them 🙊 and I don’t know how because I didn’t read anything else for three years! I’m not sure I’ve read any of the books that you had to, though, bar one or two!

The Indecisive Readers That’s literally the same as me! I’m in second year now and still struggling to finish any of the reading 😂

Thank you for this! Completely random question (sorry) - on average, how many lectures/seminars did you have a week in 1st year?
@RebeccaBooks
@RebeccaBooks 4 года назад
Courtney I think I had around 15 hours all together in first year because I also did a German open unit because at Bristol in first year English you have to choose an open unit! 😊

Were most of these books from the mandatory units or from the optional units? I’m studying English at Bristol this Sept so this video has made me so excited to read more x
@RebeccaBooks
@RebeccaBooks 4 года назад
Amy Maxwell Yes all of them were! In first year the books are mandatory and you only start to choose your own modules in second year! Some of the books will be different for you as they may have changed some by now/ some teachers choose a few that are different but for the most part you will most likely be reading most of what I mentioned! I’m so glad you’re excited to come to Bristol!🥳

Virginia Woolf is certainly feminist, one of the best known British feminist writers ever! Certainly the best of the Bloomsbury group of writers. I strongly recommend you read 'A Room Of One's Own' by her, especially if you ever feel like writing a book!
@RebeccaBooks
@RebeccaBooks 3 года назад
She’s fantastic! I am pretty sure I am going to do my dissertation on her, and I will certainly be reading A Room of One’s Own! I also recently read Mrs Dalloway and of course also loved that. I am a writer so sounds like it’ll suit me !
@levitybooks3952
@levitybooks3952 3 года назад
@@RebeccaBooks Yeah, that and Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet are the best books I've found on writing so far! Mrs Dalloway is great, the lack of chapters made it uniquely challenging to read, every time I'd go back to my bookmark I'd have to read a few pages before it to remember where I was!
@RebeccaBooks

@@levitybooks3952 Yeah the lack of chapters made the reading experience very different !! I love Letters to a Young Poet, it’s amazing but definitely time I reread it 😊
