I also loved Miss Benson's Beetle & Moonflower Murders (aren't the covers wonderful too?). I wasn't sure whether to read the Thursday Murder Club - it's received a lot of hype, probably because of its author! That put me off. I also read Elena Ferrante's four Neapolitan Novels in September. I was inspired after compulsively watching the first two books which were serialised on tv. Have you read the quartet?

It sounds like you had a lovely month of reading too! I haven't read all of the Ferrante quartet yet, but the ones I've read so far I've really enjoyed. I thought they did a great job with the TV series too! xxx

Unfortunately I hadn’t remembered your feelings about The Thursday Murder Club so read it quite recently for a book group. I was so disappointed in the plot as well as the ending, you explain why I felt the way I did. I think that even if viewed as a pastiche it should have a satisfactory denouement! I need to make notes on your videos :).

I'm glad it's not just me! I was so disappointed too, and I haven't read the second one xxx

Jane Eyre and September are 2 of my favorites as well. I must get Dear Reader as I too, love books about books. The Friend sounds fantastic as well. I have read The Vanishing Half and really enjoyed it so I am intrigued with Passing. Miss Benson's Beetle sounds right up my alley so I will be picking that up as well. Thank you Miranda!

Hi Miranda, after R C Sherriff's The Fortnight in September you have whetted my appetite to read some more and am intrigued by the science fiction story. I really enjoyed hearing about your September reads. This month I am thoroughly enjoying Michel Faber's 'D' which, although it is a children's adventure story, is a thoroughly uplifting, fun tribute to Dickens and I would definitely recommend it, Teresa 📚🍂🧡

Miranda, your videos are so cozy to watch, I always feel like I’m being introduced to a new author when I watch your videos...I never read anything from Anthony Horowitz, but now I will....and “MISS BENSON’S BEETLE” sounds so funny 😂, got to get that book...I read a Rachel Joyce book about three years ago “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” and I really loved it.. Thank You, for another GREAT video 🥰

Thank you so much, Kiki! So glad you enjoyed watching this 😊 Miss Benson's Beetle is really funny and sweet (although the ending is rather sad!!). It's definitely a good cosy read for these autumnal evenings. I'd like to read Rachel Joyce's other book too. xxx

I’ve read, and thoroughly enjoyed, The Thursday Murder Club. Oddly enough, your complaint about it is exactly how I feel about Agatha Christie. I’ve only read two of her books (many years ago) and gave up on her because I felt like she “cheated the endings,” but I didn’t think that about any of this series. I have been thinking lately to give Christie another try. I do love hearing your reviews, and always add to my wish list after watching. 😊

The settings for all your recent videos are so lovely. You're making The Hopkins Manuscript sound compelling since I'm not a big sci-fi fan. It reminds me of my experience reading Nevil Shute's "On The Beach" with my book club in January. It is also about an intense subject matter, but Shute captures the human experience so poignantly. It was worth the read. I just finished September and would happily move to Strathcroy! Dear Reader sounds so good! Enjoyed hearing about all your books!

Thank you so much, Elizabeth! You're making me want to read On The Beach - sounds so interesting! I also would happily move to Strathcroy (although I am getting very fond of Yorkshire!!). Hope you're having a good week xxx

This video was like an oasis to me. Was in a reading slump for 2 months 😬because of a heavy workload, and then found you talking about very interesting books. Now I'm in the mid of 'The Girl In The train' (would prefer to reach one of mentioned in this video, but I live so far away from the UK) 😊❤

Great video as always, Miranda! I completely agree with you on Moonflower Murders, I was hoping to really drag it out and make it last given its size but ended up inhaling it over the weekend - such rookie mistake but it was impossible to put down. Utter bliss! And yes, I know what you mean about Osman's book, it seemed as if he could not make up his mind about the ending and presented us with almost three far fetched possibilities which was disappointing. But I loved the premise and characters so much, I'm willing to believe it's down to his inexperience as a debut writer and hope that the next one will be better. My book of the month was Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson - extraordinary. And Dinner with Edward by Isabel Vincent for a bit of fun. I love books taking place in New York!
@MirandaMills
@MirandaMills 4 года назад
Oh I love Red at the Bone and Dinner with Edward too. Both brilliant reads! You're right, maybe it's just his inexperience that made that ending a bit on the ridiculous side. Hopefully the next book will have a more satisfactory solution! Glad you enjoyed Moonlight Murders so much too xxx

This was, as always, wonderful Miranda. As I enjoyed The Fortnight in September so much, I would like to read R C Sherriff‘s other books as well very soon. But I am tempted to read all your recommendations. Btw. today I ordered Affinity by Sarah Waters. I thought of skipping the October bookclub read of yours because I‘m so busy at the moment but I just couldn’t resist . Xxx

Fabulous video and recommendations, Miranda! You have convinced me to try The Hopkins Manuscript and I am also interested in reading many of your other September titles, too. Apropos of Dear Reader, I've just learned today that Cathy Rentzenbrink will be in conversation tomorrow with Lennie Goodings at the Cheltenham Literature Festival at 12 noon BST. And for the first time b/c of Covid, the festival is free to watch live, online! I loved your Tea & Tattle podcast with Lennie Goodings and learning more about her distinguished history w/Virago so am really looking forward to their convo tomorrow. xx

You convinced me into reading the Hopkins Manuscript. Like you, I am not much of a sci-fi reader. I read this month A Fortnight in September, it was my first Persephone read and I will be getting more from their list. Such a good writer, especially capturing the loneliness of certain characters. I read Passing and the ending took me by surprise, I had to read the paragraph twice to make sure I got it :) Reading at the moment Rebecca before the new adaptation, Possession by A.S Byatt and Like a Mule Bringing Ice Cream to the Sun by Sarah Lapodo Manyika. I will be adding several of your reads as after every one of your videos and listening to Jane Eyre narrated by Newton. .

I also read Passing this September! Loved it, Nella Larsen’s writing was brilliant, interesting to see where many current modern authors got inspiration from this classic for themes and subject matters etc. I still can’t get over the ENDING 😳 I find myself still thinking about it!

I didn’t do well with my September reads. How well I am reading is always a great barometer on how I am doing mentally and physically. As winter approaches I feel it’s important to surround myself with good books and your videos are a lovely help. For October I am hoping to read: Emma by Jane Austen. Jane and Prudence by Barbara Pym In the garden with Jane Austen by Kim Wilson The Lifted Veil by George Eliot Wicked Autumn by GM Malliet.

Is it important to read magpie murder before moonflower murder or can moonflower murder be read independantly?
