I'm currently reading through the "Rocket Propulsion" textbook, its meant for undergraduates so my tiny little mind can still comprehend some of it. And it really helps if you want a general overview of rocketry.

I saw Structures in one of the National Rocketry Conference vids you posted and I'm so glad I did! I'm halfway through. As someone with very little background in mechanical engineering, the book has been an incredibly helpful introduction. I'm excited to read some of these other recs to learn more. I took your recommendation to read Rocket Propulsion Elements from you NAR presentation and I have to say its been extremely informative. Although I admittedly skip over most of the math, its great fun to flip between the different types of engines and learn exactly how they work. I actually just started designing a liquid rocket engine though so ive been going back to some of the math.

If anyone is interested in the more technical how to of rocket design (especially liquid rockets) I’d recommend “The Design of Liquid Propellant Rocket Engines” by Huzel and Huang. Also known as NASA SP 125. This correlates real well with Sutton’s Rocket Propulsion Elements because Sutton gives a comprehensive overview of propulsion whereas Huzel and Huang give a how to build a rocket engine.

I study engineering so I got interested on the channel he recommends about control systems, and when I go to check it out I realize I’ve already watched 6 of it’s videos. I 100% recommend it, helped me lots with Bode diagrams.

Just want to say thank you for your enthusiasm, effort and sharing what you do. Its very inspiring stuff. I don't have a background in engineering but enjoy similar topics from a hobby/curiosity perspective and I found I could relate to your story. Thank you :)

Thanks for sharing your reading library... In reference to Sagan, “Billions” is not even close to his best work. I have read (I believe) all of his books... some of which are no longer published. Carl Sagan changed the course of my life. IMO, he is the most influential scientist that has ever lived! Yes, Einstein and Newton are the ones who changed the course of physics, but Sagan was the first Scientist to even attempt to explain it to the masses. I realize your focus is on rockets, but! If you are intersted in Sagan, plz read more! He was not only a brilliant science orator, but he was deeply influential in voyager and viking missions as well. Much of his earlier writings were about the origins of humans , evolution and how we became a collection of molecules capable of contemplating our place in the cosmos. A concept that bothers many people, but humbles me.

Thanks for sharing these books, and thank you for sharing your process of experimenting with model rockets. I really love watching your progress, and how you try to learn from everything. I’m hoping to start prototyping my own project soon, and your work really inspires me to keep working towards that goal. On a different note, I have a question for you about the coding involved in your control systems. Given that you have so many sensor inputs, do you ever incorporate fuzzy logic in your code?

Longitude. That was a good one. Some of the descriptions of sailing accidents are haunting.

Sobell lived on my street growing up. She and her family are such great people.

My dad recommended both longitude and why things don’t fall down to me. I have longitude sitting next to my bed and have read the Martian four or five times. This is a great list of books!

Longitude is a great book! I bought the Audible version and listened to it on a long trip. The Elegant Universe is outstanding. I read it when it came out. Big fan of Brian Greene. Billions and Billions by Sagan, outstanding (so was Cosmos). Control Theory is, unfortunately, very expensive. Great recommendations!

You should read simon singh’s longitude. Im sure its very similar but i can honestly say it’s such a beautiful tale. You might like to read it again but with a slightly different slant!

Joe, I recommend you read "Rockets and people" by Boris Chertok. This is hystory of soviet space technology. Interesting thing that book describes multiple mistakes and funny reasons why first rockets failed. Good humor and a lot of technical detail in book. I know nasa website has all 4 chapter free to read.

The "Structures" book is really good. Highly recommend.

Please don't forget to mention the author names for each of them. Also a list in the description with author names would be very helpful!

One more thing, I don't think you mentioned electronics, but there's stuff to be learned. MAKE: Electronics is good, but doesn't go very far (okay, there's a lot to electronics, and that's not a real thick book). The Bible is "The Art of Electronics" - the 3rd Edition came out about 5 years ago, and the 2nd Edition was legendary for the previous 25 years (!). If other books only whet your appetite, I strongly recommend TAOE 3rd edition. The authors have a wonderful informal easy-reading writing style that I wish EVERY book had! The Power Supply chapter is available for download from the book's site, artofelectronics.net/ and the "X Chapters" volume came out only a year ago - I haven't read it yet but can endorse it from the several sample articles from it at x.artofelectronics.net/

There are some companies like Agnikul (its an Indian private aerospace industry, in case you don't know) which launches 3d printed rockets (which can easily be configured and are highly efficient as Indians don't always waste money in inefficient rockets) to space. Some years later, maybe you will do something similar. You are awesome.

Love these recommendations but 115 for the book hurts my funds and this ain’t sumin they got at the library so getting hand me downs is the best way to go about it

Of course we all want to support book authors and such, but if you can't afford it, the author of that DSP book has all the chapter available in PDF online for free at dspguide.com/ What a great guy! I learned DSP the hard way, through the Oppenheim-Shaffer book "Digital Signal Processing " Later editions are titled "Discrete-Time Signal Processing" as there's a distinction between discrete-time and discrate-amplitude (though most systems use both). You might ask yourself "What's a multiply-accumulate instruction and why do all DSP chips and many mainstream processors have it?" When you see the code for digital filters and such it becomes obvious how the instruction is used. But that's just to speed up things, you don't actually need a "digital signal processor" to do digital signal processing. There's this (nearly lost in history) ANALOG machine that does signal processing! Watch all four videos and get the book: www.engineerguy.com/fourier/

For electronic circuits, I'd recommend "Electronic Principals" by Albert Malvino. Was recommended to me by a guy at work who use to work in the electronics industry, and not even past the first chapter and i'm already finding it perfect for someone like me who is new to circuitry. Think of control theory as feedback theory, because feedback is (usually? always?) an essential part of a control system and how it works. I have a good knowledge of algebra and complex numbers from my EE background, but that's STILL not quite enough to understand control theory.
