@@freeble_ check out “the weird and the eerie” by mark fisher. he actually defines the difference between the 2 words which i feel like gives a lot of depth to the horror genre.
I had to watch this video solely because I saw This Thing Between Us in your thumbnail! This book is seriously a top favorite of mine too, and I constantly am telling people about it too. The grief aspect hit me so hard. It was perfect!
I watched the movie ‘I’m thinking of ending things’ and loved it so much. Then I read the book, which was beautiful in the way books are. But the movie did such a good job and getting the atmosphere and tone of the book perfectly right and in some ways out does the book in certain visual twists and subtleties that are too explicit and overt in the book
@@Crystal-nw3mv I guess it wasn’t for you, but I absolutely loved it. beautiful strange acting and atmosphere and sound design. The way they visualised stream of consciousness, inner monologues, dreams, was very entrancing. I think critics loved it but yea it’s not popular among general audiences.. too bad It’s also an adaptation, it’s not suppsed to be a replica. It’s an interpretation of the ending, it’s more fitting I think, I wouldn’t have liked a Fight Club type reveal at the end at all
@@Crystal-nw3mv it was surreal to me. And the janitor subplot was linked in a way that didn’t explain everything but it all made sense and fell into place. Especially on a rewatch, I couldn’t wait for the musical climax. That’s how film achieves the transcendental feeling of great books imo. Musicality and motion
this is my first ever video of yours and i loved your passion when talking about the books...youve convinced me to go get this thing between us...i will update you once im done! ;P
Not only are you recommendations so good, your descriptions are well thought out without spoiling the story and your voice is pure ASMR. 10/10 Subscribed.
I just added a bunch of these to my library holds! I read Ghost Wall a few months ago and didn't really enjoy it (I think I just wasn't in the right headspace for that kind of slow building dread) but hearing you talk about it honestly made me want to give it another go.
I do think you should broaden your reading list, because you seem you do like more different literary approach and have completely different interests than vlogger. I always recommend person should stick to books and subjects that he/she generally loves, it is what matters, however weird it may seem or difficult at the times. Or, you may find a great recommendation elsewhere for something new and probably interesting at the moment.
FULL AGREE on I’m Thinking of Ending Things and This Thing Between Us. Your descriptions are so vivid and convincing!! I can’t waitttt to get to The Need and Natural Beauty
I’m also obsessed with This Thing Between Us and no one is talking about it! I wish the summary left out the possessed Alexa bc that’s such a small part of the plot. 🙈
I don’t recognize any of these books but between the intro, how you articulate yourself, and the comfy vibe that feels like FaceTiming a friend, I feel like all these books r gonna be fantastic. I wish you showed up on my recommended sooner!
we definitely have the same taste. i had to add like nearly all of these to my "to read" list. also, i definitely relate to the way you teared up talking about your favorite book. the passion with which you spoke about "this thing between us" sold it to me tbh.
I feel you on the thumbnail thing. I hate selfies, the idea of posing for a thumbnail photo it freaks me out. So I just never take selfies. River Phoenix in one interview talks about how he hates being captured so much on camera, and how he started having superstitions after he learned about how Native Americans believe that cameras take away people's souls in small pieces with each photograph. Video seems a bit different even though it's technically thousands of stills, it's this still aspect of photographs that seem uncanny to me. Great channel 👍
I want to read all of these now! You're really good at describing books without spoiling them. I feel like a book that could fit on this list (based on my impressions from your descriptions) is The Grip of It by Jac Jemc. It's a quick read, but it's also a pretty crazy ride dealing with houses and relationships.
Please give 'It lasts forever and then it's over' a go. It is also about grief, but queer grief, and it utilises the mechanic of a dystopian almost fever dream to unpack it. It was absolutely incredible, and really haunts me to this day, but in the best way!
Just finished This Thing Between Us (finished in 2 days, also could not put it down) fully because of you/this video! And goddamn, it was so wildly good. Would absolutely LOVE a video of you info-dumping all your thoughts about it
I haven't read any work by Melchor, but you got me thinking about sentences length, because Spanish is a "longer" language than English, we normally need more words to say the same thing, so now I'm truly curious, I going to have to pick one up.
This Thing Between Us has been buried on my TBR for months, I had forgotten why I even put it on there to begin with. Your review just bumped it to the top of the list!
Your enthusiasm was very persuasive, went and bought 'This thing between us' on kindle before you could even finish talking about it. Going to start it now, can't wait! I just finished Earthlings and was craving some new modern horror, thank you for the recs :)
I loved loved loved I’m Thinking of Ending Things. I personally don’t read paranormal neutral I love creepy unsettling books. This is my first video of yours and loved your reviews!
I watched the I’m Thinking of Ending Things movie before reading the book. Whole time I was very confused and I didn’t know what was happening but I sort of enjoyed it? Fast forward a few years later and I find a used copy on my local bookstore so I decided to pick it up since a friend of mine told me the book was not as confusing. Now, at this time I had forgotten a lot of things about the movie but I was still debating whether to read it or not since I hate watching movies first and I did it just because I saw it on Netflix and I didn’t know it was an adaptation. The book was a million times better, even having a vague idea of what was going to happen I was still SO tense throughout it, and frankly scared at points. I mean, I agree with you, it’s not an easy book to translate into a movie and that made me appreciate the movie more since it’s sort of a stream of consciousness book so they did what they could, but how I wish I would’ve read the book first because I think I would’ve loved it a lot more
they definitely did the best they could’ve done with the movie! the source material just seems so ill suited to film it is honestly kind of impressive they managed to do anything with it
saw that you posted yesterday evening and refrained from watching it immediately so i would have it as my breakfast watch, so thats exactly what i did just now, love your videos!
Got me from the beginning.✨I will read ANYTHING Iain Reid writes and it’s always atmospheric and unsettling. I love it! This Thing Between Us is sitting on my shelf but definitely need to get to it!
So appreciated this video and how well you articulated the vibes of each book - I really felt like I could tell if I would or wouldn't like the book based on what you had to say 😊
Just finished reading Paradais. I have the feeling it will stick with me for a while. It was completely obscene, disgusting and uncomfortable but it was a needed peice of writing. The writing was great, so great infact I felt disgusted with myself at what I had just read. Great recomendation
I just got this video recommended. you're very funny...it feels like my little sibling telling me about their interests lol you give this energy to me. Also you sold these books to me! I'll watch your other videos
Have you read Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach trilogy? There are parts of that series that creeped me way out; like certain textures and smells that I normally think of as pleasant in the real world are now associated with my (multiple) reading(s) of this series.
Omg I read I’m thinking of ending things BECAUSE I read the book. I had to see how it could’ve been written! Enjoyed them equally, the book maybe a smidge more.
Desperately want to read this thing between us but unfortunately it hasn't been translated and published on Brazil yet and the American copies are super expansive
this thing between us mention 🗣️ god i love that book so much, would also highly recommend people listen to the audiobook bc it elevates the reading experience SO much
omg I read this thing between us last November too and I remember doing a deep dive into Reddit and what others thought about. I’m sad to say that I feel like I forgot most of the details now except that fucking wall, but you saying that quote… yuhhh
I absolutely adored I'm thinking of ending things. I watched the movie as soon as it released on Netflix and while it does a huge disservice to the book as a whole, it definitely introduced a lot of people to how insane the book was.
I have to say that nothing freaked me out in the world than reading The Vegetarian by Han Kang, that I would love to see turned into a movie, but a Korean production nonetheless, speaking of movies not being the same as the book, I'm currently in the middle of finishing Yoder's Nightbitch and the trailer dropped, amd ofc it's got dumbed down from the text, but I'm still holding hope
I put The Thing Between Us on my wishlist -- this is absolutely my kind of book. I also loved The Need and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. It's not totally the same, but another book I loved about grief is called Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter. There is a giant crow that is the manifestation of the father's grief when his wife dies. So freaking creepy, so freaking awesome! 💚
You know, I've read a lot of conflicting reviews about TTBU ... but after watching this vid and seeing how moved you are by it, I'm in! Have it on my Audible TBR
Ive only seen the movie adaptation of Im Thinking of Ending Things so far, and believe me when I say I will never forget Toni Collette as the mom…..and the scene where she’s switching ages (?) and suddenly becomes an energetic housewife version of herself. Amazing
I just picked up Ghost Wall and was looking for reviews. Good to see we have similar taste in books! This Thing Between Us gave me A24/Hereditary vibes I love it so muchhhhh
a24 vibes is the perfect description god it was so good let me know your thoughts on ghost wall!! it’s a little bit slower paced than this thing between us but because it’s super short i found it hard to put down
Honestly the movie version of I’m Thinking of Ending Things is very good, even if its connection or similarity to the (also very good) book is tenuous. It’s something to keep in mind as you watch or read them.
Also I'm exceptionally curious to read Paradais now, since it sounds like "what if Ducks, Newburyport but not a thousand+ page doorstop." I love Ducks, Newburyport, mind. I'm just wondering what a short version would be like 😂
This popped up in my suggestions and I’m so glad:) Gus Moreno’s book was spooky and beautiful but I always think about one part with the belly button and it repulses me so badly, so effective haha. Thanks for the other suggestions~
Ngl I saw “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” before I read the book and LOVED IT! It definitely doesn’t hurt that it was adapted and directed by Charlie Kaufman, combined with the out of this world cast with the likes of Jessie Buckley, Jessie Plemons, Toni Collette, and David Thewlis. It’s so deeply unsettling and really captures the tone of the novel but you are most certainly correct, they do stray away a bit from the original text but for me personally it worked :)
I read This Thing Between Us because of this video! I couldn’t remember the line before I revisited this video and hearing it again with the context… yeah that line got me too. Also, I made the terrible mistake of reading it at work and yeah. I cried at work but the one person who might have seen did not call me out on it LOL
Btw, if you liked This Thing Between Us, you’ll probably like The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall. Less horror than TTBU, but there’s still something pursuing main character, amnesia mystery, and dealing with the grief of losing his wife. It gets weird in a good way.
Lmao I loved the movie "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" and had no idea it was a book. Now I'm really excited to read it. Just put it on hold from my library.
As soon as you mentioned Fernanda I was like Hurricane season! HURRICANE SEASON!!! That's the book he should have read. So glad you are reading it now. It was mind-blowing for me. Could not stop thinking about it once I finished it. And as you said, sentences are looong, but once you get into the groove, you can not stop reading.
I think you’ll like The Fisherman by John Langen. It too is about the intersection of grief and horror that goes into cosmic territory. One of , favorite recent reads.
I just stumbled upon your channel. I love it when the algorithm does something right. This Thing Between Us has been on my tbr for ages. Getting it asap!
