I feel you 100%. This book was a roller coaster ride, and I loved every twist and turn and lull. Smith is a phenomenal writer. I love the webs she weaves in this book, her FIRST freakin' book! I am definitely a fan. I haven't read NW, but I did read and enjoy the hell out of Autograph Man and On Beauty.
I knew you'd like it. NW is a very experimental styles of writing so not for everybody. I loved it except the ending. White Teeth is definitely her masterpeiece. Hope to get to Swing Time next month. You look great in this video!
On Beauty is a retelling of the classic Howard's End just to let you know. I wasn't totally over the moon about it when I first read it but I hope to read Howard's End so that I can follow up with On Beauty. Happy reading!
I'm glad you liked this one! I had a similar experience with her. I started off with The Autograph Man, I could tell she was a great writer but wasn't completely enamored with the book, then I read "Swing Time" and loooooved it. I'm going to read On Beauty soon.
I was looking for a review to convince me to read it next 'cause I had another book on my list, but and I found your video. You talk so passionately about it I'm starting it right now. Thanks!
I finished it and...oh wow... I'm not sure I can explain right now what I'm feeling because there's so much but, what a book! I loved every page. Is that even possible? I cannot remember the last time it happened, and I read all the time, but this... this was magical. Now I understand what you were talking about, and yes, you were so right! It took me a month to read it because I didn't want it to end. Also, what a fool I was to leave it for so long on my bookshelf. You can tell I'm over the moon, I know, that's why I think it'll be tough to choose what to read next. I'm thinking maybe some non-fiction or essays, something like that.
I'm currently reading the book, 1/3rd in, and I'm still not sure why the book is called White Teeth. I still don't get the metaphor and because of that, I feel like I'm missing a lot of nuanced meanings. Anyone?
Please do an entire review in an auctioneer voice. So I just got White Teeth from the library, and I haven't felt "in the mood" every though I loved NW and I loved On Beauty... She wrote this when she was like 22, right? Dang! You look gorgeous today by the way!
