What books do you need for success foraging wild edibles? There are a lot of books and guides on the subject, some are good and others are not. These are the books you will need to succeed in foraging. They cover everything from identification, harvesting, preparation, and toxic look a likes. Books like Nature's Garden, The Forager's Harvest, Wild Edible Plants From Dirt To Plate are all a necessary ingredient to foraging successfully in the field. Don't ever limit your books and guides to just one or two, make sure you have several! In this video we will go over 6 of the books and guides I wish I had when I was starting out ten years ago. If I had these books I would have had much more success in foraging wild edibles and medicinal plants, without all the trial and error.

I love the book reviews! I need to get Thayer's books still. I got all the rest tho! I appreciate the recommendations alot, they're super helpful! I got a book from a local college about mushrooms from my state a while ago. It goes into good detail with descriptions and is awesome for identification.

Hi there! Thank you for your reviews. This helps a lot. I’m just getting into wild plants/herbalism and there is a lot of info out there which makes my head spin🤪 A couple of quick questions: Any of these books or maybe other ones out there cover nutritional value of wild plants/herbs? Also, would I purchase Peterson Field Guide Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs if live and plan to forage in California (maybe Oregon)? I would greatly appreciate your advice. Thank you in advance!🙏🏻🌞

Yes, there is a lot of information about wild plants and it is a lot to take in for sure. It's important to go at your own pace as to prevent burnout. So don't let it get to you, we're all beginners at some point. The book by John Kallas has a nutrient chart in the back of the book comparing the plants covered and our most nutritious domestic crops. Wild edibles usually win! Yes, it's important to have a guide that covers your area. I have no experience in that part of the country nor do I have experience with that particular guide but if it's like the other field guides from them then I'd say it's definitely worth the $20 for it. Hope this helps and if you have any more questions don't be afraid to ask!

Trillium: Wild Edibles that was such a quick getting back:)) Thank you! And thank you for supportive words. I literally got a headache today from trying to understand which books to invest into for the past few days. But I really want to learn from the best and try to avoid wasting energy and time on average stuff. The truth is I’m probably going to be doing a lot of learning on my own. So having the right info in my hands is beyond crucial. Your book recommendations confirmed some of the choices I’ve made already from previously doing my research before I even found your channel!:) So that makes me content. Wish I could just go to a book store and have them all opened and compare instead of trying to read on amazon the description for each one at a time. But then I probably wouldn’t have time and going to work, lol. Now since were still in quarantine... But yeah, it takes a lot of time and energy to figure it out:/ I’m also interested in making medicine. There are of course many books in that subcategory as well. Wondering what you would say about Making Plant Medicine by Richo Cech? Or go Matthew Wood route? I feel like they’re all great books! Unless, you would recommend something different. Thank you again!

Can you do a review on false stinging nettle please
@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 6 лет назад
I can try to do a video on it, however I generally don't find it very often. It definitely grows in my area, I just probably don't pay enough attention to it, lol! I have done a video on clearweed though, which is a relative to the false nettle, if you're interested. Thanks for the feedback James, it's greatly appreciated!

Do you juice the plants you forage?
@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 4 года назад
Not really. I might juice up some raspberries and mulberries every now and again though.

Josh I would think Ohio and Indiana have just about the same wild edibles. If you get around to responding to this comment, let me know what your views are. I think the Indiana guide you reviewed should work for me.
@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 3 года назад
You're pretty much correct. I'm not sure on exact numbers but I'd feel comfortable guesstimating about 90 to 95% of our plants are similar. I think you guys have some things we don't and vice versa, like Trillium species for one example but mostly everything is the same. So yeah, if you want to purchase that book it should serve you very well. Hope this helps and thanks for asking Tim!
