Jess please do a video on your reading habits!!
@groovynovy

2 things: Firstly, I think it's amazing how many books you read about the african/african american/caribbean experience. As a caribbean woman myself, I feel that black stories are (not always but mostly) read by the black population, but it's really refreshing and inspiring to know that people from different ethnicities support the work as well! Secondly, you are so right about keeping your childhood books. I'm in my mid-twenties now, and I've been an avid reader my whole life. A lot of my childhood/teenage books were kept at my mom's house once I moved out, and she's given a lot of them away to other children as well, as I never thought that I would read them a second time. After watching this video I texted my mom immediately to save the books she had left of my old collection so that I could pass them down to my future children! Thank you for the inspiration, Jess!

its a bit weird tho that as a white woman, a wealthy white woman, who doesn't do much in terms of actual activism in helping these communities etc seems to heavily rely on these stories of diaspora and generational trauma, for example, in her studies. it's just very White and uncomfortable
@josepha133
@josepha133 5 лет назад
enodia williams I get where you’re coming from, but would it be better for white people to pretend those difficulties people of colour and people in poorer parts of the world deal with don’t exist? I doubt it. Plus, learning about it is the first step. And if the only thing that brings about is more respect and empathy for those less privileged, that’s better than nothing.

Marie Kondo's philosophy is really just if it doesn't bring you joy then you're doing yourself a disservice by cluttering your life with that "stuff". She's not telling people to go throw out ALL of their books- or even half of their books. She is speaking to those who hold onto "stuff" because of some indescribable obligation, because they haven't bothered to go through things in decades, because they just simply don't want to get rid of things. Your books bring you joy- ALL of them. And seeing all of your books in a collection like that, in a pretty damn neat and organized display- makes you proud and brings joy too. I really don't think Marie would argue with that :)
@frankiebaxter2590
@frankiebaxter2590 5 лет назад
she actually doesn't say that about people who just "simply don't want to get rid of things"... the opposite really. its not about decluttering its about organising and bettering your relationship with the material things around you.

I’ve just read his dark materials for the first time (I’m 20)!! I’m really happy I waited so long to read it, simply because I read it right after I finished a pretty hardcore course on Milton and i was so happy to find all the themes and theories from Paradise Lost appear in Pullman’s books! I really geeked out over it, especially since I wrote my final essay on Milton’s metaphysics and Dust is basically Pullman expanding on just that! It was really amazing to read these children’s books and find such complex and literary references in them that I was able to recognize and think on!!!

easy: the time you spend on your phone/computer is the time she uses for reading. it's not that hard once you see how much you spend on things like social media and once you learn how to properly manage your time. (this is coming from someone who read 108 books in 2018)

I love to read but unfortunately I have depression and one of my symptoms when it gets really bad is I stop wanting to read. I’ve been in a really bad slump for months now but this video has really inspired me to pick up the books that I neglected last year. All your book videos inspire me, the way you talk about books you clearly love them, and your book shelf has a really warm and cosy vibe. Thanks for this video :)

Alice E you should try audiobooks! I also suffer from depression and find reading falls to the side but audiobooks have helped me a lot with getting back into reading. Check out the app Libby. It syncs with your library card and you can check out ebooks and audiobooks.

Absolutely lovely bookshelf! Now I'm extremely curious to learn more about your reading habits. I have so so so many books that I've collected that I have yet to read and I tend to start many books at once, which leads me to become a tad overwhelmed. I'd love to know if you have read only one book at a time or several, when and where you read, et cetera.

This is the best surprise, Jessie! I totally agree with you, I think that the way we organize our books is a reflection of who we are, of our journey and of what we love about reading; that's why I really enjoy getting to know how other people organize their bookshelves: it's often very different from what I personally do and I love that! This tour really shows your love for reading and it was very interesting to getting to know your "life as a reader". I saw that we share some of our "childhood/teenage" favorites, such as "His Dark Materials" (I was obsessed with that trilogy and I think that it shaped me a lot), Jostein Gaarder's "Sophie' world" and Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights". As for your to be read shelves, I think you would really enjoy Farenheit 451 - I could totally be wrong about that as well, because taste in reading is subjective, but it's a quite straightforward yet very powerful dystopian classic. The writing is very simple but this makes the message even more poignant. P.S. Just wanted to say that I think your blogpost on "Doing more things I love" was brilliant, as someone else pointed out in the comments :)

Won't let me post on your blog but just read your Doing more things you love article and THANK YOU for this opinion piece!I think this is your niche. Writing more about ideas, society, millenial culture, 'girls' esque. Combining fashion, beauty, self expression with more substantial writing to feed the brain. I think recently a lot of criticism on your youtube has been coming from an inability 'to connect' with you; content just being outfits, hauls, items, purchases, lifestyles and narration of activity without the person's thoughts and life behind it. I'm sure you then struggle though with keeping your private life private but wanting to create genuine personal content. I think that would be a good medium! Talk about ideas, the world, the graduate's existential crisis, how you find london, personal expression, creativity, culture you enjoy in london and take people along with it, experiential stuff. You'll feel more inspired and your audience will feel more connected? :)

Please read Zadie Smith: On Beauty first - not read section - she used EM Forster’s Howard’s End as a template. So cleverly done as Zadie’s masterpiece is set amidst America’s Ivy League colleges. It’s a tribute and a riff. Think breathless canter through American academic contemporary life. African American themes ... lots of the unexpected. Hey Jess - really a nice video! I am in need of your help. I need to find a good read for my boyfriend in the fantasy genre. I remember that you recommended one at some point and i feel like i wrote i down but now i just can't find it. The thing is, i am from Denmark and most bookstores and publishers does not find it worth their while to translate that kind of genre or at least keep the english version in store. Therefore i my self is not that familiar with the genre. Sadly enough i am actually studying literature myself, but that is very much mostly the more classic ones, so my knowledge in this area is simply not great. Do you have a good suggestion? He is not the biggest of readers but do love the fantasy/fantastic genre. Best wishes Sidsel (sorry for the gramma and the length ;) )
