The long-awaited last shelf of fiction! We finally get to brush shoulders with Peter Pan, Sherlock Holmes, Jay Gatsby, and other beloved characters, plus some mid-century gems like The Hobbit.* The late Victorian era was where I fell in love with classic literature, so I have a special affection for these books.
Forgot to mention it in the video, but I have the complete Lord of the Rings, of course - it's on my "Re-Read" shelf at the moment. :) There's a couple of other books in the same situation, like Doyle's The Lost World.

I will always hold a special place in my heart for Sherlock Holmes, but you can really tell in Conan Doyle's work just how much he hated Sherlock. Especially once we get into His Final Bow and The Case-Book. I adore the authors historical fiction like The White Company and The Adventures and Exploits of Brigadier Gerard. All the love and care we originally saw with Sherlock, you really see in the main characters of his historical fiction. I just feel bad that he was made to write more Sherlockian stuff as opposed to writing what he really loved which was the historical, horror/spiritualism stuff. Though, with the spiritualism, Conan Doyle became obsessed with that after his son was killed in battle during WWI. Him and Rudiyard Kipling both lost their sons, but only Kipling's son's remains were ever recovered which happened rather recently. I can imagine that Kipling is resting a lot more easily knowing that his son's body was found and interred under his name plate/tombstone.

Really good insights, Tiff. I appreciate Doyle’s other writing, too! I remember reading somewhere that it was joked, at one point, that Doyle was knighted for Holmes, even though he was officially knighted for his writing on the Boer War. I guess his readers were looking for escapism from war, historical, and political topics. Professor Challenger is great fun, but there is something extra magical about Holmes, to the point where you really wish he were a real person. Maybe people living in uncertain times hanker for a superhero, one that is a bit closer to home than Sir Nigel or Gerard. :)

@@marianhreads Holmes is timeless, I feel. I got into forensic science because of my love for the character and for the insight that Conan Doyle had with crime solving and forensics. When I was a child, I used to pretend that I was a female version of Sherlock Holmes. Either that or it was Nancy Drew (Alice Roy) if you're French. Looking back on it, it was super cringy, but it was great fun.

@@TiffWaffles That is so cool! :) There was a time I wanted to get into computer forensics. That part didn't happen, but I did study chemistry and violin in high school!

@@marianhreads I always wanted to get into forensics in some capacity, but even though I have a degree in forensic science, I chose to also get into biotechnology-forensics with the hope to work in the archaeogenetics field (ancient DNA). Forensic science will always appeal to me, but forensic scientists are obligated by law to be expert witnesses in the legal courts and the idea of sitting there and defending my profession in front of the crown and jury was utterly terrifying to me. I don't know too much about computer forensics, unfortunately. However, it is a fascinating branch of forensic science. Ah, I remember high school chemistry. It was such a fun time. I think it's cool that you got violin classes in high school! Was it the first time you had picked up a violin or was it a class that helped you pick up more skills? My school never had something as fancy as violin classes and I am always so amazed with the skills that violinists have.

I assumed Doyle had written something besides Sherlock, but I'd never heard of any particular titles! Fun to think he was doing what we would consider historical fiction. Yay WODEHOUSE! :-D Haven't read "Til We Have Faces".....always daunted by the premise -- same for his nonfiction Allegory of Love.

Yeah, Doyle was bit of a history nerd...he also wrote about the Huguenots ("The Refugees") and the Napoleonic Wars ("Brigadier Gerard," a series of tall tales). Apparently he was disgruntled that Sherlock Holmes was more beloved by readers than, say, The White Company. Famous people problems, I say... You should try Till We Have Faces sometime! The first part is basically TV drama (in a good way). The second part is more esoteric but by that point you're hooked. ;)

Interesting, I didn't know SHE was a Victorian novel. I was fond of the movie starring Ursula Andress as a little kid. Even at a young age, she was a wowser to look at haha... and now I'm reminded of The Egyptian which was a popular book made into a movie along the similar vein as SHE. Huge Tolkien and CS Lewis Fan, I believe Amazon's production of LOTR is beginning any day now. Anyways, love the bookshelf tour I could never do a book review or analysis beyond "yeah I liked the book, or no I didn't" lol

Sometimes a reaction is the best book review! I often find myself in these tours going "great book...just read it" haha. It'll be interesting to see previews of the Amazon LOTR. If done well, there is huge potential for the series format to touch upon many parts of the book Jackson skimmed over. Never say never, but I'm not sure anyone can replace the original cast for me.

Jackson knocked it out of the park. I remember the goosebumps I got when Galadriel did the intro and the golden letters emerged, what really blew me away was the pre-history stuff... seeing Sauron emerge and then the poor story of Smeagol. I never expected PJ to even get that in-depth so that completely blew me away. Getting goosebumps again just thinking about it :)
