Bookstores Bazaar, Beyazıt Bookstores Carsisi or Istanbul Bookstores Carsisi is the historical bazaar in Fatih where old and new books are sold. Beyazıt Mosque used to be a cultural center due to its proximity to Istanbul University, the Grand Bazaar and Beyazıt State Library. Even though the priorities and qualities of the second-hand booksellers and the books sold have changed over time, it is still one of the frequented places of Fatih.
Date
In the Ottoman Empire, second-hand bookshops were formed around large mosques. In this, there was a return of the mosque-oriented commercial and social life. On the other hand, the Booksellers' Bazaar was not in its current location, but was inside the Grand Bazaar. According to the information given by Evliya Çelebi, the old bookstores bazaar consisted of about 50 shops in the Grand Bazaar. About 300 people worked in these shops. Hammer, on the other hand, stated that these shops were scattered in the bazaar. During this period, rare works with various miniatures, manuscripts, religion, philosophy and logic books were sold here.
The settlement of second-hand booksellers in Hakkaklar Bazaar continued until the 1910s. The second-hand booksellers in the Grand Bazaar and the fezs in the Hakkaklar Bazaar changed places over time. Over time, the current place was known as the Sahaflar Çarşısı. It suffered a great fire in 1950. The municipality reorganized this place in a reinforced concrete way. After 1952, the municipality wanted only books to be sold here.[1] Hakkı Tarık Us was effective in this regard.
The bazaar has two gates. One is located right next to the Beyazıt Mosque, while the other opens onto the road leading to the Grand Bazaar. In 1981, the municipality placed a bust of İbrahim Müteferrika, the first Turkish printer. In the middle of the bazaar, a tombstone belonging to Sahaf Kirimli Hasan Efendi, which was brought from the graveyard of the Shepherd Sergeant Mosque in Laleli, was placed under the tree. There are also fountains of the Bazaar that are in the shape of a dispenser. In general, it has lost its old cultural function.[1] Its proximity to Istanbul University has increased student interest here. However, after the transformation in the Turkish education system in general, the second-hand booksellers here lost their bibliographic features. Mainly university preparatory books, books and sets for foreign language education stand out.
Hüseyin Avni Dede, who lives under the plane tree at the entrance of the bazaar and sells various works, is the well-known figure of the square.
