Generally speaking, I am not a fan of memoirs, so it's unfortunate that 4 of these 6 books were just that. Since my highest rated book this round was one of the memoirs, I clearly don't uniformly hate them, but I tend to dislike them more often than not.

Thats what is called perfect judging, your top three made it through!
@@scallydandlingaboutthebook2711 Sorry, Ros! If it's any consolation, I feel like translated fiction has to be the most difficult to judge of the three categories. Since it's a new category, it likely also has the most room for interpretation among the judges, too.
Sounds like you got off to an even worse start with your group than I did. Oh my God I hate it when students leave their thesis till the end. I want to scream, "You aren't writing a damn mystery novel. I shouldn't have to figure out what you are writing about."
Oh boy, well now I will have to go watch your BTP judging video to compare notes. 😂 And yes - never "save" your thesis for the end. I will have to remember that quip about not writing a mystery novel and use it in my future classes.
Glad you liked Orwell's Roses, I've been waiting for some reviews of that to come out to help me decide if I read it... Sounds like a good book for a certain mood. I've not seen one good review of White Magic, it's beginning to take on train crash appeal.
Yes, I think Orwell's Roses is a good book for a contemplative mood. Re: White Magic - I mean...if you want to read it to see if you can understand what the hell the appeal of Carl is to the author (and then promise to film a ranty review), be my guest. 😂
I've just looked at which ones went through for your category, and it looks like you nailed it! I live when that happens! 😂 I've added your number one to my TBR 🙌❤️
Oh boy, I feel like I enjoyed my books more than you did? I judged translated last round and am in nonfiction this round. Four books to go!!! I am always behind...lol..
Oooh, I'm very behind on booktube and didn't realize you're posting again! Welcome back. :) Yikes, White Magic sounds cringey.... The Winfred Rembert book sounds fascinating, and I'm curious about Orwell's Roses. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I just noticed that Golden Girls print in the background. So cool! That’s too bad about Levy’s book.I haven’t read that one but read the first two of her memoirs, which I loved. I was assigned to translated fiction last time and this round will be judging NF. Did you get another assignment this time around?
Oh, thank you 🙂 It's my all-time favorite TV show. I've heard other people say they really liked the first two Levy memoirs but not so much the third. I hadn't read the other two myself, but I'm glad to hear that you loved them. I am taking the quarterfinals round off and will sign up to judge the semifinals round. Hope you enjoy your nonfiction reading this round. Translated fiction seems like it would be difficult to judge!
The ones I ranked #1 and 2 I really liked, but I attribute most of the lackluster-ness to 4 out of the 6 books being memoirs, which I generally tend not to like.
My group was fine, not great. I don’t really have any compunction to talk about any of them haha. Though, Girlhood was exceptional. I just am not that big into nonfiction. Probabbbly higher rated books than you had though. Mostly they were meh. Not baaad. So I won! Conversely, the group I was assigned now, for fiction, I’ve read all but one of. So it’ll be an eaaaasy round. God look at that cover for Real Estate. NA always gets shafted.
Ah, well I'm glad you won't have to do much extra reading during the quarterfinals, then. 🙂 I haven't read Girlhood, but it is one I would like to get to at some point. Was surprised to see that it didn't advance. Glad to hear that you really liked it.
@@CourtneyFerriter a bunch of surprises. I wonder if the prize will continue lol his last email seemed… mmm “stressed”, rightfully so, with people ghosting.
@@SpringboardThought Robert's BTP emails are usually stressed. In fairness to him, I'm sure it's much easier to get people to volunteer to read 6 random books than it is to get them to actually follow through and submit ballots on time.
What's with all the memoirs? Your top two picks were the two I was looking forward to reading the most from this group. Orwell's Roses does sound intriguing though. I'm glad I will not have to read the Levy now. Not a fan. Always appreciate your thoughts on NF. Are you judging the quarters?
Honestly, I am still bitter that Louis Menand's The Free World didn't make the octofinals list, even more so after reading all these poorly-conceived memoirs 😂 As I did last year, I am taking the quarterfinals round off (this month and the beginning of May are very busy with end-of-semester grading for my job), but will likely sign up to judge the semifinals. Did you judge this round?
@@CourtneyFerriter I was hoping The Free World would make it through! Arg. Yes I did judge NF group H. My top pick didn't make it through (The Amur River), there were no 5 star reads for me, but I did quite enjoy 4 of the 6. I will be judging TF group D for the quarter. End-of-Semester busyness - good luck! Wally and Char better do a good dog-job of making you take breaks!
@@TheQuietMidden Sorry to hear you favorite didn't advance, but glad you liked most of the books you read. Good luck with translated fiction! That seems like it would be a hard category to judge.
This did not sound like a great group. I am not a fan of memoirs either, but they are hard to avoid in the Booktube prize. I think 25% of the first round books were memoirs. I have Orwell’s Roses in my group for the second round. I have read only Animal Farm and 1984 by Orwell, and I know nothing about flowers.
