Some recommended headphones I think would be cool. Also a decent boom mic stand. I'm looking for one now to get the mic off my camera so I can get a little bit more space between my mic and my camera.

My first boom op gig was on a student short film, knowing nil about sound on set (I studied sound in a recording studio environment, so besides the standard recording workflow and microphone spec I knew bugger all). I used, get this... a hotshoe Rode microphone screwed onto a camera tripod, duct-taped the legs together into a makeshift pole and taped a Zoom H4n on the end. It was a massacre, but I learned a lot. After that embarrassment I went out and bought a cheap aluminium boom pole on Amazon. It's actually done so well it's still in my kit, though I'm looking for an upgrade now. The locks are holding on for dear life, at full extension the sections rattle and I run an external cable, which can be tough to manage if I'm doing a wide shot at 3m distance, then do a bit of handheld Foley during a quick break. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, this was very helpful in seeing what I need to consider for my next upgrade.

“The last thing you want on set is the phrase hold for sound, I hate to say that because it always sounds like we’re being hated on when we’re on a film set but it’s true” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 for all you young beginners it can be true if we fail to communicate! Talk to your 1st AD and your Dp and be proactive about the scene. Get in there during blocking check for shadows and standing room etc. this will ensure that nobody’s ego will be hurt because we are all on the same team! We are all there to serve the production. Have a great shoot and pay attention. ✌️❤️🎧

I think the right angle connector lower third was the most underrated thing in this video, if you already have a pole with integrated cable and straight exit throwing on a Cable with a 90° XLR would be a big improvement. You can also get 90° XLR adapters. I feel bad for anybody who got spoiled and got to use a boom with integrated 90 for the first time they used one. Oh yeah I'll just get one like I used it was nice, Oh that is the most expensive! I can't directly remember and apparently I didn't take a picture but I'm pretty sure my first time using a broom it had an integrated 90. :-( I like what you said about getting the integrated cable, it's there if you need it when Wireless don't work end it helps with counterbalance putting the WPack lower.

Nice! I use my boom pole with XLR at base/internal cable for studio shoots mounted with a $20 boom pole support holder on a c-stand and don't have to mess with cable runs down the boom arm. Suggestions? Other than actually hearing a lapel mic on yourself, what would a buyer look for spec wise so they at least have a chance of getting something that will sound good? I have 10 (?) lapel mics between $50 - $300 and they all suck. :)

I personally really really HATE internal cabling. Once the internal cable broke then it will be just weight of your boom pole and not easily repaired on set, Btw weight of boom pole is to me it’s theone of the most important thing when I chose boom pole. It will directly affect to your performance. When boom is lighter then you can hold up longer. Move A LOT FASTER. After long day shooting you less tired and there’s no pain in the muscles. Counter weights...??? Huh. I dont even need it because my boom pole and blimps are well thought out to reduce weight. And he said that when you extend it it not really sounds shakey and noisy but it’s absolutely NOT. it’s very noisy when you move boom faster than most of time and it will possibly ruin the shot. WHY dont you guys just train yourself to get really used to non-internal cables?!?? It’s more reliable, lighter, quieter, changeable. Im pretty sure that 95% of time I can coil cables faster than anyone on set and I have zero troubles with external cabling. INTERNAL CABLING IS FOR LAZY ASS BASTERDS. CHANGE MY MIND.

What can be done about ground loop hums and in-home electromagnetic interference in the home/apartment. Asking because most of my recording is done through usb interface powered by ac adapter.
@a_ram
@a_ram 5 лет назад
Those are generally on a specific frequency and can be dealt with in post by adding a notch to your EQ where you need it (effectively lowering the volume of the specific frequency). I would also suggest you buy RX elements from izotope. If you wait, you can get it for 30 dollars when it is on offer and it will do a great job getting rid of noise of that type.
@a_ram

And lucky you, B and H have elements on offer right now for 10 dollars! www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1356812-REG/izotope_10_rxe_rx_elements_audio.html

I would say maybe a better quality power adapter or a ferrite choke on the cord might do. Could also be the interface or interference on the USB cable or just interference from the computer itself, try separating things, test with a different computer, longer cables, again ferrite choke (sometimes you can find the USB cables with the built-in lumps). Might not necessarily be ground loops if it's powered by a DC brick, usually they don't carry the ground through. Would be interesting to know if you figured out what was causing it a year later?
