A few years ago, I went on a camping trip all over Colorado. I went to a place where my grandparents had a cabin for many years in central CO. I was travelling in a Ranchero and tent camping wherever I went. When I arrived at this familiar place, I soon realized this place had deteriorated into a poorly maintained trash dump. I went to the lodge/office and requested trash bags. I was greeted by the new owners with surprised looks and excuses about raccoons raiding the trash dumpster, however they did give me two thirty gallon trash bags. I spent the rest of the day until dusk picking up trash all over the campground proper. I filled both bags to capacity in about six hours. The next morning, I got two more trash bags from the office and proceeded up Blue Creek valley and filled both of those bags in about eight hours. I was very disappointed that the place I loved when I was a kid (thirty-five years prior) had been allowed to become an eyesore and hazard to wildlife. When I was a kid, this area was completely unspoiled. Grandpa would go with us over to the creek, and we kids would fish for Brook Trout for a couple hours and bring back a bucket of "brookies" for Grandma to cook up. The water was crystal clear and clean with no fear of contamination. The surrounding valley was pure and natural with no trash to be found. We kids could roam free without fear of hazards. I have always had fond memories of spending a couple weeks at the cabin in the summers, surrounded by nature and loving family. From that moment on, I have always taken trash bags with me any time I went on hikes or camping adventures. Please take care of the environment. IT'S THE ONLY ONE WE HAVE!!!!
I do the same thing in the forest around my home. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, I bring bags with me when I walk with my dog in the forest. It's sad, but most times I find grocery bags lying on the ground with the trash. LEAVE NO TRACE is my motto and wish others would obey this rule. Nature is not a dumpsite. Thanks for all the work you did around your grandpa's place. I am with you in spirit.
I hear you. We live in rural N. Cal. and so much of our forests have been trashed by growers and also hunters. Some of them, including the hunters poop in the open, shoot trees to pieces, leave their old toilet seats lying around, cans, papers, shells.. It seems the age of the chivalrous camper is gone.
Thank you Carolyn for such a sweet and caring video. Some may say its common sense but there appears to be huge segments of people who do not have any. You are such a sweet person and the world is a better place because you are here. I live in the woods and it looks as if you were behind my house lol. Actually I'm blessed with one neighbor a quarter mile in one direction and no others for over a mile in any of the other directions and i love it. Take care and stay safe.
One good suggestion for back country camping is to take an orienteering course and always carry a compass with a whistle. Life saving. #search and rescue 101
The Rangers Know (w/ in a day or so) that you are there. They use long rang Spotting Scopes. You Will Not see them. They see you.Rules are enforced. If you are doing the right things. Rangers WILL NOT bother you. If they see you doing ANY THING wrong. Rangers WILL be ALL OVER YOU. It is for "every ones" safety.
Perfect ! So many folks think it's ok to dump gray water it's NOT. A ranger can ticket you for that, also many places do not want you to burn the bushes /dead sticks in your camp fire. It's nutrients for the soil for the next bush leave it be. tfs Carolyn

Two of my kids are scientists who have worked both as volunteers and paid staff to combat invasive species. You are appreciated for bringing this important subject to light! I've only been watching your videos for a short time but they have really helped me a lot... I have a request. Sometime I would like to see the night sky wherever you are, it must be awesome. I remember seeing the sky overwhelmed with stars when I was a boy living in a rural area of Kentucky, and now all I get to see are the brightest stars in the sky, those that are bright enough to penetrate the light pollution in the town where I live... I'm just a few months away from retiring, and I will be going on the road. I bought a cargo van a few months ago and I'm in the process of turning into my version of a tiny house, and then... well... who knows... all I know is that my first adventure will be westward, and I can't wait to see the stars again... Good advice. If you can pack it in, you should pack it out. I like remote areas also and I'm aware that if I don't feel comfortable I need to move on. Some bad things can happen in beautiful places. Your safety video is one remote campers should watch. Stay safe and travel safe. 🐱
Carolyn, if you are still inFL, and find yourself on the east coast near the space center, I highly recommend stopping at Mrs. Mango's (a little shack-like cottage) on US1 just south of Rockledge, to try their Hibiscus tea. She also sells local honey, natural remedies and other herbal teas, natural salves, etc. Your Pink Tazo tea made me long for some Hibiscus tea. Guess it's time to head home for some. Safe travels!
Hi Carolyn. It is Fran and My Mom. I like seeing your Friendly " Smile" early in the Morning. It Helps to deal with the Struggles I may have to face today. My Mom fell down on the floor at 88 already this morning. My Mom has Parkinson's Disease. Luckily my Mom landed on her Tush ( her Butt),so she did Not break anything. I could Not pull my Mom up from standing in front of her. My Mom said she would get on her knee's,I said " No,you will break your knee". So I got around my Mom in back and asked her to bend her knees and Push,and Push. Meanwhile I put my arms around my Mom's waiste and I quickly pulled her right up! 😁 Luckily the Big Chair was right to my Mom,so I just had my Mom in the sitting position and I moved her butt toward the chair. My Mom just sat down! Done. I am So glad I did Not have to Call 911. My Mom is just fine. She got right up to go to the bathroom right after. No broken bones,no Pain,Nothing! Thank you God for Saving my Mom from hurting herself! After I turned your Channel back on and Enjoyed the " Do's" and " Don't's of Boondocking and Camping on ":Dry" Land. I like how you teach people Not to leave their garbage behind. When I traveled on Vacation in a Car,when I was younger,I saw People throwing Garbage on the street from out of their windows of their Cars or Truck. I Hate when anyone is a liter bug It trashes the Beautiful environment. And advising people Not to dump their grey water is good to. National Forests do Not have to be a Big Free Garbage Dump!!! I am Not Camping now. But I have traveled and Camped out in a tent or Bronco Truck before. I traveled when I was young from Southern California to Chicago Illinois and back again! I am from Chicago and We Love how friendly the people are in Chicago! We Live in a " Safe" area. And Chicago is Very Nice. You rarely get bored here,there is too Much to do. I Love Lake Michgan and North Avenue Beach. Lincoln Park Zoo is Nice. Very Pretty. Navy Pier is Awesome! You can walk All over the place for Miles Outdoors. When I traveled when I was younger,I Loved The Grand Canyon and Colorodo and the Colorodo River. I Love the Gorgeous Mountains tree's and the " Natural" Streams. The sounds of the birds chirping All day is Very delightful. I camped Outside by myself at The Grand Canyon. I was attempting to sleep outside when a Weird Stranger stood near me,when I was doing my bathroom business! So,needless to say I do Not like Camping All Alone. Nope. I do Not mind hikng alone or near water. When I camped in Hart Michigan I went 1 time with a Fun Lady friend. We met Many friendly people at that Campground. I went Camping when I was young in Hart Michigan Alone. I did Not like it 1 bit. They put me around 1-2 Miles from any tent or R.V. So I sat all Alone in pitch dark at night. I hiked Alone a Mile at night to a Camp Fire.If it we're Men,I would Not have stopped. It was All Women and they welcomed me to stay and hang out. I did. I hiked to another camp fire where another Women was,and I stayed until the Sun Rose. I was in a Big Bronco Truck. I was obviously Very Inexperienced at Camping. I would have been just fine if I was able to Park near other Tents or R.V.'s. The Year before When I went with a Lady friend. I Camped out next to maybe 3 or 4 Campers. Not too far. My Friend and I were invited to hang out with Many other People. I did get Lyme Disease in Hart Michigan. I got bitten by a " Deer" tick. I did shower every single day Outdoors. It was a Private Showers for Women only. I enjoyed the Art Festival. I Love meeting " New" people. It is Fun. And I Never litter. I make sure others around me Do Not litter either. I did get treated for my Lyme Disease. I was on Doxcycline 100 mg. for 1 year. And my Lyme Disease went into Remission. Once in awhile my Lyme Disease becomes Active again and I get terrible Painful Spasms in my Calf of my Leg or Legs. And then I take an Antibiotic again and the Spasms Stop! But I really have tried to Avoid Taking too Much Antibiotic's because too much Antibiotic can cause M.R.S.A. or CDeficile which is Horrible to have. Taking Probiotics or Vitamin C and a Multi Vitamin Helps. I need to take Probiotics again or Natural Yogart with Probiotics. I have a Great Suggestion: Tell People how to Avoid getting Lyme Disease. You get Lyme Disease from walking in Tall Grass or Weeds and if a Deer Tick or Mouse Tick Fell Off the Deer,the Tick " Attaches" itself to your Leg or Arm or Body. The Tick can be So Microscopic that you Cannot even see it,unless you Check Very Carefully. And bath regularly if you can. Wah clothes as often as you can. Even if it is hand washing. Carry a good tweezer's,in case you find a Tick,you can Carefully Remove. Take a Photo of the Area of " Where" you have gotten bitten. It is Not true that Lyme Disease sb" Rare". There are Alot of Deer or Mice and those Ticks need a " Host" to feed off their Blood. And they spit their Extremely Harmful Bacteria into a Person. It is called a Spirochete. And every 21 days that Bacteria Multiplies and Multiplies. Lyme Disease is Not Contagious. I did Not know that I was even bitten until after I returned " Home" from my Camping trip. The Camping part was " Fun" when I went with a Fun Lady friend. When I got Home,I noticed a change within me. My Strong Healthy Appetite was gone. And I felt Very Sick inside of me. I got a Flu or Fever for 3;Days,it went on for a Week. For me,I had that Famous " Bullseye" Rash. But Not all People get the Noticeable " Bullseye" rash. I felt Sick and Lathargic. It Affected some of my Photographic Memory. People sometimes ask " Why do you Repeat things?" I am Over it,but Not completely. Lyme Disease can come back at any time. The Spirochete Bacteria of Lyme Disease is Very Bad. I personally Still recommend Camping. Teach the Kid's if People have any,to stay on the dirt road. Do Not walk through Tall grass or Weeds. Where blue jeans and those white socks. And Check your own body Skin,Legs and Arms for the Tiny minuscule Tick. Remove Carefully. If you find a Tick,Burn the Tick so it does Not Attach itself on another Human or Pet Host. Get a Match and hold the Tick with a Tweezer and Burn the Tick to make sure it is Dead and Destroyed. Or you can put in a Zip Lock bag and show the Doctor who knows about Lyme Disease. A Lyme Disease Tick can affect the Heart,Lungs,Brain,Legs,etc... Lyme Disease can cause Lyme Disease Arthritis in the knees or Legs. Lyme Disease can cause Severe Painful Bad Muscle Spasms in your Legs. Eat Garlic with some Meals and Probiotics or Yogart with Natural Active Cultures to Help Kill off this Virus. It is Not,NOT Contagious. Make sure your Dog is Vaccinated with the Lyme Disease Vaccine and Heart Worm if your Dog is like Capone and Loves Exploring. Your Very Smart Not to Reveal " Where" you are,until your Gone from there. It is Extremely Hard to get a Good Lyme Disease Doctor's. Now Doctor's treat based on " Clinical Symptoms". Because you can get a False Negative or False Positive Lyme Disease Blood Test. It Helps to Network with other People with Lyme Disease if you have it. Lyme Disease can be Deadly with Never any Antibiotic Treatment. But I said I do Not over due the Antibiotics either. People Call the Lyme Disease Foundation if you have any questions. There is Great information on the Internet. I did my own Research. See a Doctor that treats on your " Clinical" Symptoms who is Intellegent about this Disease. A google search for small amounts of water is to dig a hole far from water source to dispose of camp suds water....provided the soap is CampSuds or Castile soap
Beautiful area to chillax in for a bit! Thanks for the info regarding "dispersed" camping. I, too, am a firm believer to leave a camping spot very clean. It disgusts me to see garbage left behind by people. I want to suggest to them to not bother to camp if they can't be respectful of the land, but I know how how indignant some people can be. Enjoy your time there!

Great, great do's and don'ts. Regarding rescue devices, if you need a device for "stay in touch with friends/family" PRIMARILY, and SECONDARILY it MAY help you in an emergency, then Spot is the way to go. However, it has technical limitations that are significant, and cannot be overcome, regarding an actual emergency. If you understand and accept these, it's a fine device BUT you need to recognize that there are many, many cases in which Spot cannot help you. If you primarily need a RESCUE device, (i.e. a PLB), then use something like and ACR or a McMurdo. There is a reason the other devices cost 2x as much as a Spot.

Awesome video Carolyn-been watching here and there over the last year, been on the road since 2012 just starting to comment and be posting shortly-🙃 Anyhow, lol, myself I take pics when I park usually cleanup someone else's messs-🤬 and many times of used those pics and instead of hearing "you gotta go" I'll get a "just make sure your gone in the morning or don't stay more than a day-maybe two" and it feels good to boot knowing you're helping keep America clean!! My parents taught me to leave a place better than it was when I got there! That's been my life Moto! Thank you for being that our. I live in the Panhandle of Florida and endure yearly Spring breakers! These kids leave our beautiful area in a horrific condition! I often wonder what were they ever taught!

The scenery is very pretty and what I would prefer for camping. I'm wondering if this is where you were before when an old lady knocked on your door at night and asked you to move, then she took the spot. I've also wondered if you are considering traveling east with Bob Wells, just for the change.
#188 Conservation! Carolyn, its everybody's duty to keep our lands so all can use them. You are a Good Teacher and explain it well! As our population increases, the need to preserve the lands around us increase. Take a look at the Oceans, they are septic tanks that all the worlds nations use a dump. Very Sad!
Something that I think is a great thing to do is to pick up trash, if you see it laying in an otherwise lovely area. Obviously this would come with a proviso ...if someone dumps a LOT of stuff, it would not be practical to take it away ... but, my motto is to leave a place BETTER than I found it ;-) Just a thought ......... :-)
Continued. Hi,I still recommend Camping. Just walk on dirt roads or Lower grass. If you have to cut through Tall grass make sure you where blue jean pants and socks and Closed shoes,like Nike Gym Shoes or any brand of GYM shoes. I Love wearing shorts too Carolyn. If you wear shorts and short sleeves because it is Too Hot outside,then try to stay Walking on a dirt raid or where there is " Shorter" Grass. I got " Lost" at night and I cut through Tall Weeds and Grass. I had on shorts and short sleeves when I got bitten by the Lyme Disease Tick. I saw Several Pretty Wild Deer not too far from my tent in Hart Michigan Many years ago. It is Not True that you have to be in a Foreign Country to get Lyme Disease either. Lyme Disease is Alive and Very Prevalent in United States. Anywhere there is Deer or Mice. Ticks Love to feed off of Deer or Mice Blood. Lyme Ticks are a Parasite the needs either a Animal or Human Host ( person) to Feed of and Infect the Blood and Healthy Body. Once your Bitten it Attacks the Healthy Immune System. It is Best to get Diagnosed and treated Immediately before the Lyme Disease Progresses into More Harmful Stages. Lyme Disease can affect the Brain as I said and it can cause Big Mood Swings or Depression or Memory Loss. People have been Mistakenly Misdiagnosed by Many Doctor's and they can be told they have Dementia or Muri ple Sclerosis and varies other Diseases. Read up Alot on Lyme Disease if you think you may have Lyme Disease. Remember to Call The Lyme Disease Foundation to Learn More. The Best Doctor was in New York who treated people and they tried to Close his office down. And Health Insurance Companies do Not to pay on this. Make sure you take Many Photo's if you ever get a " Bullseye" Rash to have Evidence that you have been bitten. Like I said,there is Not always the Bullseye Rash. I Recommend Alot Camping Outdoors. And enjoying Nature and the birds and things like that. Just try to stay on dirt roads or Lower Cut Grass. Wear Protective Clothing if your Adventurous and Want to Hike. We enjoy your videos! Thanks! Just a note though............ Enjoy our Public Lands while they are still available. My wife and I have spent 3-6 months a year boondocking on our wonderful Public Lands for the past 48 years. It's been a wonderful life. We just hung up our keys and with no children or grandchildren, we have no ax to grind. Just beware that there are some very powerful people who are working very hard to either directly sell off our Public Lands or turn over our Public Lands to each individual state to control. If the latter happens, every year when the state has a budget deficit, they will just sell off some of their Public Lands to supplement their budget. It won't be long before all those great boondocking spots will be posted with NO TRESPASSING - PRIVATE PROPERTY signs! Read for yourself by Goggling 'Privatization of our Public lands'. It is already happening. VOTE against the folks who want to take this wonderful heritage given to us by our forefathers. No other country in the world has large tracts of land owned by their citizens and available for their use. Let's keep it that way! PROTECT OUR PUBLIC LANDS

Carolyn, you open a can of worns with the gray water issue.( pack it in pack it out) i can take my gray water valve and open it for it to drip over 100 miles. is that ok ? no so when bob take a sponge bath and dump its out its not ok. thats the problem with staying in a van.
mike excavator1 we drip our grey water into a cheap plastic flower box. The water evaporates but the junk in it just dries out in the bottom. We had to seal up the drain holes with silicone and wrap some screen around it to keep the birds out.
Thank you for all your wonderful shares, they have educated me much more than I had and I thought I had much of it free, your SMART ID SAY Super kind, and well versed in what your talking about. Giving correct terms, as you do make a HUGE differance, your rocking it, and living how I see it with true freedom, granted it not always utopia but the fact that it is most of the time quality of life is as close to utopia as can imagine, I admire your spirt and frankly impressed and thank you for motivation, I hope your announcement is a new RV if that's what you want / need and the math of what you've spent and are going to spend (annually) might as well have the money going to a even less stressful time. I'm postive you've thought about this, I hope since you love to read, I hope some of that education reading is all about the RIG YOU OWN IS, SO YOU CAN DO YOUR OWN smaller and even med. sized repairs. I would suggest you learn all about how easy it is to replace your own wheel bearings, brake discs and brake pads. 2nd to none a nice battery operated air pump and after weather changes CHECK PRESSURE IN TIRES BEFORE each time you leave, notice the tread wear as you can make your tires last 1/3 to twice as long with proper pressure and alignment and of course COLD tire pressure (nothing to do with Max air pressure listed on side of tire, that's only for a tire on that tire bearing the max load, look in your drivers door for recomended tire sizes and pressures and adjust a few pounds if your carrying an extra heavy load, for example I run 3-4 PSI more than recomened as I carry a very heavy Motorcycle on my trailer hitch so that makes my rear tires req. a few pounds more, and of course weather changes your Pressure Change a great deal, Winter pressures or northern parts of country req. likely more air to start day off than if you were in say Slab city were your "cold" tire pressure will be vastly different than say Washington, I'm sure you know cold pressure simply means before you drive anywhere as its normal to pick up 4-6 Psi from driving, and if you set recomened tire pressure even after only driving a few miles, but back to main point, get a CLYMERS repair manual and of course it helps ENDLEDLESSLY to watch a non hack show the repair on RU-vid watch a few of those and any tricks or things to expect won't surprize you, and most car part stores will loan you the tools (with deposit you get back and most will let you barrow no real costs as you get the deposit back, that way you don't have to carry anymore tools than a nicely packaged craftsmen set that might cost 100 bucks or less and of course only buy when running 30-50% off sales. Don't let tire shops over tighten your lugs A) that can warp brand new brake discs and make impossible to change a flat but if they TRQ. To spec using TRQ. Wrench is only way and of course in star pattern, those little ideas will make you even more indepentant, and when you do it and follow TRQ. Specs on every bolt (listed in CLYMERS manual at end of chapter of what ever you'd be working on, now that is only for chassis (truck that underlies your RV) you'll have to have another repair manual for your living space of RV, PARTS LIKE generator, plumbing, dashboard, wiring, tanks etc... I promise between manuals and RU-vid seeing some else do the very repair you would be considering doing, you know what special and all tools needed any tricks it just about makes it so someone who has not done a repair ever can then do it, strength sometimes is an issue but a bit of leverage with inexpensive breaker bar (longer socket holder) that added to your TRQ. wrench and knowing ahead of time from watching the repair done be several people on you tube will tell you if you think you can or can not do the repair. There are many that simply must be done at shop, exhaust for example, front end work, rear end work, driveshaft and just a few more, but most of the normal wear and tear repairs you can save thousands even if you've never picked up a wrench (not saying the case I have no idea) but almost all of us can do it, after all bottom line they are all nuts and bolts and Lube wear needed. You might allready know all this if so I'm sorry just trying to help and if not to let you know YOU CAN DO IT.

Gray water is getting dumped without a second thought. I cracked up when she said you can’t even use spearmint soap or whatever, because spearmint is not indigenous to the area where she is. 😂 The camper is not indigenous to the woods either. 😂
Dumped my gray water once years ago at a campground near a lake. Karma paid me back in full. My German Shepard rolled around in it and smelled like dead fish for the rest of the week. 😂
