Did a favor for a friend yesterday and took his bike for a ride cause it had been sitting for a while. Then... I’ll be damned Fast Eddie showed up and gave me a private lesson! Hows that corner entry? Are you trail braking correctly? Why aren’t you looser on the bars? Point that chin! Body, head, bike! Now go into that empty lot and do tiny circles.... Eddie, your hard work is working. And .....Why are you in my head ????

Been watching you for a LONG time and happy to see the immensely positive impact that you have had & continue to have on riders (me included). I used to watch films and some television to pass time....yet slowly but surely, and now very frequently, I find myself mostly watching MotoJitsu. Literally "EVERY SINGLE TOPIC" that you teach is so important and you explain it so incredibly well. You really do have a genuine gift for teaching. If my high school teachers were like you I would've ended up as a doctor or working for NASA :) What I'm trying to say is - keep doing what you do best and don't change anything in your teaching approach because it honestly is a gift. You should feel so proud of yourself Eddie.

Hey Motojitsu... Great channel, great advice, despite being a rider for exactly 30 years I had some on and off moments like after 1994 until 1999 I didn't ride and from 2014 to 2022 I didn't ride except for my friend lending me his bike on a few occasions. So it is kind of like riding a bike (no pun intended) but there are fundamental and very serious aspects that you have to keep sharp or it could mean your life and you've helped me remember quite a few things on your vids so thanks for the content. Take care. Mike.

As a new rider I find your videos very informative and practical. I live only minutes from a nice twisty mountain that every weekend all you hear is bikes rumbling up and down. As I watched this video today it reinforced that everything I was doing on the up and down ride I did three days ago I am on track to being a safe rider. My work schedule only gives me a few days a month to ride, so when I got home the other day after beeing away for 3 weeks I geared up and hit the mountain on my first bike that I had purchased the month before and only got 2hrs ride before I was heading back to work. I felt very comfortable hitting the mountain on the way up and was a lot slower coming down, when I got to the bottom I stopped and processed my ride down. I then returned back up and come back down quicker than the first run. After doing 6 runs up and down my confidence level went through the roof as I actually practiced what my intuition was telling me and after 6 runs up and down I was two thirds faster than my first run. I realized how important braking is and front brake confidence is amazing, by the last run I was fully in control up and down and was totally loving it so much that I wanted to hang off that mountain all day, only things stopping me was I was low on fuel, rain was setting in and my girlfriend had already been waiting an hour for me. . Front break is my first go to then engine brake, don't even touch the rears now only when fully stopped... Everything in this video is spot on. Videos like this can save many lives or serious injury to person, bike and egos.. Thank you very much for making these videos, I have subscribed and looking forward to going through your old videos and new content as it arrives. My son is a new rider also and shared your channel to him hoping that he takes the time to watch and learn from you also. Cheers Mate from Australia..

Your welcome.. And to add also in agreement with your comment in this video is that mountain riders are far advanced in skill than open flat riders.. Give me a mountain full of twists and turns and hairpin decreasing radius turns before an open flat straight ride any day.. I'm loving the challenge of conquering cornering under full control and pace.. So much looking forward to a track day with a mate who is an advanced rider trainer.. At the age of 51 I think I'm going through a mid life crisis, still don't understand where the crisis is but loving life and motorcycles.. Keep up the great work mate. Cheers...

Awesome stuff once again sir! I haven't really started tearing up the twisties yet, so I normally wouldn't stop to watch this kinda video (all 40 mins of it, btw!), but I just love the way you explain things. You seem to be getting more firm in your convictions (hence the increased use of the "d"word, lol!). Perhaps from all the naysayers coming out from the shadows as you increase in popularity? I just want to remind you, you have NOTHING to prove to them. The haters will hate, the doubters will doubt, but wisdom will always prevail! Your story of the up and down hill "bumpy" road that you practiced multiple times reminded me of one of my favorite quotes made by Bruce Lee: "I don't fear the man that has practiced 10,000 kicks. I fear the man that has practiced one kick 10,000 times"! Stay blessed bro...

This is great as always. Good points! One thing to add from my experience is if you are new at riding and following a more advanced rider (a typical situation) through windy turns, it’s not enough to simply go the same speed and tell yourself it’s safe to handle that turn like the more experienced rider is. Simply because they may have better line selection, vision, etc which is not as obvious to the follower. Always be your own rider such that ALL those tips are in check. So basically don’t use the leaders speed as a measure of you being at a safe speed. Your speed is relative to all your other experience(s).

Great topic... Great advice... The engine braking on my bike is so strong, I was really getting into the habit of using the brakes only in the final part of a stop... a really bad and dangerous habit! I could be rolling along and realize that I'd forgotten how to stop the bike! Downhill has been pretty terrifying. I was beginning to figure this out, and this video just hammered it home. Forced deceleration from 70 MPH needs to become natural behavior, and engine braking can keep you from leaning that. Thanks!!

When I started riding, a friend told me to not use the front brake when going down hill. This statement and others showed me he didn't know how to ride as well as he claimed. Having a steep down inclined driveway, I either have to slow to a near stop or stop completely before pulling out onto the road. I primarily use the front brake. Most of the weight is on the front tire and so if applied correctly, the front brake works just fine. Since my friend still doesn't think I know anything, I'll need to share this video in the hope he will understand braking and put in some practice.

I agree about uphill feeling easier because of gravity basically being auto-brakes when you ease off the throttle. The slowing effect also doesn't really mess with your bike's geometry, the way folks might be used to their front brakes doing. If your local twisties are steep enough, turn the bike off and ride down the hill in neutral. removing throttle management from the equation lets you just focus on your braking, is good practice.

I was shit scared of using front brake until my rear brake went and I was forced to use only the front for like 2-3 weeks. Think I underestimated how safe progressive braking really is. It's quite impressive how much braking force the front tire can handle without locking up the wheel as long as it is applied smoothly. After rear brake fixed and increased confidence in front brake, my minimum stopping distance has become much shorter and it has also improved my slow speed control as I did not have a back brake to help with slow maneuvers for some time. I would recommend many riders to try riding handicapped because your performance will increase dramatically once you have all your tools back.

People don't use the front brake 😂 oh dear! One day it would be cool to have a chat, see the differences between UK and US riders and how our styles differ. On this weekends ride I am going to try and find somewhere with some hills and nice turns. Take it slow and see what level I am at when it comes to down hill turns. Thanks for the tips as I can't say I'm great on downhill turns. Keep going dude. These videos are different to everyone elses I have seen on RU-vid and help they those newbies or those guys who realise they can improve (I like to think I am a bit in the middle of the groups 3 years in). Ignore the idiots and keep going, the majority of us will take any information we can use to improve ourselves.

Hey Ryan, I am hoping to do a driving test in UK next summer and the area (East Sussex) has lots of steep hills and narrow, winding roads. I bought a dead beat cruiser to learn to drive and was pretty nervous going downhill. (Half of the time the bike couldn't get up those hills, definitely not from standstill.) Actually I was nervous driving on flat roads as well (I don't know the roads, it was fun getting lost.) because of the zero visibility, sharp bends and road hardly wide enough for a standard family car. You know what I'm talking about.... My question is, how slowly can I drive on those roads without failing the driving test? Assuming there are no speed signs the speed limit is 60 mph.

Hey mate! I can't wait to go downhill on my gixxer 150cc. Hard braking and downshifting 3 gears in a row with bilipping the throttle is awesome. Believe me I do seamless downshifts with correct synchronization of clutch and throttle bilipping. I also trail brake and this is awesome to do. I highly recommend starting on a small displacement bike and master your skills there & enjoy 90% of riding time as well. Thanks man for everything you are making.

I just went from an 850 to a 125 then back up to a 600 and I got a ridiculous amount out of learning from the LAMS (Australian learner legal) CBR in between the non-LAMS beasts because of how much more I was willing to push it. There's something about knowing you can physically muscle the bike back into the position you want that makes it easier to push to its extremes compared to a dauntingly heavy monster.

As a person who has come back into motorcycling after possibly 20 years, I found this advice extremely useful because I was finding it difficult to master the downhill technique. You would be amazed as to how much you have forgotten about how to ride safely and correctly. In years gone by I did consider myself to be a fairly accomplished rider . Practice makes perfect.

Unless you keep taking higher level courses, you’re just repeating the basic techniques you 1st learned. Practice makes permanent, perfect practice makes perfect. You could be good at doing the wrong things. I see a lot of riders like that.

Now imagine this, my school drive instructor (has a Hayabusa) was arguing with me based on my statement: I usually use the front break. Wish I had gotten? into RU-vid 7 years ago and and I probably would have not have done a high side about 30 mph. Up hill in a sharp blind turn. It's amazing how much goes through your head between leaving the seat and hitting the ground the first time. Wasn't hurt but really embarrassed. I tell this story to try to help others to REALLY learn how to take turns. I will be getting back on in the next few months weather permitting after several years off. Starting from the basics slowly and working my way up.

Hi! This is my first comment on RU-vid. I must say that this is one of the best motorcycle safety/training channels on RU-vid. Great work. Now as to up/down hills. For the last year I've been riding around Arkansas on a 125cc scooter. The hills are very steep, and the roads very twisty. Going uphill is sometimes a slow process. But because a scooter has a CVT there is NO engine braking! You must learn to use the brakes! It would be nice for you to do MotoJitsu demonstration using various scooters. The large scooters are just motorcycles with a CVT, so no clutch. I use the back brake, and feather it when doing my practice and it works sort of like a clutch. What do you think?

Thanks! I will if I ever meet someone willing to let me ride their scooter!

I'd add try not to coast (press clutch, disengage engine) while going downhill to prevent traction loss. As you said, just use brakes, only (briefly) clutch to change gears before entering the curve.

@@MotoJitsu Wouldn't confirm that totally - however, you are covering the really important techniques and you are prioritizing the right things. Other Riders/Tubers who started out riding as youngsters are capable drivers but they cannot explain what they are doing, despite the fact they have 1000s of hours driving experience. Considering this your vids are excellent plus you are working topics out to the max.

I've watched a lot of other people's videos...most have basic level of skill, knowledge, and riding ability, which in turn reflect in their videos. Great tips for downhill. We ride the mountain twisties in Colorado. Going up is always fun, coming down is awful, especially on a tight bend at 8mph. (Coming down Hwy 105 on Mount Evans is my nemesis). I’ll work on braking to gain better downhill control. Thanks!

Love your videos Eddie. Great info for everyone. Managing down hills is important and requires practice and knowledge. When I got my CDL, driving in the mountains petrified me. Taking an 80,000 pound truck down a 7% grade was nerve wrecking when I started. In that case it also came down to learning how to break properly and having your speed right before you start down. Keep up the good work. Semper Fi.
