In today's video we take a look at "Investing in Pokemon."
This has been a hot button in the community over the past couple of years with hobbyists falling on both sides of the coin on whether they agree with it or not. The strategy behind "investing" in collectibles has proven to be a very lucrative one over the past few years, but much of it was driven due to a very significant event that impacted things. Is "Investing in Pokemon Cards" still a viable option when it comes to booster boxes? Let's talk about it!

Who cares if it stayed flat all year. Its called investing for a reason. It takes time. Not every set will take off over night. Ill hold my 35 sealed boosters with my diamond hands.

If that’s your approach that’s great. Flat movement during a down market is also great. This wasn’t a video about Pokemon sealed being a “bad investment”. This was an overview of where the market is based off of context for people to form their own opinions and decisions. Not relying on the ideology of 10xing an investment because someone told them to. It sounds like you have the right mindset, sadly many others don’t share that approach of holding long term because they were influenced by the approach of others.

I always buy two booster boxes when preorders start. One to open, one for the sealed collection. After about a two years of collecting and ripping packs I’m more proud of my sealed collection than I am my singles collection 😂 I wish I could just stop ripping packs and just keep sealed but I can’t stop ripping packs 😂

I think investing in sealed Pokémon product, while it will always retain its value and will likely go up due to less sealed product being available, never assume it’s going to skyrocket. Also, with any other investment, if you plan on turning a profit then you should put it in a closet and forget it for at least 10 years and then reevaluate.

@@Pokebino_tcg Right, that's the way to go. I collect booster boxes and specialty sets. But my favorite sealed to collect are the Theme/Structure decks. All of my “investment” sealed product is stuff that if it all went to 0 I would still absolutely love to open it with my kids when they’re older. If it goes up, cool! If it skyrockets, even better! If it stays stagnant for 30 years then I’m okay with that as well. SWSH in my personal opinion is the best era!

I think something I don’t see a lot of content creators acknowledge is that many of the kids who grew up with pokemon when it first came out are now adults with some disposable income. That interest in something that we grew up with but couldn’t afford when we were kids has dramatically shifted the market and value in pokemon product. I can’t tell you how many times 8 year old me wanted to buy 1-2 booster packs for $3 a pop and I was told “no, that’s a waste of money.” Well, now I get to waste my own money. Lol

I do believe keeping stuff sealed is still going to be a good investment down the line, but we’re definitely never getting another Logan Paul/Covid hype and SwSh has definitely brought in thousands of sealed collectors so they supply is there to meet demand I don’t need to turn $100 into $100000 but if I can turn $100 into $200 I’m happy to leave it in the cupboard for a few years and forget about it, if not then I’ve got an awesome display piece, win win 🤷‍♂️

You can invest and make money out of a lot of hobbies/collectibles. However, what people fail to realize it takes a lot of research, time, and dedication to make sure you're making the best possible decisions. Even then you may end up losing because sometimes that's just how it goes. It's not bad to have some value in physical items, but it's also good to invest in 401k's, stocks, and other options as well so if a crash does happen you're not losing out. I love pokemon and I collect the cards with the art I enjoy, if they hold their price or go up then I consider that a win. 👍

Honestly, I'm happy with my positions in pokemon booster boxes. I'm in it for mid to long term so 10-30% pullbacks in the sealed product does not worry me (and really prompts me to buy more). I'm not in it for quick flips... and over the fullness of time, if it beats 7% annual rate of return, i'm stoked.

I did most of my product buying last year and early this year for investing I’m up 20%. Currently I don’t see much I would jump on atm. Pokémon shouldn’t be your entire portfolio high interest saving accounts are pretty attractive if you want to park your money atm. An emergency fund should be in place before people start investing. If people are doing that most cases people shouldn’t have to dig into their investment pile. No expert but I would suspect market will be kinda flat for the near future. Be responsible and think about the investment strategy and risk tolerance don’t forget the EMERGENCY FUND
@monkey39128
@monkey39128 11 месяцев назад
Excellent comment. The emergency fund is so important, as is having other investments. Part of the reason these things become so expensive is because most people sell early due to unexpected life expenses. Building the foundations first is vital.

Chilling reign, lost origin, and brilliant stars are the best sets to buy right now from a price and fun stand point. They have a ton of excellent cards and you can still get the packs at a decent price. Out of all the sets battle styles is the most underrated. It has a bunch of cool cards compared to most of the sets and it's a steal at its current price. You can still find sakes and pick then up for under 100 bucks. Overall I don't buy sealed to sell later, I just buy it to have fun opening old stuff down the road. It's super hard not to binge open all the stuff though. Sometimes I think I hear the packs calling to me from the closet to open them all immediately. Is that weird?

Sealed investing is still the safest way to do so in pokemon. Historically speaking the data supports it Pick a set that’s desired with chase cards and you can’t go wrong as long as you are paying below msrp, which you can always find Don’t expect to 5x in one year. But if you are realistic and hold for 5 years + you will see significant growth Not entirely sure I agree with all your statements here Fanny

Profits are made at the buy price and not at the sell price. When investing in general, patience is key. People who want 5x+ in a matter of days or a week are just gamblers. It’s just like WallStreetBets jumping on the GameStop bandwagon. This hobby is a snail pace and getting into sealed products at the near bottom is a trade/skill when investing. Most people sell when prices are crashing and buy when prices are skyrocketing. As the great Warren Buffett says.... “buy when everyone is fearing and sell when everyone is greedy”. After all, each and everyone of us in the hobby has their own goal(s); player, collector, investor, and/or gamblers.
@Mattached

I'm glad you bring this up. It's the same with investing in anything. Don't spend money you don't have. If you have the extra money to hold onto product because you like it and want to share it with your family/kids/nephews 5-10 years that's fine but buying something to make a profit on you really need to buy low and sell high, which no one will know. The overprinting of these newer series will be around easily for years and years

loved it, and couldnt agree more. Some people think ou can just buy anything, pretty much anywhere, and make money off of it or keep very modern ssets sealed and the prices are going to double their money, in the near term, Most people cant keep thousands, tens of thousands or more , store it, for 5/10/15+ years.

People forget that these are rectangular pieces of cardboard and their final value depends on the appreciation of others and what those others are willing to spend on them. The second is investing and Danny is one hundred percent right most gurus have no idea what they are talking about I think it is pretty realistic for the most part, as long as you buy low like Danny talked about, to triple to quadruple your investment 5-10 years after a product is out of print (so 7-12 years after release.) Personally I have a dollar amount picked out for collecting and investing every month and that’s what I spend it helps me keep the importance part of this important. Buying lost origin at $130 is paying a bit too much. Buying at $115? Solid investment. Look at any booster box that hasn’t had a reprint post pandemic. Swsh base, rebel clash, fusion, chilling, all could be had at sub $90. Now none can really be had sub $120. At a minimum that’s 15-20% gains a year. Investing isn’t about making a one year return. What’s lost origin going to be in 10 years? Pre pandemic what was a sealed booster box of a 2009 set worth in 2019 compared to its release cost? Apply that to any booster box and the returns beat every stock market

Hi Danny. I see a lot of people saying that everyone is holding sealed without any facts to back up this claim. Sure there is likely to be more people holding it now but it can seem like more when you're all part of the same subs and watching the same videos. The amount that is being held will inevitably affect the market price in the future, so with your greater wealth of knowledge, what proportion would you estimate is put into storage? 1%, 2%, 3%, more?

I'd imagine a lot of people are holding sealed but most of them will sell within three years. Either because they've given up or because they need the money. The number of people who hold for 5+ years is going to be a lot smaller. This is just a guess though. I have zero evidence to back this up. 😂

But at MRSP or under, don't pay over, and enjoy collecting. In 20/30 years will I sell them all? Of course. Will I hope they are worth more? Of course. If they're not, will I care? Probably not. If Pokémon crashes, maybe I open them all and have some fun. Enjoy the hobby first!

HARD disagree on Lost Origin being a bad buy at $130. I think Lost Origin is in the top 3 best sets for the Sword and Shield era. The reason you can't compare it to something like Darkness Ablaze is because Darkness Ablaze is an absolutely trash set. In 1 year I imagine Lost Origin will be doing far better than the vast majority of other investments you could've made.

Historically speaking, the odds of a $90 booster box going to $180 which is double, in 3 to 5 years is very high and very likely. That would be a 100% return. Even if a $90 box went to $135, that would still be a 50% return. Still way better than most stock market moves. So buying lost origin at $130, there is a significant chance that it will still eventually be a $200 booster box at some point. Not in the next year, but several years. Even if it just did that, it would have been a sound investment for sure.

Im willing to wait a few years with most of what ive got. I fear COVID-esque events will become more common as germ warfare replaces conventional war. If only countries would settle things over pokemon card battles.

That would be interesting. The boxes become really expensive but everyone will be too ill to enjoy the gains. 😂 You are correct though, the world has gone nuts.

Yeah man love your honesty and actually caring enough to be honest I think your right now every person that gets a hit gets it graded asap and holds it this will make it hard for value to go up I get cards I like graded just to keep them protected and safe but not to sell I don’t even care what score they come back as long as I like the card and artwork I hope to have a full wall in my sons room 1 day that maybe he can give to his son

I dont think pokemon is going anywhere. The base expanded and may be contracting some now, but the new generation of kids is really into it. There will be ups and downs and if you are smart with your entries and exits you will do well imo!

Even IF, and thats a huge "IF" you invest in seal products, youre not likely going to see the returns that are worth it for the amount of time you hold for. People point to vintage stuff from the beginning of pokemon, but they dont understand thats the reason they are so different than anything after them. They were the first. They have that "first" era value. Anything after that, will always be the middle or older child. You cant replicate that, no matter how much time you wait.

I only keep sealed boosters, ETBs, and UPCs…I don’t have enough room to save any more sealed.

Most important part is the fact that the government gave out free money Bought a lost origin booster box for $96. Hopefully that was a good decision

I collect and play the game. Extra bulk or stuff I don't want sell it. Money I get back is to rebuy more packs. But for many people they are selling off everything. Some are droping the hobby. I've seen Digimon and OnePiece prices drop dramatically. Is so funny. And glad the non hobby players are getting out. Greed finally getting to them. I have been able to pick up amazing deals lately. Japanese cards, however, is a different story.

a Little confused why you keep saying MSRP. You could get almost all these boxes for about $85 dollars on secondary markets at one point. As an investment it will take alot of time for these to go up in value. But I think alot of people that are investing in this kind of stuff understand that already.

I do enjoy the channels that break down even if you HAD bought in, let's say a case of BB , at market low and sold them at market high 5 years later, the ROI on that - shipping fees and misc mishaps just from being a seller. I've done the math (on certain products people were scalping) and it's just not worth it. People who scalp and flip (unless it's the celebrations UPC this is the only exception IMO) your making maybe 5-10 dollars after the effort of going to stores, buying all the product out, listing, selling, shipping, hoping you don't get refunds because some collector wanted a pristine box and not one with a dent. I would be curious what a "scalpers" hourly boils down too, I bet it's LOOOW. When I think about all that non sense there is no way in hell I would "invest" in pokemon product...That is not the same thing as a "sealed collection" in my opinion. Even if you buy 1 to 2 boxes or you buy 4 Pokemon Center ETBs because you want to sell or trade them down the road for different product.

I've always felt that Pokémon sealed product investing gets caped at a certain point and most of the time not for the long term. I do believe Pokémon is too big to fail, but at a certain point there is a diminishing return because of storage space and liquidating.
