In this video we will install Berryboot to a microSD and load x3 operating systems from a single 1TB SSD. We will be installing TwisterOS, Pi OS (formerly known as Raspbian) & ubuntu. We'll discuss the setup/installation process, demonstrate each booting and review some additional features of Berryboot.

Very welcome, before you decide on BerryBoot, also see this more recent video on PINN Lite: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1Cqta4go45U.html . I prefer PINN, myself. Yes, it will create separate partitions for each of the OSes installed.

Thanks for the tutorial. This is the second one of your tutorials that I've felt confident enough to attempt. And for the second time IT WORKED! After installing and failing get the standard available Raspberry Pi OS to install I've found that only a Berryboot image can be used (Same for Ubuntu and Twister OS, etc.). I've seen the tutorials on Berryboot Convert, but it really seemed to me to be above my paygrade. Twister 2.0 just came out, any idea on when it'll be updated for Berryboot? QUESTION: How to do updates to the OS? I attempted to upgrade both Raspberry Pi OS and Ubuntu but the ugrade failed when booted thru Berryboot, and I suspect the latest full OS needs to be converted for Berryboot instead of just an upgrade, is that so? So, unable to update, until an OS is converted for Berryboot I'm stuck on an older version of an OS? Then when a Berryboot version is available I have to reinstall the entire OS as a new install? That can't be right. What am I missing? Again, THANKS!

Great news Tim, I appreciate the positive comment! I've not tried updating the latest Twister v2.0 yet, not sure when they'll have a new image in BB (SquashFS) format. But if you install the current one, I think you can update it from their update utility in Twister (I did when I first installed it with BB). When I first installed PiOS I was able to update it there as well. Not sure why there are update issues, seems like I may need to dig into that. Also looking at checking out PINN Lite which is similar to BB.

Great video. After install, does the SSD have just the ext4 for Ubuntu or did the .img get placed there as well? Feels kind of like ventoy for rPi... Also did you have a video regarding your decision to go with http vs https for your site?

Thank you, much appreciated. The .img files got placed as well. To help answer your question a little more fully, I placed an image of the structure here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi4/#SSD_Structure . My reason for going with http vs. https was the cost from my hosting company, they wanted to charge an arm and a leg for an SSL cert and my channel is too small to fund the added expense.

@@WagnersTechTalk Wow that's really cool and quite an advanced approach to minimal storage isolation between OS. Impressive... I wonder if you could theoretically create another SSD partition for documents and share it between OSes. It seems sometimes these tools virtualize the storage in a way which that isn't possible. Thanks for the thorough perspective...

@@poweredbywill2216 Most likely could create a separate partition for sharing across OSs. It would likely need to be done before formatting the SSD (just a hunch). Might be something interesting to try in the future for sure.

So once you select SSD as a destination for OS installations, does it mash them all together in the same partition on SSD? I would love to have each OS on a separate partition.

Pardon me for asking, since I don’t know much about raspberry pi but want to learn. First question, how did you format your 128gb to fat 32? And second question I’m currently using recalbox, is it possible to add another OS like Pi OS

Good questions, no worries. To format the card in FAT32, I used Raspberry Pi Imager here: www.raspberrypi.com/software/ . Since this video, I also created another video that you may prefer on PINN Lite : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1Cqta4go45U.html It's actually a bit easier in PINN Lite as you can easily select all the operating systems you want to install upfront. However, keep in mind once set it can't be changed easily. Recalbox is one of the options. Hope this is helpful!

Great video! Not sure if this is covered in other questions and maybe I wasn't connecting the context. I have multiple pre-built images of Retropie and Batocera, each one containing their own games and assets. I would like to have all of these images on a single external drive and have the option to choose which one I would like to boot from. Can I do that using these steps?

Thank you Chris! First, I've not tried importing an existing image into BB. Primarily because the image must exist in the Squash FS which is a bit inconvenient for an existing image (you'll have to run it through a series of conversions). Another option you may want to consider is PINN Lite, video here if needed: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1Cqta4go45U.html I've not tried importing an existing image with it personally, but if it is possible it would likely be easier than BB. Hope some of this is helpful to you!

Cheers man. The real question is , how to move the berryboot to an SSD partition, similar to how GRUB works. Get rid of the SDCARD and be able to boot multiple OSes directly from the SSD.

I am confused whether to use BerryBoot or PINN - do you know why people choose one over the other?

That's a good question, the two are similar. With PINN you have more available installation options as opposed to BerryBoot. Also, for some OSes it can be hard to find a SquashFS image (needed by BerryBoot) to install it. Lately I tend to use PINN mostly but appreciate that we have two very good options. Funny. I was *just* researching this 30min before this was uploaded. I was curious if I could run 2 retro gaming OSes. I really like the polish of recalbox (I don't care for being kicked to DOS like menus in retropie), but given the issues with Nespi4 case and there's no Steamlink available, I'll just rebuild retropie on an SSD. Maybe use a microsd to play with Recalbox.

It should work, I've been researching a follow-up to this video which I plan to cover after the ArgonOne M.2 video. Basically, the image used will need to be in the squashFS format. There is a utility called BerryConverter (Link: github.com/Kingo71/BerryConverter ) that should allow taking an existing Recalbox/RetroPie image and put it int he SquashFS format so it can be easily loaded in BerryBoot.

I was basically asking the same question. Are you looking to do this with separate copies of your games and related media for each OS, or pull them from a central location using whatever OS you choose?

Hi. I installed RPI OS onto the SSD, but I wanted to also have another OS on the SD card. I don't mind using the SD card for this. Since all the boot files are on the SD card, could we change the destination drive for the second OS to the SD card. The final setup would look like: SD card (boot files + OS1) SSD (OS2)

I may be wrong, but I think all OSes would need to be installed to the SSD per this: www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot I don't think you can mix and match them.

@@WagnersTechTalk You're right. After much research I ended up installing two separate OSs on each drive, and selecting USB boot as the priority. Whenever I just want to game, I'll turn the usb off so the SD gets picked up. Better than nothing I guess. There isn't a GRUB-like tool for the Raspberry yet I'm afraid.

There is a size limit to the squashfs file system used by BerryBoot and no arcadepunks images are available for download in this way. Another option might be PINN Lite, however I don't use pre-made images and instead create my own (I've had a lot of issues with them in the past). You might want to search reddit for something that might help.

Hi, thanks for the video. I tried to add an OS image from USB but Berryboot tells me I have to insert a drive. I'm on Windows 10 and tried with a USB stick and a portable SSD I have. Do you know if there's anything more I need to do on the drive side ? Thank you !

The USB stick needs to be formatted as FAT32, that's likely why it didn't see it (not just the boot microSD but the thumb drive with the OS to install). You'll also want to use the images from here: berryboot.alexgoldcheidt.com/images as they are all already in the SquashFS file format (needed by BerryBoot). Let me know if that helps!

Very welcome. Unfortunately, I haven't yet had time to fully test this and get it working but my notes that "may work" (perhaps with some minor changes) are here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi4/#Experimental I tried one image but I think it was me who did something wrong. Once I get it working, these steps will get updated and show some success with various images at that point. Had a rough week this week (stomach bug), but better now so haven't gotten back to it yet.

I have followd this to a tee but Berryboot images keep crashing on my Pi 4? I have install the images on external ssd as well as the sd card and get the same results. Any ideas?

Thanks.. I actuallly watched it this am. I successfully was able to install and boot several images from my ssd drive flawlessy. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Too bad Pinn-Lite doesn't allow you to incrementally add OS images one at a time.

When trying to add OS to my Raspberry Pi 4 from my USB, berryBoot does not read my USB, I attempted many times in 2.0 and 3.0 and nothing it shows as "No media found" and instructs me to add a USB stick like if I don't have it connected. I have several OS images in the USB. I would appreciate the assistance.

Hi Carlos, make sure the USB stick is formatted as FAT32. If it's not, you can use DiskGenius to reformat it. Of course, make sure you backup your images that you've copied to your computer, then format the USB stick as Fat32 and copy them back. This should do it.

Hi @@WagnersTechTalk. In order to transfer large OS images to a USB stick, you have to do it as NTFS because you can't as FAT32. As suggested, I attempted to cmd adm. as format /FS:FAT32 /Q and it didn't work. Can you format a NTFS back to FAT32?

I also got that with multiple OS, and I also could not overclock, you restart and it would resort back, also could not update anything. So I gave up and used PINN instead.

You can take out the sd Card once You have installed all the OSs?

I really want to have Fruitbox as an option in multiboot but I tried and it wouldn't work, 😭, Should be able to have an O.S. or two, fruitbox, plex and retropie. That would make me happy. Great video, thanks for your efforts.

Not sure if it supports what you're looking for, but making you aware of it.

@@WagnersTechTalk Fruitbox is a jukebox software that only works on the Pi3 not Pi4's I believe, it is very nice. Thanks for the info about the other boot util, fruitbox doesn't work with BerryBoot because the image isn't SquashFS format.

I'm not aware of an existing Win10 Arm image in squashFS format. IF an image exists, it may work but I've not seen/tried it.

This is good info, thank you. I've been preparing for a video for the ArgonOne M.2 case and used that with BerryBoot for testing. It's possible that BB+NESPi 4 is having a similar issue as recalbox (noted here: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/#Booting_from_SSD ). If I figure something out I'll reply back here, but won't be able to check it out until my new SSD arrives.

Hello, I managed to boot Ubuntu, (took the RPi out of the NESPi box... lol) but when I tried to add the twister os, it kept saying please insert the thumb drive to upload.. the thumb drive was already inserted.. I tried all 4 ports and got the same message.. help!!
