He may not be the Godfather, but Bootsy Collins sits at the centre of funk’s engine room. First with James Brown, then with Parliament-Funkadelic, his were the basslines that fueled the grooves that have kept modern music bumping. From Cincinnati to stages worldwide, Collins embraced the potential of the music he was a part of and in the process became one of funk’s best-known and loved representatives.
In this lecture at the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy, he retraces his early steps, recalls the JB’s military discipline, the liberation of P-funk and explains why Jimi Hendrix was the inspiration for it all.

One of the other reasons why P-Funk got on that psychedelic trip was because at heart, George Clonton was a big old hippie. If he heard there was a Grateful Dead concert anywhere near him, after the Funkadelic, Parliament performances he would stroll on over to the concerts and hang out.

Bootsty is an incredible communicator. It’s like listening to Tommy Tedesco, Hal Blaine and the many others that have appeared here. When these events were happening with “Bootsy” there was no internet, bloggers/publicists reporting what was happening daily with the bands and production the Road, Club and studio. So these interviews are like “ Story Time With Uncle Bootsy”.. they are interesting, raw and truthful and so much fun to listen to. But they are Funk History .

Watching this dull interviewer and boring audience in the presence of a funk legend was like watching paint dry. Geeez!!!! I grew up in the 1970's and had the pleasure of going to a Parliament Funkadelic concert featuring Bootsie while in college. Pure joy!!! Bootisie, Star Child, the Brides of Funkenstein and of course Dr. Funkenstein himself were all onstage. Magical!!!!
