My last dog was a rescued Border Collie pup. He was the best dog I have ever had; highly intelligent, loyal, intuitive and deeply loving. That said he needed at least three hours of exercise a day, running free and Frisbee ( he was brilliant at it). I wouldn't recommend a BC unless you are prepared to put a lot of work into them but if you do, they are diamonds.

I live in the US. I used to foster dogs and the one I ended up adopting was a rescue border collie. She was puppy milled. She didn't have any drive to herd and was so small nome of her babies made it (partly due to neglect and not providing proper nutrients to a pregnant dog). They were planning on putting her down when i got the call from one of the family members and she was brought to me. When I first got her she was so skinny and small. I almost thought she was a puppy or a little coyote. She had never seen the outside of a cage. Poor girl didn't even know what grass felt like until we let her into her new yard. She will watch the live stock guardian dogs do their job and be perfectly content resting on the porch spending time resting for the first time in the past 5 years of her life. I've had her for about 2 years now. Best companion I've ever had, incredibly smart, oddly well behaved and well mannered on her own. She finally got the confidence to be who she needed to be. I'm just glad I got to give her the chance to be a dog and live life running and playing and working that big brain of hers with tricks and commands, she's always eager to learn and will even tell me when it's time to go practice training. Best decision I ever made adopting her.😊

Many years ago, my brother got a Border Collie -- while he lived in a rural area, he did not have work for the dog to do, and just as you described, it was not a happy situation for either the dog or my brother. I also heard a shepherd (here in the U.S.) talking about how bored Border Collies got if they were just pets.They're brilliant and wonderful but not built for being at home all day.

Love Sean's Scottish accent and his willingness to share his life with us. This is a very interesting look into a different lifestyle, which is so wholesome and good too. Love to Sean and his amazing dogs !❤❤❤❤

Great video Sean!!! I’ve owned 4 dogs over 30 years and we’ve had a BC for the past 7 years and he’s like no other breed!!! Easy to train, singular loyalty, only requires brushing and very entertaining! A day doesn’t go by when he doesn’t make us laugh!! The first year of puppyhood was challenging but once we figured it out, it came together. Our schedules allow us to give him mental stimulation 3 times a day plus a walk! You’re very right when you said that “mental stimulation leads to exercise” not sure how but it does! We are an active outdoor family (especially winter) so he is a perfect fit! They love meeting new people but they also want to chase cars, trucks and buses so off leash on streets is forbidden! Thanks again for all your videos!❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦

I'm retired and have 2 BC sisters that are about 3 now. I've also got a few old brush goats they help me with. Their favorite outdoor activity is watching the goats through the fence. I taught one to open the door because I was constantly needing to let a dog in or out as I have other pets too. She is the doggy doorman now and is happy to do it. I do need to keep the door locked if I don't want them let in or out for some reason. I have 2 grandkids living with me and I taught the dogs to go get them up before school. The boys wake up happier when the dogs get them up. My husband died a couple years ago and after his obituary came out people started prowling around and stealing things. The dogs sleep inside and once in the middle of the night a man actually came in the backdoor. The collies were almost a year old and had both been spayed the day before so they were on drugs and wearing cones that night. They turned into a couple Cujo clones and ran that man out and back over the fence in a flash. They sounded so vicious I was even kinda scared of them. My over all favorite thing about them is their ability to get along with other animals. I've never had any problem with them trying to chase or hurt the chickens or cats or anything. We have one chicken that will come on the porch and eat some dog food at feeding time and the collies sit and wait until the hens done. It's funny because they always look guilty while the chicken eats like maybe they think they should do something about it but they don't know what to do. I've been around various types of collies my entire life and wouldn't want to ever be without one. Like all collies, border collies are great.

My Border Collies worked as search and rescue dogs - they were wonderful and 2 years ago we actually found and rescued a missing person. I live in the country and they got/get lots of exercise as well. Working collies are happy collies. They are so easy to train and eager to work.

This is a very useful, informative video about Border Collies. Everything you mentioned about the nature, behavior and health of Border Collies is very accurate, in my experience. Although I didn’t have a situation for my Border Collies to work as a true working dog, herding sheep/goats; I did live in an area and had a job where I could utilize the energy, intelligence and behavior of my Border Collies. I worked in Forestry, so we were out everyday, in all weathers. My dogs loved herding deer, however, which did cause some trouble bc they would take off for a couple of hours. This occurred when they were still puppies, and I was less knowledgeable about Border Collies. Eventually I learned how to prevent this behavior the more I understood the breed. I trained them better and gave them different stimulating situations before I took them out on the hours long walks through the protected forests. I also had German Shepherds. These two breeds worked well together, for me. The only point I want to mention, bc of my circumstances, I bred my females once and then neutered them. I did not keep male dogs at that time. ❤️🐕🐕‍🦺❤️

Beautiful dogs - we had a BC when I was a child. She had a job alright, she was looking after me. She was with me throughout my childhood - hardly ever left my side. I was heartbroken when she died aged 14 when I was thirteen. Best girl. I've had dogs since and love all dogs but she was a special girl, no mistake.

Such an important message: "These are dogs that need mental activity." ❤

Keep talking all you want...I learned a lot from this one. I am so appreciative of you, unlike some dog-related channels, not turning the dogs into character actors and dressing them up and making them "talk". They can just be what they are, and that is a beautiful thing. And I also appreciate the videos that show me more of Scotland and the lovely countryside you live in. One day I hope to cross the Atlantic to visit the England and now how Scotland as a destination as well. How about a bit more about the Hebridean sheep? Not a breed common in the US I don't think.

My border collie mix gets 4+ hours of exercise a day with at least 1.5 hours of pure RUNNING (after a ball, agility courses, frisbee etc). We also do hiking, swimming and homemade puzzles with him. He’s absolutely amazing, so smart & intuitive. But I can see how some people wouldn’t be a good fit for a border collie since they need so much mental and physical exercise.

That was really interesting, I have an 8 yo border collie mix (with German shepherd) he's the best dog ever but it took me some time to learn how to properly take care of him. I totally agree with you that border collies are not for everyone, they are time consuming and need a lot of care, but if you do commit, they are the best breed I know.

Great video, I love your pups, though it makes me miss my boys. I have had three fabulous BC boys and miss them everyday. Once you look into a Boders eyes you're hooked. I always had my guys with retrievers, it's a great mix. Borders keep the Labbies and Goldies moving and the retrievers keep the Borders occupied. I had one pup Zeke who was fabulous at finding and gently holding down an indoor cat Nittany that used to escape all the time. She had a medical issue and wasn't allowed out. They were best buds. I used to think it was a game they invented.😂

Fantastic video coming from the angle of border collies not being suitable for everyone and what it takes to look after them. It breaks my heart to see people with border collies who have no understanding of their needs.

I believe you are spot on regarding the intelligence and athleticism of border collies. Your reluctance toward neutering your working dogs makes sense when considering possible behavioral changes. Also, none of your three current dogs will live forever, and may need to retire as they become more senior. If you're satisfied with the physical condition, mental and emotional stability, and working viability of your dogs, it makes sense to breed their replacement(s) as necessary. Since Storm is Kate's daughter and Echo is Storm's son, you have already figured this out. Bravo! I agree border collies are not simple companion dogs. My observation is that a bored border collie is a neurotic border collie. They need both exercise and a JOB. For the pet, the job could be agility competition, or any kind of exercise that stimulates their mind. Congratulations on your three working dogs. You have trained them well. They are obviously well adjusted mentally and emotionally. And they LOVE you. That in and of itself speaks volumes.

My grandfather raised border collies when I was a small child . He had a dairy farm and used them to manage his cattle . He had a great dog named Lady . Lady was in the shed having pups when the other dogs went to bring the cows up for milking. She had already given birth to 3 pups but bolted out the door and helped bring the cows to the barn , then she came back to the shed and had 4 more pups ! Now there’s a dog dedicated to its job !

What's interesting about your approach to these videos, and I think attracts people, is that you're not coming at it from an entertainment perspective so much as a teaching one. And that's a refreshing difference from all the glowing "here are my beautiful/funny/happy/shiny dogs". Showing us what life is really like for people in such a beautiful, rural environment, answering questions, explaining how the farm works... That's the good stuff. :-) Keep it up please.

When I was a teenage, we got a puppy for my dad for Father’s Day. We named her Duchess. She was a mix Border Collie and Sheltie. Her coat looked like Lassie’s, a beautiful “butterscotch” with white. She was a gorgeous dog, sweet disposition, definitely smart and wanting to please. Though she wasn’t run a lot or given a lot of deliberate mental stimulation, we were a family of 7, so there were always several of us, if not all of us, in and out of the house, and in general, a lot of activity going on. She lived for 14 years. I am now 74 years old, and I still remember this darling family pet whom we all deeply loved. Thank you for this video and for giving people a “heads up” on understanding what a Border Collie needs most to be a happy, healthy dog.

I’ve admired border collies since the first time I saw one in a frisbee competition, lol, but I’m waaaay too lazy to ever contemplate getting one as a pet. Kudos to you & your dogs, the working relationship between you is marvelous to see.

Border Collies are smarter than most people I know. I've had to directly talk numerous people out of getting one because their lifestyle and ability to train and manage a dog of that intelligence wouldn't be practical for the dog. Thank you SOOOOO much for this video.

Interesting and a really important video. Border collies particularly respond best to being farm dogs but of course no dog does well being left on its own all day not just border collies. They are also very intense dogs and expect a lot from you and I don’t doubt that if you are able to give them what they need, as an owner it must be lovely or even the best thing in the world to reap those rewards as well.

Great video, and just wanting to echo the importance of mental stimulation for our BC. I had previous experience with Australian Shepards (despite the name an American breed), which are also known as smart and high energy, so I thought BC would be similar. No. Like most dogs an Aussie is perfectly happy to poke around in the yard with you, keep itself busy but essentially just be companionable. Our BC wants to do something *with you*. It wants to work or play by interacting with you. And to add to this, mental work is much more tiring (and satisfying) than just physical activity. 15-20 minutes of working through commands (we call it ‘school’), doing puzzles, hunting for hidden toys, is as tiring as a 2 mile walk. And of course mental + physical is the best. As pets they are absolutely fantastic members of the family-love ours to pieces. Sweet, loyal, entertaining. But it is like having a 6 year old, wanting to do this or that, go to the park, ask you ‘why’, play games, interact with you. People think the energy is just walking & running, but it is the mental interaction that makes them so special and time consuming. Unless you are training for marathons you won’t out-walk a BC. They are so smart they really crave mental stimulation and doing something with you, so if you don’t have sheep you need to have a set of ‘jobs’ (games) for them: frisbee with commands, agility, indoor and outdoor games, etc.

My last dog was a Border. She was the best dog I ever had. We just lost her, at the age of 14 (a mass on her liver), last year. We'd spend every day, 2-3 hours, at the dog park. She loved agility tracks, and frisbee. When we would go places where we couldn't take her, we'd take her to day care, where they had a treadmill and an agility track for her. She absolutely loved it. Of course, there were those times where she just didn't feel like doing anything, and was a great couch companion. Definitely not for someone that isn't ready for a full-time commitment, but if you are willing, they will be the best dog you've ever had.

Do another one! More talking about the breed! I had an Australian shepherd. Was my first dog as an adult. I worked all day and had her in a crate. It was very sad to come home to her having gone to the bathroom in her crate. Eventually I realized I wasn’t being responsible or giving her a great life and gave her to my sister who had chickens and a big yard to run free. She’s much happier and almost 15 years old now.

I had a Border Collie, she was my Soul mate, and looked like "Old Hamp" from the face, and similar to Storm, only a little smaller and she was very smart and we could communicate a lot with the eyes, and she reacted very well to hand movements. Simply great. I was very active with my dog and travelled a lot, about 4 to 5 hours a day hiking in the countryside - and she could do a lot of tricks. Her name was Kimi, Unfortunately, someone in the neighbourhood poisoned her. I miss her so much, that happened 2 years ago. She lives on in my heart. R.I.P. I truly wish, Sean, that this video had been available 12 years ago! I grew up with a Border Collie, and love the breed. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of telling my husband I would love to have another one, after my previous dog passed away. We ended up with a Blue Heeler cross puppy, who was definitely my husbands dog, even though I trained him. Then, when he was about 15 months old, I saw a Border Collie/Rat Terrier puppy on the local humane society website. She was 9 months old. I told him the two were more than enough to deal with (both extremely high energy) and I didn't want another dog. When these two were 2 years and 18 months respectively, he came across a farm advertising Border Collie puppies. I told him no, and explained much of what you did. If this video had been available to show him, maybe he would have listened! At the time, we were both working full time, as well as looking after my father, who was in his 90s, and still keeping up with the young dogs we already had. He didn't listen. So, now, we have a 12 year-old Border Collie who has not been properly trained, and is difficult, to say the least. Yes, she has found her own job, telling me when my husband's PTSD is acting up! She has also eaten a couch, love seat and chair (full set), another couch, another chair, and is working on her third chair. She is very loving and otherwise sweet, unless she sees another dog (one thing I insisted on was socializing her when she was little, but it didn't take - she had aggressive tendencies even as a puppy), which makes taking her for walks problematic. Now that she's 12, she's mellowing a bit, but if ever a dog could be used as a warning, she's it (even as Border Collies go, mine is unusually hyper-sensitive to everything). She still poops furniture! Make no mistake, I do love her, and have always tried to make sure she gets enough exercise and stimulation. Those brain games for dogs are a total waste of time, by the way! What worries me most is the number of videos currently on You Tube telling people the Border Collie is suitable for first time owners, without making any effort to emphasize just how high energy and sensitive these dogs are.

Great information for those considering a border collies. I have told people that have asked me, "if you want a border collie as a pet, you need to consider how much time you would have for a human toddler" . I hope people take your good advice. Ours have been rescues that came from situations where they were not exercised or working so had become bored and restless. The girl (almost 18 yrs old) we have now was a pet we rescued. She has very little desire to herd anything other than me with her cold nose on the back of my knee in the morning. She does act like a toddler especially when I won't let her follow me into the loo. (whining and paws reaching under the door)

BC’s are the most loyal and intelligent dogs I’ve ever had. Mine have purely been pets and the first one I had lived until he was 19. I’ve commented previously about him. My current boy has been with me now for 7 years and was 14 months when I got him. He had not been treated well previously and had serious behavioral issues like separation anxiety and basic discipline and that’s because he was mostly ignored. I’m fortunate I have all my time with him and now he is 8 years old he knows my every move before I do. He is cheeky and still pushes my buttons but I’ll have it no other way. He’s the absolute most precious thing in my life and he came along at a point I was struggling very badly. Without him I doubt I’d still be around. I was struggling with serious pain and depression and he turned all that around. I owe him my life and he owes me his. He’s very much my assistance dog and my only issue now is worrying about losing him. I know how it felt last time but this will be much worse. It’s my greatest fear.

Where do you get your new dogs to replace your ageing dogs and what is that selection process? _______ Your lecture was loaded with great information. I'm of the opinion a BC would probably never be happy as a house pet or limited to a city. environment.

Fantastic video. I’ve had border collies for pets for the last 45 years and I always tell people who ask not to get them as a pet. Most people don’t know what they’re dealing with. But I’ve always found it relatively straightforward to give them the stimulation and exercise they need. Most of mine were trained to catch frisbee, the one we have now does frisbee and balls. You have to be careful because they can become quite OCD about it. But by breaking it up and training them well and working them through their paces,they get enough mental stimulation and exercise to be healthy and happy. They’re not as athletic as working dogs, of course, but they’ve all been great dogs and have lived healthy active lives up to about 14. I can’t imagine having anything but a border collie. Once you know the breed no other kind of dog comes close.

Great video, Sean. We have a border collie/papillon mix. I was disabled and my husband worked long hours, Unfortunately depression set in. We adopted our dog to keep meccompany. He was about 1 year old, and he's 13 now. Thank goodness I could be home with him all day and spend time with him. I would take him to the dog park, and he would herd the other dogs and get them running in a huge circle. I don't think people realize how fast these dogs can run, but it's a beautiful sight. Thank you for sharing some great information and explaining about working dogs vs pet's. ❤❤❤

Good one,i wish more people would do the right research, its so sad to see one over weight, with mental behavior problems, and owners that don't let them run free because they have no control. Good advice,i try to explain what border collies are like to other dog owners but i can see them glaze over and dismiss me. Fantastic dogs obedient faithful good fun and the best friend you can have. If you understand them so that you know how to get them to understand you.

You did a good job on the spaying question! In addition, a working dog is basically capital for the aims of what you train a dog for, whether that's herding or search&rescue or guiding the blind. So in a vulgar sense, spaying/neutering a proven working dog is literally counterproductive.

I guess the issue with neutering is you’re not walking your dogs in busy parks or hills with owners you don’t know so much! That makes it much easier for ‘accidents’ to happen & irresponsible/unwanted breeding is bad. I would always get my pets neutered as I never intend to breed but can see how it is different for working dogs.

Sean, I’ve been to England for 14 days of travel with an English man friend, but.. I’ve never been to Bonnie Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Please allow me to come visit and help you for a few days, maybe feeding and brushing. I was gifted a beautiful 4 months old purebred Collie from two working parents in California in the green, green hills of East Bay behind the University of California at Berkeley. It was an amazing story. The rest I’ll tell you in person around the campfire 🔥. I’ve got at least 20 stories that people like to hear because I’m an adventurous soul who only goes to countries WITH or to visit a native. I speak important phrases in at least ten languages and that includes canines and parrots. Animals like me. Young children like me. I’m without strong family ties and can go wherever I wish. I got my dog as a rescue..he was my love for 17 years. We did everything together. He came on the road to work with me. We ran miles together in the woods and beach. He pointed out all the bad boyfriends I had. He was the most intuitive, smart and most handsome boy❤

We've got a seven year old rescue dog called Hughie. His favourite toy is a tennis ball!

Great and engaging presentation! I had a border collie as a pet and he was a wonderful member of the family! A lot of work to be sure to keep him active. The one thing I would take exception to is the statement that flash frozen foods lose all their nutrients. The opposite is true. Flash freezing actually preserves most nutrients in foods.

Your dogs are beautiful & so well taken care of. There was a best seller in the early 1980's- on the history of dog breeds. The book emphasized that the border collie was one of the 1st domestically tamed dog breeds & the smartest breed to boot! That book was spot on!!

As someone who has worked in the veterinary field, I thank you so much for this. Too many people get dogs without researching the breed and wonder why they have issues later. Border collies are definitely a great breed if you have the time and energy to do what is needed. I applaud you for educating your audience on border collie basics!

My collie Floss was a failed sheepdog despite her mum being a very good worker and worth a lot of money. Floss was too timid but made a fabulous pet, incredibly affectionate. I miss her.

Man I miss my Daisy Girl. She was only a year old when she was unalived when she went out to pee. She damn near trained herself and was glued to my side. Someday ill get another I hope. She was the only Border Collie that didnt play ball. She was very chill. Loved cuddling on the couch and chasing our other dogs

My BC was almost dead before she was 1 year old. She was diagnosed with hypopapathyroidism and given calcium supplements by a small town vet that saved her life. She did well on calcium for about 9-10 years until she started needing other meds for health and comfort. She was on a bunch by the end. She fought for 12.5 years. She loved life like a goddamn force of nature or maybe a damn angel? Having a border collie in my opinion just is unlike any other dog breed I’ve dealt with except maybe the Kelpie and Mcnab dogs. But those are treasures all their own anyways.

My experience with my BC was just as Sean said. Poppy, my collie left our family on 8th January 2024 after 13 years of love, laughter and joy leaving a huge hole in our hearts and our lives. Poppy, you were one in a million, thank you for being one of the family.

Thanks for sharing. Live to learn about dogs. I live on a dense suburb, not 10 miles from the White House in the US. There was a woman who had three border collies that she exercised using her bicycle. She had them trained to sprint ahead and stop at every street corner and wait for her signal before they stepped into the street. They would do the intense border collie stare and crouch down waiting. Such smart, amazingly well trained dogs. (She also had a place in the country and kept sheep for them).
