So let me get this straight we get Granny Lilith, English Teacher Tannis, 5'3 Roland, Regular Tina, Decent Krieg and ClapBlack ?

My favorite mission in borderlands was picking Tannis and Lilith up from the retirement home to go see Roland’s stand up show

The thing about movies based on video games is that they target a very specific audience: fans of the game said movie is based on. Suffice it to say, if the fans of the game aren't interested, you don't really have another audience to fall back on. At this point, the best Hollywood can hope for is the movie being "so bad it's good" a la the Postal movie.

You know Gearbox was involved because Claptrap has a different voice actor.

Roland in the games: one of the more straight-laced, quiet, and serious characters Roland in this: Roland is black, so who’s the biggest name black actor we can get? Kevin Hart, the loud, boisterous comedian? Great! Lilith in the games: socially awkward nerd who puts on a femme fatale persona to hide it. Clearly in her 20’s-30’s Lilith in this: Middle-aged Star Lord wannabe Tina in the games: absolutely insane. Obsessed with sexy ladies and explosions, captures the man who killed her parents then forces him to participate in a tea party while electrocuting him to death. Tina in this: generic preteen girl archetype as seen in every other movie. Claptrap in the games: Silly but annoying robot buddy on the surface, but is desperately lonely because of how obnoxious others find him and also has a slightly concerning sadistic streak. Claptrap in this: Jack Black shitting himself. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jack Black and the writing is a separate issue, but there are a million other roles in the BL franchise that Jack Black would be better suited for, and Claptrap’s voice is perhaps the single most iconic of any characters. Why not hire the original voice actor, or at least a decent impression? They really pulled a Hollywood on this one. It feels like no one on the production staff has interacted with Borderlands beyond skimming the wiki. The casting clearly prioritizes name recognition over having actors who fit the roles they’re in. All personality has been sanded down to a generic Guardians of the Galaxy knock-off with none of the charm of Guardians or the source material.

When this goes straight to DVD, I'm not even going to bother pirating it.

One year ago I almost died, now I wish I did.

This feels like an SNL parody of borderlands who doesnt even understand borderlands

So basically this is not a movie for Borderlands fans. It is for those who never played or heard of the game but are fans of the actors in it.

As a huge fan and big player of Borderlands [(1500+ hours on all borderlands, played EVERY single game (tales + new tales from the borderlands included)]. This hurts, A LOT.

Here's what it comes down to for me. They have a new villain while seemingly redoing the first game's plot, and they are doing it by putting together 4 playable characters and 2 NPCs as the main cast from a time frame across 4 separate games. That's a mess to start with, but it's even worse when you consider who those characters are. Clap is only important starting 1.5 or 2 arguably (Game 1 it was just a series of robots that you rescued for inventory space) it looks like they're using him like it's game 2 here, 1.5 being significant because that is when his entire series is shut down and destroyed and he alone is saved by the remnants of Shadow-Trap. Tannis, Roland, and Lillith from game 1, and Roland and Lillith have a kind of romance that never went anywhere so that's at least legitimate, but they are all a max of 30s in the game and they look like they are minimum of '40s here, with some looking more like '50s and '60s, probably well past searching for buried treasure age. Krieg is from game 2 and should never have been ported without Maya, his love interest/best friend/balm to his insanity and hope for a normal life. Krieg, IIRC, isn't even interested in the Vault, he was just following her onto the train when they got blown up by Handsome Jack and that's what made him join. They don't even have him saying a line during the commercial, which means they are either saving it for the movie, trusting that this is enough to bring people in, or they did it terribly and are trying to cover it up for as long as possible to recoup some of their losses. And then there's Tiny Tina. Here, not so tiny as she is wearing all the stuff from game 3, also without looking up at Roland as a surrogate father figure and seemingly without the trauma that made her one of the best characters in this series, and without the upbeat attitude and humor that made her such a likable one as well. Someone said to me looking at her in this trailer is like hearing Lil Jon say 'No', or 'Stop partying and go home', it's not in character. It's not who this person is. Their characters don't mix well here and don't really play well off of one another looking just like every other found family thing out there. Also, the villain here looks like a cookie cutout with all the charm and character of cardboard. This movie looks terrible and unless this is the worst of it, I'm not seeing it in theater.

I've stood by and witnessed decades of Hollywood destroying IPs, but they were not IPs I cared for. Today I finally know what it's like to have something you love taken and destroyed by these monsters - and it's my fault. We are culpable in having sat idle let them take more and more and more and more. When will we draw the line? When will we learn 😞

So, we have: A Dr. Tannis who has white hair and is way older than Roland. A Tiny Tina who has an outfit that resembles Borderlands 3 yet is young like in Borderlands 2. Roland is still alive. We are missing Mordercai and Brick, yet somehow we have Krieg with them even though we do not have Maya who is the one keeping Krieg relatively sane. Did they even play the games before planning this movie?

This is going to be the end of Borderlands. Everything it ever was, is, and could have been, will be funnelled through this film in the public eye. If you are a fan of Borderlands you will be seen as a fan of this film. It's over 😭😭😭😭

if there exists a person who gets into the games from this movie, they'll be over the moon when they find out how much better the games are

How to tell the writers and director, and casting crew, NEVER played the games.

Imagine a bus ride with "No rest for the Wicked" playing, the camera panning through its interiors showing off our cast with slight flashbacks of their abilities while a wise old bus driver gives us a short rundown of the plot and the video ends with him saying "Get off my bus." Oh wait, that's just the iconic opening for Borderlands 1, which would have been a perfect way to do this trailer.

Are you people insane? Is it that fun to burn money? Give the money to the poor if you don't want it so badly.

You can just imagine that there are people along the way during the production of this movie that really cared about what they were working on, but between corporate interference from people with no understanding or care of the property, miscasting, and any number of behind the scene problems, this is what came out of the project. It's incredible that so many talented actors, so much talented movie production staff, and so much money can all be wasted on what is ultimately a doomed failure of a corporate product.
