because by western they can only mean USA. to me the USA is kind of a disgrace as figurehead for the west (plus I dont think we should even say the east or the west because itll only cause generalisations.
Yes. If you go to a Chinese run buffet, you will find it diced to bite sized chunks. I imagine it is easy enough to cut it with the sticks, if need be: Jelly is not as elastic as displayed on the advertisment.
@@thorondor4012 It could be a dogwhistle, you never know. Pro-racist rhetoric is really making a resurgence in the counter-culture and most of it is pretty covert in order to maintain plausible deniability. You never know what someone's true intentions are - jokes aren't just jokes anymore, satire has become real and tv characters can hold public office.
And it won't be anti-white until they served it unseasoned with frog legs and snails as side dish go finish your Chinese takeaway food and don't forget to drink some boba after the meal 😂😂
The best part is the fact that it ends by saying "It's pretty good commercial, no?" It's like the marketing team was so proud of what they came up with, they had to include a fourth-wall-break to acknowledge it, lol.
@@MidgarMerc at least in spanish, the chinese people that have an accent and i've met almost always mispronounce the r as an l (in my case im from Venezuela so they have stores everywere) for example instead of saying burro (bu like in boo and the two r's are peonounced rolling your toungue like when you imitate the sound of a bike) they say bulo or budo
@@MidgarMerc When you hear “chinese accents” in our cartoons it’s either they cant pronounce the L or they can’t pronounce the R “Herro? HERRO? You can hear me?” “He say we going wong way!”
People of all cultures (including the Chinese) have been using spoons for thousands of years. They were originally invented by the Egyptians (as far as we know). Doesn't make this commercial any less hilarious, though. :)
True Story: My family was finishing dinner at a Chinese restaurant and my mom asked what the deserts were. The waiter mentioned "Jerro" my mom said that sounds interesting what is it? The waiter said, "you know jerro, jerro" My mom still not knowing said she'd try this interesting treat. Of course he came with a bowl of Jello and she was like "oh it's jello" We still giggle today about that - everyone else knew he was trying to say jello but her.
The waiter was probably overcorrecting. It's usually Chinese who have trouble with r and Japanese who have trouble with l. However, if they learn the other sound, they may sometimes use it in the wrong places, though they won't be consistent about it. I myself have heard r for l from Chinese and l for r from Japanese. (A Chinese woman told me, "That's a nice brock you live on," and, when I ordered red bean soup, the Japanese waiter said, "You want lead bean soup?")
I found this commercial rather cute XD Specially when the poor Chinese baby couldn't tell if the jello was Strawberry, Orange or Glape. :c I actually felt sorry for the poor thing. But then he got a spoon and all was well with the world. Still a better love story than Twilight.
white ppl want to feel superior; they don't worry with silly things like facts. what would they do without depending on racist stereotypes? oh yeah, they'd have to have talent and creativity. silly me.
It's not the most culturally sensitive commercial but it certainly is stylish as far as cartoons go. I've seen far worse commercials in my life time. It was actually kind of cute watching a baby struggle to eat Jello with chopsticks.
I don't find this any more racist than the stereotype of Brits having big noses with crooked teeth... And I even smile at that. It's obviously just a bit of fun.
lol Were you conditioned as a kid when your parents bought you the 101 Dalmatians vid? I like the old movies best when London was always cloaked in fog and all Brits had a photo of the King hanging above their fireplace. All Germans looked stern and never laughed and all Russian women had biceps that would put a heavy weight boxer to shame ha ha...
I'm asian born in the Philippines with 1/8 chinese in me and raised in the US. This commercial is hilarious. I don't find it racist at all. It's only racist to those who choose to be offended by it. We all have our differences which should be celebrated. Sometimes we celebrate it through laugher.
The line at the end reminds me of the commercial where the guy used to say ancient Chinese secret from the laundry mat. No, not racist. That's how they talked back then, and maybe some still do. I remember about twenty years ago, they were going to play a Charlie Chan marathon on Fox, and so many Asians complained about it that they didn't do it. How dumb. lol Charlie Chan was awesome!
I love the end with the Chinese style lantern and the bottom dangling pieces turning into the Jell-0 logo. This is funny and may not be acceptable by todays standards, but at least these old ads had a sense of humour. I saw Pearle Bailey doing a circa '71 Jell-0 ad also on You tube and she was like "honey do you know that Jell-0 pudding makes a great pie filling too?" Thanks Pearle. Anyways I love these old ads.
@@dianewright6204It’s not even that offensive in my opinion as a Chinese person it’s just the fact that they say Chinese baby etc that sort of threw me off 😂
I remember this commercial when I was probably 4 or 5 years old. I loved this commercial because the baby was so cute. It's an adorable commercial still. I'm 55 years old now, I don't have a racist bone in my body. I'm half native indian and I get so sick of people trying to protect my feelings over some word or gesture or statue that's so suppose to upset me. The over reaction is what is upsetting and frankly it is embarrassing. Have fun enjoy life..if it's not mean don't over think it.
Erm...whether this is racist or not (zeitgeist and such)... Glorious western invention? Chinese had fucking spoons. They ate soup with it, among other things lol. Apparantly did not do the research. (Or it would ruin the punchline)
It's true that they have always used spoons for many things, but soups in China are usually served in small bowls from which one drinks the broth directly, as if from a cup, and picks the solid bits with the chopsticks. There is some regional variation (China is a very large country with lots of different regional customs and cuisines), but it's usually so.
Slight misinformation! The spoon is not a Western invention as they said at 0:35! They have been around the world since the Stone Age, most likely having started in China or Egypt. The fact that they try to make the spoon seem like a Western invention has some subtle imperialistic undertone.
Cynthia Steiner If one considers any stew, soup or even the broth as the 'ancestor' of the Jello, then (though it is stretching thing astronomically) spoons are retroactively made for Jello. In fact, the first record of something gelatinous comes from England sometime in the 1400s. It was not until 1897 that Kraft branded their product 'Jello.' Sorry, I am a big fan of 'Adam Ruins Everything.'
In the 18th and 19th centuries the Royal navy fed sick sailors a portable soup that was basically beef broth boiled down to a "Gelly" which was more of a thick and dry paste rather than the gelatin we know of today.
this is the way commercials were back then and it was different back then...............omg people stop being so petty with outdated things and worry about the things now give it up you cant change the past HELLLLLLLLLLOOO
Lol imaginary racism. Cartoons overdo things. It's done to Caucasians as well. I think the problem lies in the fact that ethnic groups were treated badly in the past by legit evil people and so certain things are not allowed in this era and this is a good example of that. Cartoon imagery of ethnicity groups are forbidden
I showed it to an Asian friend of mine, and he thought it was hilarious. He's secure with himself and his culture. He also said he thinks there is a difference between a racial joke and a racist joke. This is meant to be funny, not harmful. Let's not pretend everyone is the same. What a boring ass world that would be Can't anyone joke about the differences without a bunch of us getting all indignant and hypersensitive? When that can happen, that's when racism dies. .
It reminds me of when, the night after a Chinese takeaway, myself and some friends tried eating porridge with chopsticks. I think I was about four at the time.
Not racist? Are you effing kidding me? Using stereotypically bad english for narrator, making fun of the chopsticks, the stupid gong, and the best part, dressing the family in Kimonos...THAT'S *&^% JAPANESE!
This commercial seems to be more effected at convincing us to buy a spoon than jellow. Asian here , you can eat jellow with a chopstick ,simply cut it into cubes with your chopsticks and it would be much easier to pick it up to eat.
Agree that this is more than borderline. For one example, the chinese had no forks, but they sure as hell had big spoons. They eat a lot of soup, and every chinese restrrant gives everybody big plastic spoons with soups. How could they not know this? Evan back then, there were a lot of Chinese restrants in the USA. How would you feel about a Chinese commercial that said "poor American baby can't eat soup with a fork, so his mother gave him great Chinese invention, a spoon." See how that works?
totally not racist in any way. To suggest one country eat with chopsticks, which is true, and others eat with spoons, also true, is not racist, different cultures do things different ways, that's not racist,
This was a real commercial. I remember it from my childhood. Of course society was not as integrated in those days, and it's always easier to make fun of those you don't understand or have dealings with. This commercial was 50 years ago and I don't find it as offensive as the characters Aunt Jamima or Uncle Ben which are still used today.. I also don't think it's as offensive as naming sports teams after American Indians. You want to be offended, see Andy Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffanys.
Why do so many people automatically think that making fun with something is the same as making fun of it? Nothing in this commercial puts down Chinese.
This commercial is not racist, it is ignorant. Unfortunately, today's American society has not improved much in ignorance. This commercial would never be able to air today in time, but some people still think exactly like this. Its actually pretty sad.
