Back in December 2023, I tried and failed to catch the one train per week which stops at Bordesley station in Birmingham.
Was I successful on Saturday 30th March 2024?
Find out what could happen to Bordesley station in the future, which is the least used station in Birmingham.

Good commentary, straight to the point, easy to engage with. I see a bright future ahead of this channel, good job!

While Bordesley is due to close when the new chords are (eventually) constructed, it'll take several years before construction starts as funding has only recently been approved to develop the full business case (complete with engineering drawings) required to apply for Development Consent (a process which, in itself, takes around a year if you include all the consultation and examination stages).

When I was a boy BR put the cost of platform tickets up from 1d to 2d but my friends at school used to buy a 1½d childs single to Bordesley when train spotting at Snow Hill, then just hand it back in as they left saying that they changed their minds. A couple of years ago I was on Kidderminster station one evening and was amazed to see Bordesley on the destination board for my train and realised there was an evening match on at St. Andrews. You could have stayed on your train to The Hawthorns, West Bromwich Albion's ground which is now a busy station but used to be a Halt only open on match days. Because of the regulations about closing stations it is easier to stop one train a week than to go through the trouble of closing it.

Bordesley station needs a massive upgrade including lifts and another entrance to handle extra spectators when Birmingham City are playing at home.

Great video. It’s sad this station because it’s certainly very very unique!

Have memories of it from years ago. I started using the station for football shortly after the line to Snow Hill closed. At that time the other platform had recently closed. To the left of the current entrance there a wall was constructed probably more than 50 years ago. On the other side of the wall was a ticket hall. It would have been impressive once but was derelict when I knew it. It was always dingy and badly lit. In the 1980s it was quite well used. There were a lot of local factories whose staff were the main customers. The factories were closed one by one and replaced by businesses which didn’t employ many. There is little local housing, the main area is on the way to the Blues ground. This is on loads of bus routes, so the train is little use for the short journey into the city! Basically the station is isolated from potential passengers! One interesting fact. In the 1970s. Looking towards Birmingham on the left was a petrol station. For a time it had a massive King Statue, which could be seen from the platform!

I think that the are ment to open the gate when the service runs.Peartree in Derby is apparently another Midlands one which is locked when not in use but it has about 2 trains a day.

One a week? What's the point?!

It stops them having to go through a formal and legal station closure procedure, which is difficult and fearsomely expensive. All a bit of a farce, I agree, but that's what the law demands!

Do you know why the barrier at New St rejected your ticket? New St does not go to Bordesley. Snow Hill and Moor St go to Bordesley. Your attempt was like trying to get a train to Dover from Kings Cross.
