Boris Christoff (1914-1993)
What is it about the character of Banquo that brings forth such soporific performances from otherwise distinguished singers? Here on RU-vid I've listened, among others, to Ghiaurov, Colombara, Svetlov, and Storojev singing 'Come dal ciel precipita'- each one duller than the next. Banquo is a man stricken by terror and a sense of foreboding, yet these basses seem as involved as if they were reciting the phone book.
Christoff is another matter entirely (as he often was). When he sings about being afflicted by frightful visions and a premonition of impending doom, I believe the man entirely. The voice is a bit grainier than in his prime (I have a recording date of 1980, though I haven't been able to confirm it. In any case, it's quite late in his career), but it's still a glorious instrument. Christoff's dignity and commitment are also unwavering. I do advise Verdi purists to proceed with caution, however: there is a liberal sprinkling of portamento and scooping here, so you might have to get your "fix" elsewhere. But for those who believe, as I do, that expressive singing should trump pedantism, I'm sure you'll enjoy this wonderful memento of one of the 20th century's greatest basses.

Dear Kanchanchak, your comments is so True. I am a Boris Christoff Fan from 1977 onwards when I heard an LP with highlights of the Boris Godunov. Thereafter I was and am hooked. I collected since 1977 everything I got hold on. So lucky that I heard him live in the Netherlands, Amsterdam 1981 & Rotterdam 1984. On both occasions I met him which I will never forget till my dying day. Maybe over the top to state this but for me he is the One. Of course there are very, very good other bass singers. Boris Christoff timbre, his presence, interpretation are incomparable and emotional for me.

His interpretating of these songs is without exception the best there is. I collect his records/recordings since my 16th and now I am 48. I heard him twice live when Boris was already in his sixties. The skill to sing with that magnificant voice. And most important to bring the emotion in his interpretations. I am searching for years now for the live recoding on video of the whole Boris Godunov with Boris Christoff. Not only the excerpts on RU-vid.

What I like about Christoff is the uniqueness, not quite following the "rules" of vocal technique, but huge, open, and unapologetically basso, plus the emotional involvement. Long wished I could hear this greatest bass with the greatest tenor, Björling, then found a CD in my own dusty library, Aida, the two with lots of not exactly duets, but chiming in together. Operatic royalty!

Wow, this must be Boris' recital at Carnegie Hall! If the date 1980 is correct... extremely rare recording! Thanks a lot for sharing it! Albeit a great fan of this incomparable artist, this is the first time I hear this live performance. It's true that the voice is not in its prime (he is 66 years old here) but that unmistakable timber is still amazing. Such great artists like Boris Christoff can convert the disadvantages of the old age into deeper and even more moving interpretation. Thanks!
