It has evolved into the word "pars" in Turkish today but the word "barıs" is still used in Kazakh and the name "Boris" passed into Russian from the word "Barıs". "Barış" and "barıs" are not the same word. The meaning of the word "barış" is peace. (2nd time I wrote the same answer, I copied and pasted it. I didn't want to mess with it :)

Boris is a turkic origin name, bulgar khan used it, it comes from turkic börü which means wolf and "is" just a thing thta greeks added to it because in greek theg cant say börü and add "is"/"s" to many endings for example "Constantinopolis" "megapolis"(supercity) etc.

Ali Kemal is considered a traitor in Turkey. He was strictly against Turkish Independence war and work too hard to make turkey a mandate of UK. He was going to trial at Independence Tribunal for his betrayal but some angry crowd lynched him and smashed his head with hammers. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk disgusted by this and ordered that crowd was going to hold trial by Independence Tribunal ( Which is usually ends by capital punishment, much like France's Revoluitonary Tribunals)

By British tradition Boris John's Son is in fact Boris Kemal. I have reservations about him as PM and Brexiteer from an Irish perspective but I admire this honest and open piece of family research. Imran Besides the name change was not just the decision of the great-Grandmother. But also his grandfather, if his Grandfather want to revert back to his Turkish name. He is free to do just that after he grows up. Which he didn’t. Besides most Turks only have surname from 1934 for tax reasons. Ali Kemal died in 1922. So technically Johnson’s Grandfather didn’t have a surname.

I read it some where boris’s parent wanted to call him Baris but registration office made a mistake with spelling and wrote boris intead of baris, at the end his parents couldnt be bother with going through the hassle of changing his name and dealing with all the paperworks so they kept the name boris.

It is very interesting that Ali Kemal was a controversial political figure and even a minister of interior during the last years of Ottoman. He had to left father of Boris in the UK due to poverty and killed brutally by a mob. Nazım Hikmet a famous Turkish poet even wrote a poem about how he has been killed. Yet, now his grandson became a UK nationalist, life is full of sarcasm.

During the Turkish War of Independence Ali Kemal was working and writing for Great Britain's and Sultan's interests and he was underestimating and humiliating the Turkish army and its commanders, he also didn't accept the government and parliament in Ankara as a legit one because of these reasons after the victory a Turkish commander had him taken and lynched in a city called Izmit in western Turkey.

As Boris will say long after this video, his grandfather was on the wrong side as he thought that Turks would never win the war againist the britiain-backed greeks. However Mustafa Kemal and his comrades defeated the enemy. Although he changed his mind once he understood Turks won, it was not enough to save him from being killed by being lynched by Turks.

No no, he had a point. The language was a mix of Arabic, Persian and Turkish, written in Arabic alphabet. Turkey has swapped to Latin alphabet with a language reform that is more focused on what does an average Turk speaks rather than what and well-educated/high ranked men of Istanbul would speak. That reform helped us a lot on increasing the very poor percentage of reading&writing remained from the Ottomans yet we had to leave the old language completely, now the historians and politically engaged(Erdoğan fanboys xd) people know the old language.
