The only episode of the "Thriller" anthology series to fall into public domain. This episode is directed by and is starring John Newland (the Host and director of One Step Beyond). It is nice to see him as the lead actor in this.
Me too Gary. I’m 69, will be 70 in July and love Boris movies as well as all these movies from 1940’s to early 69’s. It’s all I watch as I don’t watch TV today. Quit watching TV in 2018. Utube is it.
same here, few could do spooky like Boris did. Vincent Price was good at spooky too. my mom loved him. i remember watching the Pit and the Pendulum with mom on tv 1960's , and Dr Phibes. so spooky. cheers 🥂
@@Ourladyrules so beautiful that you mention your mother. She never liked horror. She was very afraid of death, Even speaking about health problems...I miss her terribly. This is where the spooky part comes in. I often think about her once beautiful body lying in her coffin!!! Sorry!
I've seen this as a kid and never forget it years of not seeing it on tv didn't erase the memory thank you RU-vid for reacquainting me with my first night mare😢😮😢😮
I agree. So much nasty stuff in the shows of today, cursing using the F word, the GD words and others, not to mention the nudity. Nothing is left to the imagination anymore. Plus the acting is usually pretty bad compared to the old stars of yesteryear. If only we could turn back the clock to when tv had family shows everyone could watch with classy and talented actors and you got thrills, chills and scares from the stories instead of realistic gore.
It was summer vacation from grade school when watching these. The Weird Taylor was another one that scared the stuffing out of me . Check it out and see if you remembered this one. .
Scariest thing I saw on TV, period, when I was a kid. Like OUTER LIMITS' Zanti Misfits, it isn't as scary as you THOUGHT it was when you return to it as an adult, but it's still great.
There's nothing like these old black & white 60's shows! The suspense factor is so much better than anything produced now, it's almost like reading... 😊 Thank you for sharing these classics that we'd never find elsewhere!
Boris Karloff as Colonel March was a tour we force! No violence, sex, cursing, or nudity. Just a great script with great actors and the experience of being transported into the time and place of the story. On a differ note, Boris was a great friend of Frank Sinatra. Boris would visit him and bring freshly cut flowers from his garden. In real life Boris was a gentleman and was very polite and well mannered. He was a genius.
John New land, Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone were fantastic actors. This show were filled with suspense and incredible actors! Great show!
It's a shame John Newland isn't around and in his prime today. Not only was he a terrific director, he had a great screen presence. A genuine subtle actor. RIP John.
From the early sixties Boris Karloffs THRILLER series This is a spooky and curious TV series in black and white Welcome to the world of the strange and macabre.
Holy Crap! I forgot all about this wonderful series! How interesting and absolutely fascinating to study Boris Karloff's acting and delivery. Gems all! Thanks!
Since the familiar can't cross water and they knew they'd encounter it back in the basement, did anyone else yell at them to carry buckets of water?! 69yo and these STILL get to me🤣🙈
@thhomasppp, That book is a Classic! I think it was edited by Bennett Cerf. I read and reread that book of Ghost Stories for many years. "The Mezzotint" was one of the stories, scary as heck! This movie changed a few details in the original story. The descriptions of the action, what was seen --- were all deliciously frightening. Highly recommend it. Thank you for reminding me, thhomasppp.
@@OceanSwimmer Yes by Bennett Cerf..I have an old copy with illustrations. I think The Willows is my new fav. ! The Mezzotint was great too. You're welcome !
I love that this series uses wealth and prettiness as a vibe of protection that does not actually protect. I especially love the carriages and horses and long dresses and fancy oil lamps.
Piano keys playing off-key notes, a deep Cello sustaining notes at the very bottom of the instruments lowest register, a timpani drum pounding intermittently between the other notes.......a body lying across the organ keyboard sounding dissonant and foreboding.......as sure as my name is Boris Karloff.......'This is a thriller' !!
It's in the September 1933 issue of Weird Tales. Co-writen by Mark Schorer. Richard Matheson wrote the teleplay. He is the absolute best. Twilight Zone and I Am Legend.
This scared me quite a bit when I was 9 years old. The Andrew character was British if I recall correctly. It was casting perfection with a face like his. Ok, the familiar was something from The Outer Limits but still creepy enough to suit me. I love John Newland, such a class act. His series One Step Beyond was fabulous and he was the perfect host. I have the box set for which I'm grateful. The stories were based on documented paranormal encounters. Well worth the watch. Thank you Emmanuel. You've got my sub and all notifications bell, rung. This was such a treat. :o)
My husband just opened the door and scared the livin' tar outta me! Lol ( It's midnight and he just got home...me with headphones on so he had no idea I was watching something scary) I literally jumped! LOL
The wife I know and she’s a good actress - used to see her a lot. The butler was marvelous - real fear, real expressions in his face. Newland I know from his Something Steps Beyond as the host, but I really had no idea he could act so well. Without the accent, he is very posh British in behavior. Love this scary tale. Thanks so much :) 🎭😧
I like how Antoinette Bower is so convincingly grandiloquent when she says lines like, “I don’t know. I don’t know.” Ms. Bowers, much like longtime soap opera and tv drama actress Judith Chapman, has appeared on literally dozens of tv shows, including: “The Fugitive,” “Hogan’s Heroes,” “The Invaders” and “Mission:Impossible.” She’s like the “Harold Stassen of American Network Television.” And, what about Austrian actor. Reggie Nalder? He had a long career, portraying creepy and ghoulish characters. He was great as the ruthless assassin in Alfred Hitchcock’s, “The Man Who Knew Too Much.” Mr. Nalder would have been great as a warlock or evil sorcerer on “Dark Shadows.”
The horror suspense ones are the real gems , the other episodes were iffy , but all and all, from a scale from 1 to 10, I give the "Thriller" series a 10 ...... why ? ... Because the horror episodes are so good that you forget all about the iffy ones , 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
got to admit i giggled more than a few times. It certainly had early-talkies vibes about it with all the theatrics and stilted characters, but it was interesting to watch
I was 6 too and went to bed TERRIFIED. The scariest thing I ever saw as a kid. Scarier than the Zanti Misfits on OUTER LIMITS or the Captain on ONE STEP BEYOND.
Fun fact for all of you horror buffs: Reggie Nalder, who made a brief appearance starting at 32:00, played the vampire Barlow in the Tobe Hooper version of the 1979 film 'Salem's Lot. It was also a non-speaking part.
They should have a channel that only show these types of movies. Not TCM . Even the old The Island Of Dr Moreau is good .The movie about the man hunting people on his island is good. Thank you. 😊 ❤
REGGIE NALDER WAS AS CREEPY IN THIS AS HE WAS IN SALEM'S LOT !!!GARY BAILEY KING OF DARKNESS AND GOD OF THUNDER AND LIGHTNING /GARY BAILEY P.S. AGREE WITH EROME I ALSO ,LOVE JOHN NEWLAND AS A HOST, DIRECTOR, AND ACTOR, BRAVISIMO TO MR. NEWLAND...
I remember watching this when I was a young child and we had an uncle who used to go outside and how like a wolf! It used to scare the big Jesus out of us
