Frankenstein's Monster. Two contrasting performances. One iconic role. Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi strut their stuff as Mary Shelley's horror icon. We compare their portrayals of this fearsome classic monster.
Featuring scenes from Frankenstein (1931): An obsessed scientist creates a living being from body parts, not realizing it has a madman's brain.
And
Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man (1943): When Lawrence Talbot turns into a werewolf, he decides to approach Dr Frankenstein for a cure. On realizing that he is dead, Lawrence finds himself pitted against the doctor's monster.

@@sammontanez6908 Boris Karloff, as the Frankenstein creature, had more natural and fluid movement but Bela Lugosi had more robotic movement as the creature. What is missing from this comparison are the two commonly ignored facts. Boris Karloff portrayed the creature when he had his original abnormal brain and Lugosi played him after Ludwig Frankenstein put the man with broken neck's brain (Igor's brain) in the creature. Karloff's version of the creature was innocent-like, had an almost childish wonder about the world around him. But equally, he had a jaded view of the world in short thanks to Fritz who abused him. So, he hurts the people who treats him terribly or feared him. For the ones showed kindness towards him, he returned the kindness Karloff was the only one one that give the creature a voice which was the creaature's own words. "She hates me like others" "We belong dead". The other fact is the original 1931 "Frankenstein" was a serious horror film and "Wolfman Meets Frankenstein" was relegated to be a "B" movie which had a campy storyline. Karloff warned of that as they made more sequels.

Take into account, when Lugosi is stumbling along with his arms outstretched, it's because the Monster is supposed to be blind (as made clear at the end of the previous movie, "Ghost of Frankenstein"). But that detail had been eliminated from the switch after filming those scenes, so people think the Monster is walking around that way for no reason.

People always seem to forget that Lugosi's portrayal is a completely different monster from what Karloff played. They forget that when Lugosi played the monster he can speak (although his dialogue is muted) and most importantly he is BLIND, all because in the previous movie Ygor had his brain places in the monster, the blood types are different thus causing his blindness. But, all of this information is left out of Lugosi's portrayal (brilliant move on the producer and director's part) causing people to laugh at his acting. Given how it was originally written Lugosi did a very competent performance.

These old universal horror films hardly followed continuity in the sequels. How many times has Frankenstein’s castle been destroyed and then next film it’s still standing. People laughed at Lugosi’s accent in test screenings of this film but I find it hard to believe since he spoke as the monster at the end of ghost of Frankenstein and I don’t think anybody laughed before so why now. I prefer Karloff more, but at least Lugosi had more energy here than Lon Chaney jr in ghost of Frankenstein who never made a sound and looked like he was sleep walking.

Besides the acting, of course, much of what made Karloff's monster more iconic is the suitability of his natural physical characteristics: His angular, thin, lanky stature; The sunken, hollow, cheeks; The shape of his skull; His teeth. Of course there's no comparison to Karloff. But Bela was also given a script in which the monster was blinded so that's why he's acting the way he is. Sad that he turned down the original role because it was a lumbering oaf of a part... and that's exactly what he's remembered for :(

Lugosi' s monster was never written as being completely blind as is evident if you watch him throughout the film. His vision is obviously greatly diminished as per the last film, GOF. However, before the battle with the Wolf Man, during the electrical rejuvenation sequence, you can see through various short, deliberate, close ups of the Monster's eyes, that his vision is being completely restored. The Monster does not battle the Wolf Man blind. It was both foolish and unfair to Lugosi to not have any reference made to this. However, even with his sight restored, Lugosi plays the Monster with the same threateningly extended arms. This appears not to be related to being blind. It is Lugosi' s interpretation of how to make the Monster frightening.....and inescapable. No need to apologize. It's' s a great performance.

BRAVO as I've been a big fan of the Universal Frankenstein films ever since ages of 7 & 10 back in the day of the early 1970s. Although I liked when they first showed close ups of Karloff as the monster in the original due to the scary looking set of eyes as well as that evil sinister grin Bela Lugosi put on as the monster while being given back the strength the monster had, many others found Lon Chaney Jr and Glenn Strange who both were bigger men had the perfect size especially Strange who stood roughly 6ft-5inches.

Karloff's gaunt face was _so_ much better suited for the Monster than Lugosi's rounder one. Lugosi was offered the role of the Monster before Karloff was, but he thought it beneath him since it wasn't a speaking part, and turned it down. He accepted, in 1943, for Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man, the part of the same mute Monster he had disdained to play in 1931, because his star had fallen quite a bit in the intervening twelve years, and as we all know, ended his career acting in low-budget stinkers like Plan 9 from Outer Space, because it was the only work he could get.

Ironically, Lugosi was the first to be given the role of the monster. But the shoddy make-up (that made him look like the Charles Ogle monster from the 1910 short film) and his reluctance to play the role caused him to quit. His resignation from the role was vindicated in the 'Meets the Wolfman' movie as he gave his all but couldn't capture the character like Karloff could. Here's some trivia. Had Lon Chaney Sr. lived he was slated to play Dracula. And maybe even the Frankenstein Monster. I wonder how those films would have worked with HIM in the roles?

Yep. They should have put in text with data identifying who is who and which movies we're seeing parts of.

The first movie is Frankenstein 1931 with Boris Karloff. The other one is Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman 1943 with Bela Lugosi. It's a combination sequel of The Wolfman 1941 and The Ghost of Frankenstein 1942.

Lugosi just felt, sadly, comical in the role. He did not have the look to pull it off.

I actually prefer Lugosi Frankenstein monster. Has more of a hulking look.

Lugosi WISELY turned down Frankenstein! When your the FIRST to PLAY an ICONIC Character, your USUALLY the BEST! As HE was with Dracula and Karloff with Frankenstein!

It's not really a fair comparison, Lugosi was playing a monster that was supposed to be blind and could talk until the last minute they cut out all of the Talking part so it's not really a fair comparison

None of that matters, he Lugosi looks terrible in the makeup and lumbers around like an idiot. Karloff's performance is sensational humane deeply nuanced sympathetic. There's is no comparison

Sam Montanez said it best. He was right! Now I don't have to taint the water supply with massive quantities of skittles and give everyone cavities!

Glenn Strange played the best Frankenstein

Karloff portrayed a man that was literally recreated from different body parts and given the brain of a serial killer by mistake. Lugosi portrayed the monster in a similar way but Karloff's version was much more dramatic, his reaching his arms towards the light for example was a reference to heavenly light and his yearn for it. Karloff character showed confusion at times whereas Lugosi's didn't.

I find the Bela cult kinda funny and always trying to win...I do think he was great in many roles but it's like a personality cult.

To me Karloff was the best and only monster. So let’s compare Frankensteins to The Three Stooges. Curly was the best and greatest third stooge. Curly=Karloff. Shemp=Glenn Strange, Joe Besser=Lon Chaney Jr., curly Joe=Bela . I know it’s strange logic. 😁

The Wolfman was as agile to the extreme that Frankenstein was rigid; off script, Frankenstein would not stand a chance.

Bela as Igor carried "Son Of Frankenstien"...Karloff as the monster was relegated to almost a bit part.

No two ways about it Karloff was the best Frankenstein followed by Glenn Strange,Lugosi just wasn't that impressive in the role neither was Lon Chaney Jr but both mastered thier own monster characters with the Wolfman and Dracula
