Born Losers (1967) trailer

This mostly forgotten gem hit the circuit in 1967. This film is mainly notable for spawining the largely cult-worshipped "Billy Jack" series, with Tom Laughlin playing the titular character. The film was actually a modest money-maker and was American International's highest grossing flick until 1979, when The Amityville Horror was released.

I remember sitting with my Dad and watching "Born Losers" for the first time when I was in Jr. High in the 90's and it blew my mind away. Billy Jack was the sh*t!

FINALLY!!! Took forever to find this. I remember several years ago I was on summer vacation in highschool, bored to death flipping through channels, and one channel that always shows really old movies was playing this, and it caught my eye. Ended up watching the whole movie and loving it. As a 23 year old who can't stand the idea of "men" in modern culture, this guy was a real man. You only get that in older movies. There are no real men in movies anymore. They're all fashion models. Not him.

If memory serves me correctly, this film is the 1st in the Billy Jack series of the 60's and 70's. The late Tom Laughlin and his wife Delores Taylor (who star in all these series films) did their utmost best to show the nation how this country was losing its morals and decency towards one another and they did their best to show how the American people and the government continued to mistreat Native Americans. Even though their films had a great impact on the young viewers of that era, it did little to open the eyes of the US government who continued the mistreatment of the Native American tribes which still happens to this day. Tom and Delores not only portrayed good decent moral people in their films, but they actually lived their entire lives just as they depicted it in film... sort of art imitating life if you will. These were two beautiful people not only talking the talk but, they walked the walk as well. R.I.P. Mr. Laughlin and may the good Lord continue to bless Delores Taylor as she continues her life until meeting up with her late husband again in the afterlife. Her and Tom were married from 1954 to 2013 when Tom passed away.

I saw this movie for the first time at an all night drive-in theater at 3am in the morning. The action was quite intense and when the sun came up a little after 5am I was very much awake. After all these years, I do enjoy watching it. I agree with many others that this is perhaps the most loved of all the Billy Jack films.

BORN LOSERS was the American public's first introduction the 20th century Korean martial art, 'Hapkido', a eclectic, hand-to-hand fighting combat system originated from ancient Korean Tang Soo Do and Japanese Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu. Hence you see Billy Jack's fast sweeping and arcing kicks, edge of hand blows, and arm joint twists, locks, and takedowns. At the time, few people knew that it was Hapkido. Most assumed it was karate. Hapkido is still little known in the U.S., but more so today.

The Born Losers is the originator of Billy Jack years before Paul Kersey in Death Wish, Ellen Ripley in Alien, and Richard B. Riddick in Pitch Black. Billy Jack is gradually introduced protagonist part-Native American Green Beret Vietnam Vet as a supportive to lead character fighting The Born Losers. Some politicos don't approve of Billy's karate tactics but, his violence is justifiable next to Bruce Lee's.

@Kersey475 You might be referring to the stylized, SIN CITY, from 2005 where antihero vigilante Bruce Willis' character mutilates, maims, tortures, and summarily executes particularly heinous, savage, vicious, ultra-violent, diabolical villains. It's a revenge fantasy of the highest and lowest order. But I must caution those here...never employ evil to destroy evil.

The actress that played the honey pot in white on the bike, the heroine in the film, turned up - albeit in a smaller role (and not as cute) - about 7 years later in "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry."

I saw this at the Drive-In in the 60's, and instantly fell for Elizabeth James in that white bikini. She was in one more movie, and then I guess retired from show business. I think she writes children's books now under a different name. I remember the 3 biker movies I saw that night. "The Wild Angels",(Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra), "Born Losers", and "CC and Company" (Joe Namath, Ann Margaret, and Bill Smith) Sure miss those sixties.

What other movie was Elizabeth James in? My dad took my brother and I to see Born Losers at the theater in down town Nashville back in '67 while my mother and sister went shopping. That was how it was done back then when you lived in the country. I was about six years old, and the uncut version of this film is VERY violent and rapey. Obviously I hadn't been exposed to anything much beyond Captain Kangaroo and Lost In Space. I'm sure my Dad had no idea what we were going to see, he probably just saw the poster with a girl in a bikini on a motorcycle and thought "that's the one." Mom said I was white as a ghost when she met us after the movie. Needless to say it made an impression on my young mind and I never forgot it. A few years later when I'm 15 or so, Billy Jack was all the rage, and when I finally got the chance to go see it, I thought "that's the guy from that biker movie!" I was all-in on Billy Jack. I went years without ever seeing The Born Losers again, and it was everything I remembered and more. Now, in retrospect and more than 50 years down the line, I think TBL is the superior of all Laughlin's films, even though it was dashed together (with James getting a writing credit) to tap into the biker movie craze and make money to finance what Laughlin really wanted to say, Billy Jack. TBL doesn't mess around with all that hippy dippy, mistreated Indian, peace and love nonsense. Chicks in bikinis, bikes, good guys and bad guys, and plenty of ass kicking! In fact, IMO, The Born Losers is the best of all the biker films, including Glory Stompers, Satan's Sadists, Hells Angels on Wheels, all of 'em, except of course, Easy Rider, which really isn't a biker film. The Born Losers is awesome. Tom Laughlin was a unique and noteworthy figure in independent films, if a little crazy, and he made a lot of money and was innovative and determined. So what other film was Elizabeth James in? I can't find her anywhere. Can't act but cute as a button in that white bikini.

@@RidgeRunner-lz5ko "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry"...she had a small part playing a police dispatcher. (1974). Sadly she has passed away. "Elizabeth James was born on December 23, 1944 in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. She was an actress and writer, known for The Born Losers (1967), Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974) and Love from a Stranger (1958). She died on February 10, 2007 in Lynchburg, Virginia, USA."

i think that this influenced all the early Chuck Norris movies. This movie was made after the James Bond series, Star Trek, The Wild Wild West & 2 years after The Green Hornet & a few years before the Kung Fu series & before 5 Fingers of Death hit the movies in America. But i still believe that the first american martial art movie is "Blood in the Sun" with The Great James Cagney, who's fight scenes were like watching the UFC. It was crude but Cagney {a Judo Black Belt} was intense.

@Kersey475 Interesting conversation here on morality. It is the moral and theological belief of the modern Roman Catholic Church. I can't speak for other religions although am confident that Buddhism believes the same. When in desperation or deliberately, evil is employed to destroy evil, the victorious is still another evil. Worse, in these evil against evil conflicts, the winner ends up twice as powerful as before.

One of those so-bad-it's-good films. I actually like this better in some respects to the later Billy Jack movies. The girls are still good looking to this day. Notice Tom Laughlin had not learned his hapkido moves yet and kind of fakes it. Billy Jack as a true martial artist would come later.
