Regarding the questions here on the scarify, aerate and verticut debate, I did a lot of research into it as it opens many questions. The best way to view it I think is that cutting or raking your lawn will aerate to a point. Scarifying is like combing your hair, getting to a knot, and just tugging until you either take your hair out at the root, or the hair breaks. The "knot 'in this case is the thatch though, (or dead hair). Now try this;, Go to a small patch of garden, say, 2 foot by 2 foot, (in old money) and run a spring tine rake over it about 5 times. The stuff you remove will (or should be) the thatch. That is your typical scarifier, and it will aerate your soil slightly by allowing light and oxygen in. Now, on the same patch, run a stanly knife across the same area about 5 times. This is your varicutter in essence. Now rake the same patch with a spring tine rake.. Amazing the amount more you picked up right? And you have further allowed light and oxygen in by cutting slightly into the soil , and also removing more thatch. The downside is that you slightly compacted the soil around where the blade went in, but not too much, It has all helped aerate the soil, but is not the same as an aerator, although it helps. Now lets look aerators.. There are many on the market that may not do as good a job as they could.. In fact, some could compound the problem you are trying to remove. Take a half inch pipe, block off both ends and drive it into the grass with a hammer until the going gets tough. Mark how far you got in, then remove the Pipe and remove the stuff at either end that you used to block soil going in and hammer it into a fresh piece of grass. You should take less strikes of the hammer to attain the same depth as the soil should now be in the pipe and not compacted. This is in effect what is known a a "hollow tine fork" believed to be far better for aeration. Unfortunately, you have to pay big bucks for that sort of aeration on a machine and although hand tools are available, they are labour intensive. Imo, the varicuttur is the next best option. Hope this helps.

Tip…place the cable over your shoulder, around the back of your neck and allow to hang over the other shoulder. Enables much easier and better cable control, keeping it out the way.

Hi mate, bought one of these today second hand on the back of your review, cleaned it all up today because it was quite dirty, I noticed mine only has the sponge filter on one side (not the side that the motor, belt and pulleys are, but the opposite side), do you know if that is correct, they only have one filter fitted and on the side opposite the motor side, or are they supposed to have two filters fitted, one on each side, thanks.

Thanks for the video. Cleaning - you can easily open up the top, remove the screws, gently pry the plastic parts, the plastic parts come off and you can get to the filters, motor, etc. to clean. Done it a few times. Motor - overheats very quickly and you have to wait 10 minutes before using again Blades - mine are worn and the replacements aren't cheap Collector - ok but is annoying as you can't fill fully otherwise the two red clips separate Wire - typical thin bosch so be careful winding it around the machine, and as you say it is short Overall it is an ok machine, next step up is a petrol machine for a lot more money. I verticut once a month on setting 3

The wire tines are called a raker. The Steel flat blades are called a scarifier. So many users get the names so wrong. Scarify your lawn and throw on some seed which will drop into the grooves. Your lawn will look brilliant in a couple of weeks.

I've used this machine on lower settings when re seeding, but it constantly cuts out. am I going to deep, it is the first scarify in 3 years. Just got the machine. I think its really good on setting 3 and 4.

Maybe the ground is a little hard if its not been touched in 3 years, i not had any issues with cutting out. Maybe do it when the ground is slightly damp, not to wet though as it is an electric scarifier.

Start on the higher settings then work down, don't start too low as it will struggle. Do passes at different angles 👍

@@pyracantha6028 Mine cuts out if I continue for any time when the box is full. My lawn is in a state so have to empty every 5 yards. Presume the thermal cut out protects the motor

I have mine on the highest setting i.e. Furthest away from the ground, so just a light touch, but it cuts out after every pass of about 10 meters in a straight line. So annoying. Even after cleaning the filter. Anyone know why it has a filter on one side? I'm wondering if this filter restricts airflow. Had to remove the screws to clean it.

Is verticutting the same as scarifying?
@pyracantha6028
@pyracantha6028 2 года назад
Hi make yes its the same, I hadn't even heard of it referred to as verticuttering until I got this Bosch model, I also have a petrol powered Hyundai scarifier and the design in term of the blades are the same.

@@pyracantha6028 thanks for the reply. Same I’d never heard of verticiutting either but I gather it’s probably just the same thing. Thanks

Worst thing about this machine is the collection box fills up too quickly. It's a real pain.

yes I agree, not to bad for smaller lawns but at least it has a collection box

You shouldnt be cutting that deep unless your going to be reseeding and top dressing which you didnt mention you were doing? A lighter verticut more frequently would be more beneficial after you've got some treatments on your lawn which are needed by the look of it matey

Before you try to purchase a bosch product, I suggest you try to get through to a manager on the tech team there, or try to get a number to log a complaint about the poor service they provide. I wasted more than 24 hours now trying to get tech info on a product which should have been simple even to a monkey to provide. I have yet to been able to get through to a manager, or been offered a call back, .. just told they were in a meeting. Same old excuse every time. Meeting for what? .. deciding what quantity of bananas to purchase staff on the telephone lines? The closest I managed to a manager was Sarah who thought what she had to say was more important than what I had to say. Motor mouth does not get close even. My guess is she is underweight as she would never get time to slip even a banana into her gob to shut her up enough to listen to the customer.. She even had the cheek to refuse to allow me to make a complaint against her

Bosch don't have customer support for anyting gardening related. Their team ask you to figure out the problem yourself and if you want to buy a spare part email them in the part number.
