Apparently the little blobs of rubber on the screw heads are for tamper protection. Bosch will (try to) only honor the warranty if the rubber is still intact.

Just a note: Bosch replaced my motor on my Scott E-Spark 710 with a brand new 2018 performance line CX motor free of charge even though the motor was nearly 6 months out of warrantee.. My Scott was bought in may 2016. I think the reason was because the motor had had done 2300 miles. Here's what happened. Around early November 2018, because the 2yr warrantee had run out I took the bike to a local bike shop for a proper service. He noticed the crank bearings were going. I did a google search and found there had been problems with the earlier motors. Crank bearings going after 6months with 3 and 4 thousand miles. Mine had only done 2300mls. So even though the bike was 5 months out of warrantee I took it back to the shop I got it from, who BTW were brill. They did a full test on the motor and said they would contact Bosch regarding repair. 3 days later I got a phone call saying Bosch will replace the motor. One week later the 2018 new motor arrived took bike back to shop to swap motors. No questions ask.

You must be a very lucky man Protaget1. Sadly, your story is not the norm.
@protarget1
@protarget1 5 лет назад
It's because of the low mileage and type of terrain over 2.5yrs. Remember Bosch were replacing the older motors without hesitation, under warrantee with 4k mils. So I suggested to present it to Bosch under the fair use, of the consumer law. Bearings going with only 2300mils over 2.5yrs. to me was not fair usage. So Bosch, then ask for the computer read out for the motor over the 2.5yrs.regarding service history ect. and how the motor had been used in that period. The motor had done Eco 20%. Tour 50%. Sport 10%. Turbo 20%. It took them 3days to decide to replace motor. What the Dealer did was make sure the bearings were greased properly before they fitted

Great video Pete! Now to buy a bearing press :) Any thoughts about using heat to remove the bearings in place of a press? That needle bearing looks like a bear.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 5 лет назад
Hi, I did consider heat, but I am a little weary of the plastic gear. I think it would be possible to refit the bearing by heating the housing a little and freezing the bearing. But I don't think you would get enough heat for removal without the possibility of affecting the gear or gear bonding?Remembering that currently, nothing is available for these motors, if it breaks, game over :(

I have fitted a motor the other way around, I removed a failed Active Line Plus and fitted a Performance Line CX. All bolts and cover screws were in the same place and same size, wiring/plugs fitted too. The aluminium mounting bracket from motor to frame was different and you would need to change the crankarms and motor covers. You may need to change the sprocket size to suit what ever gearing you have on the back of the bike. Hi Pete, I have a Bosch Performance Line CX, and a few days ago it began to make a noise, mostly on emtb o turbo mode but only at climbing.... Similar to a coffee grinder. How can I know the kind of bearings or kit I need to replace? Thanks a lot
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 5 лет назад
The “coffee grinder” noise is usually the first sign that the main motor bearing is failing. As your bike is 2018, it should be covered under warranty. As your bearing has failed so soon, this normally points to an issue with water getting into the bearing? This maybe from a deep-water crossing, hosing/pressure washing the bike around the crank area etc. You can normally confirm if it is only the main motor bearing by removing the chain from the front sprocket and turning the pedals. You will hear the bearing while pedalling forward, when you pedal backwards, you are then listening to the crankshaft bearings. Either way, if this is something you want to fix yourself, I would leave the motor in the bike, remove the right hand crank arm and sprocket, remove any plastic motor covers and then remove the right-hand motor cover, you will then be able to see and feel all the bearings and ensure you get what you need. Or, you can send your motor to us for repair. I hope this answers your question?

Hi Barry, You can put a smear of silicone grease on the left-hand crankshaft bearing, it won't hurt but it doesn't last long and tends to collect a lot of dirt and grit. Personally, I no longer bother greasing this bearing. It doesn't seem to be as badly affected as the others because it doesn't sit in a deep recess like the right-hand bearing.
@barrycorney3665
@barrycorney3665 5 лет назад
@@Ebikemotorcentre I did both sides as shown in the video using the "SilverHook" silicone grease (-30c to 180c) I got off Ebay recently for the battery terminals. I used an old bit of cable tie as a "pointing key" to ensure behind the RH circlip around the crankshaft was packed full from the bearing to the outer edge and no voids. There was no grease behind the plastic dust seal on the main bearing so that's now sorted- but I've been keeping the bike in the corner of my "man cave" and noticed today that a fair bit of the grease has ended up on the floor? It's not that warm in here, maybe 18c but is this normal? Might have to whip off the crank arm and have a look at what it's like now but was hoping the grease wouldn't melt? It'll probably get warmer than this during use? Would the Bosch grease be better?? Thanks again- just trying to be pro-active before using it in bad conditions, give it the best chance possible!!

I have a question, I bought a haibike with a bosch 45 performance motor. It works fine but after I drove a few kilometers it starts to make a crackling noise while I step on the ride side pedal. The noise always comes in the same position of pedals. The bike have only 600 km but it is from 2014. The crackling noise is more or less loud do to the momentum from my pedaling.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 года назад
Hi Jan, First try tightening the motor bolts. As you apply pedal pressure the motor can creak against the frame. If this doesn't cure it? Check seat post by standing up and pedalling, next all rear shock and suspension linkages if you have any, last rear wheel spindle and cones etc. Most noises like cracks and creaks are transmitted to the area by the frame, but it is not normally the motor itself. The only other thing it could be with the Bosch Classic motor that you have is they do tend to break the large plastic drive gear, but I don't think this is the case here.

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 года назад
Hi Jim, There is normally only two reasons for this. 1, The front chain sprocket has worn through the soft aluminium sprocket carrier on the motor (this can happen quite quickly if the front sprocket nut becomes lose or the wrong sprocket is fitted. 2, The freewheel clutch bearing has failed This is the large clutch bearing that transfers drive from the crankshaft to the sprocket carrier. I hope this points you in the right direction, feel free to email me through my site if you need any parts or further help.

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre Год назад
No, the plastic gear and the idle gear as we called it back when we made this video, can only go one way round. If the idle gear is fitted upside down, it will rub on the bearing below it.

Hello Pete, to open a Gen3 performance line is the same procedure as Gen2 or is more complicated like Gen4? Kindly thank you
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 9 месяцев назад
The Gen 3 is not a bad motor to take apart. remove the large circlip on the drive side if fitted (later motors do not have this) then remove cover screws on drive side and gently lever the cover up, but be carful of the casket seal. Once the cover is off, remove left side small crankshaft circlip and remove crankshaft complete with outer sleeve. This will allow you to remove the large plastic gear and access the rest of the motor.

tell me what is the reason for the backlash of the shaft back and forth by 0.5 cm. The star does not immediately move and the shaft has free travel. Motor run bosch active line plus 4 thousand kilometers
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 года назад
The backlash is caused because several things have to happen before everything becomes engaged and locked. Most of what you are feeling is that when you turn the crankshaft, the crankshaft gear has to lift the transfer gears until their carrier is putting pressure on the torque sensor. In reality, It is only probably less than half a tooth by the time the slack has been taken up and should not be noticeable while riding, but perfectly normal.

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 5 лет назад
Don't worry John, the board was fine. The board is extremely thick with no components on the back. Removal of the board is extremely risky as the main heavy motor wires are soldered to it. You would stand a lot more risk of damaging the board by removing it.However, I do take your point, and in fact I now use a bearing puller if changing a left-hand crankshaft bearing in situ.

What is the average age of bosch cx before it needs rebuilding. I'm considering the 5 year warranty but it's $537.00 US. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 3 года назад
This depends massively on so many different variables that it can't really be quantified. The length of time a motor normally lasts depends on riding style, riding terrain, bike cleaning habits and equipment, countries climate and weather conditions (wet or dusty), how you transport your bike and how you store your bike etc. If you jet wash your bike for example the warranty would be an excellent choice because your motor may last as little as 100 miles. If you ride on the road, keep your bike in a warm garage and wash it occasionally, it could last over 50,000 miles (at which point you would probably have sold the bike and bought a newer model). This is a question I am asked a lot, but sadly, it's very tricky to answer.

I honestly just would love any answer from anyone because the bike is 3 months old with 700 miles and I am gutted this happened. Just want to know if there is anything I should worry about or is the system pretty rugged? I am worried about that silver gear looking piece that the crank goes onto.. ect ect. thanks for any feedback!
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 года назад
Hi ZTallant90, The crankshaft is extremely strong but you can do internal damage from a crank strike. If the motor is spining and the crank stops very suddenly, it can snap the teeth off the crankshaft drive gear, transfer gear and break the aluminium transfer gear holder. If the strike is hard enough, it can sometimes damage the main motor bearing. I would fit your new crank-arm but leave the chain off the front sprocket. Turn the pedal arms back and forth and just make sure everything still feels smooth and quiet before riding. If you have damage and can't get it fixed through warranty, we will be able to repair your motor and guarantee it, to give you peace of mind. Bosch said it was probably due to water getting in and rejected the warranty (2 1/2 years old) I pulled it apart and found the needle clutch and large main bearing rusted and stuffed due to no bearing protection washer. Cleaned, replaced bearings but still coming up with fault. Bearing kits are not available from Bosch in NZ and they are not happy if you open them up to do the job even if they have rejected a warranty so they refused to help clear the codes or offer any help other than to buy a new motor. Why do you need the size? Just go to our website or one of our worldwide partners and buy a main motor bearing.

Hii there,could it be possible to make it a Sppeddelec? can I get a barrel toothweel set for that? my engine keeps breaking down every 9000 km
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 5 лет назад
Personally, I wouldn't bother. mid-drive ebikes are generally built a lot more robust and therefore heavier than a standard bike so I would stick to a standard pedal bike if you want to convert something.

Why do Bosch make a motor that fails in the wet? Why is dirt and water allowed into the seals?
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 года назад
It's not only Bosch, most common ebike motors let water in because they were all primarily designed for road bikes. As road bikes, the normal seal of a bearing will keep the motor protected. When the industry started putting these motors into mountain bikes, the motor manufacturers were possibly unprepared for the conditions and cleaning regimes these motors found themselves up against. The manufacturers are getting ontop of this and starting to add better seals etc.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 года назад
@Maciej Jan Długosz We are now using a spring-less double lip rotary shaft seal to protect the right-hand crankshaft bearing and this combined with the MudStop has made no noticeable range difference on the battery life, so it would appear that you can add better sealing to ebikes and get away with it.

Is it work putting so gasket sealant on the cover
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 5 лет назад
No, it's not worth putting a sealant on the cover as there is a small, clear bead of silicone already fitted (you have to look hard to see it). Obviously, if the original seal was damaged, then I would use a sealant.

@@Ebikemotorcentre, thanks a lot for the great video!! I'been reading about lots of issues with the right bearing on CX motors (basically bearing exposed to dirt with no protection/sealing at all) but thereis just not enough info on the German forums. Some say it was fixed after 2017. It seams that there is a sealing on your video - could you confirm this was fixed? Many thanks!! Btw. I'm interested in a 2018 Cube Stereo Hybrid 500 SL.

Hi Daniel, Bosch did bring out a dust cover for the main motor bearing and if you use one and grease it regularly it can help. Unfortunately it doesn't help much with water and to be honest the dust and grit still gets past the seal if you ride in dirty conditions. Also, the seal/dust cover does not protect the crankshaft bearings which are also exposed to dirt and water. Hence the reason I started Performance Line Bearings.

Absolutely no idea! Did this about 3 years ago now. We repair hundreds of Bosch units and the bearings generally only fail due to water or dust ingress, and this can happen at any time from 100 miles to 80,000 miles depending on your riding conditions, terrain, washing habits, country climate, how you transport your bike etc.

Man.... Looking at this its almost obvious that bosch and yamaha type motors are being monopolized. They could very well put a hub motor there... But guess those are too easy to repair if they even need repairing - and if you dont cook the magnets and the winding somegow goes, you can change the motor soul with more or less torque while here you are always left with repairs.
