Excellent videos and I will certainly use your services when needed. A couple of questions. 1. What is the white grease used on the gears both steel and nylon/plastic. Is it synthetic lithium of some sort? 2. What's is the big deal with not touching the freewheel? Ive seen the same approach in other videos? 3. (my bonus question) Do you think the use of jetwash is to 'blame' for the water ingress and bearing failures? Once again, great instructive videos and bookmarked your website for future use.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 года назад
You are correct Martin, the Bosch drive grease is a lithium based grease used in the automotive industry but unavailable commertialy. As for number 2, not touching the freewheel is just a sure way of not introducing any grit ot dirt into the clutch bearing. Just remember if you touch it the bearing surface make sure its clean. Number 3, Pressure washers are definitely to blame in some cases, but fording rivers, constant deep puddles, hosing the crank regularly, carrying the bike on a rear mounted car/van rack in the wet without a motor cover, washing the bike on its side etc. etc.

Hello Thanks for the very good video - One problem I haven't answered yet, nowhere: - The part at 4:06 , which is in the freewheel, has hyper-sensitive surfaces, everywhere it is warned not to touch them and in the assembly instructions for the service kit it also says " do not clean"... But what happens if I have wiped it with a clean, lint-free cloth? Possibly soaked with Isoprop to get it nice and clean. The instructions with the "do not clean" only came later with the service kit... Background: Greasing the gears myself and wiping the freewheels dry have only ever brought brief improvements. Now I have the service kit here, still unused, because I'm not sure whether I can the rocket-scientific-hyper-sensitive-surface has not been ruined somehow... If anyone has any experience or ideas about how dangerous this really is beyond "just try it out", I would be very pleased to receive answers. Thanks and best regards
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 5 месяцев назад
Don't worry, you will be fine. The bit to worry about is what grease to use, because that large roller clutch bearing relies on friction to stop it slipping. This friction is gained through the grease, so using high slip, high pressure greases here will not go well. To be honest, if you use it sparingly, you can add a very thin coat of Bosch Drive Unit grease to the surface of the freewheel gear and then slide it into the clutch bearing. If you are fitting a new Bosch service kit, or a new bearing from me, these are both pre-greased and will work perfectly.

There is a silicone seal fitted to the motor cover, so no extra sealant is used. Water gets in through the bearings.

The PCB (printed circuit board / "electronic card") is not available as a spare part. It is also programmed to the angle sensor on the electric motor, so the PCB and the electric motors armature have to be changed as one piece. What is your bike doing exactly? Does it turn on? Any codes? When does the code appear exactly? When you first turn on or when you start to pedal?

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 3 года назад
Where is the squeak coming from? It is unusual for a bearing to squeak, they normally sound rough and rumble / grumble. Is it a pedal maybe? I would remove the chain from the front sprocket and turn the pedals by hand. You should get a better idea if there is any permanent damage or nasty noises. Hi, is there any reason why you don't put grease in the flat surface of the freewheel? another question: could be used a teflon based grease instead of the bosch grease? thanks for your videos!
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 2 года назад
This surface is used for the clutch bearing to grip to. The clutch bearing is greased with its own low pressure grease, so to add Bosch motor grease to this can cause slippage. We have taken Bosch motors apart with 60,000+ Miles (96,560Km), the grease has been perfect and all gears showed very little sign of wear. The other issue can be, any Teflon based grease reaching any clutch bearing will cause failure and this will happen quite quickly with the small clutch bearing. I hope this answers your questions.

So is the wrench symbol on my computer display for Bosch a dummy indicator or does it really mean something? The Bosch manual was of no help. I asked the Trek shop guys- they seamed clueless like they never dealt with that before. I've always noticed a noise on my bosch performance line cx, last couple rides it has become rather loud. Sounds like the main bearing according to your videos. Only in the easier gears on the back. Not in the mid to difficult gears.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 2 года назад
If the shop or factory has set your motor service interval, this "service" spanner (wrench) will be shown. Once the service is done, the dealer should put your bike on diagnostics and reset the mileage or disable the spanner by setting the mileage to zero. (This service does not require the motor to be opened, it's just check the bolts, wire plugs etc.)

Apart from the needle bearings can all the bearings be upgraded to sealed ceramic bearings if the sizes can be matched ? Also is it mainly the bearings failing than the electronics/motor failing ? Can the circuit boards be ultrasonic cleaned in the event of water ingress on the board? Also what material is the free wheeling gear shaft made of and is it a press fit gear on the free wheel shaft/tube ?? I'm new to ebikes and I have a mechanical background and I mainly repair and restore motorbikes and their engines etc but at some point I'll be servicing the bosch gen 3 motor in my e bike .. Great vid, thanks 👍👍
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 2 года назад
Several sizes are bespoke to Bosch, so a size match would not be possible. Fitting ceramic bearings in this application would be a wast of money though. It is not the bearings that are the issue, it is the water or dust. The circuit boards can be ultrasonically cleaned, but bit would mean de soldering them from the electric motor (not quite as easy as it sounds). Also, if you are doing this because of water ingress, it is usually too late and board components will already have failed. On the Gen 2 it's steel and one piece (Gen 3 is stainless and one piece). If you decide to have a go, keep things clean. We see so many motors where contamination has been left inside. There is no oil or filter, so what ever you put or leave in the motor will be trapped in there doing damage for the rest of its short life.

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 2 года назад
Hi, This probably won't be a bearing issue. You need to strip the crankshaft out and ensure all the bearings are still set at the right depth and check the transfer gear cage. This is the aluminium fitting that supports the two transfer gears that take the drive from the freewheel gear to the main crankshaft drive gear. This is not included in a Bosch service kit.

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 2 года назад
9.9 times out of 10, error code 500 is an electronics or component fault. The service kit may only help if you have error 500 once you first start pedalling. The code will not require clearing, it will just sit in the error memory, once you take the error away, the code will no longer show. Clearing the code on diagnostics will not usually unlock the motor.

Cleaned, replaced bearings but still coming up with fault. Bearing kits are not available from Bosch in NZ and they are not happy if you open them up to do the job even if they have rejected a warranty so they refused to help clear the codes or offer any help other than to buy a new motor. @Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 5 лет назад
The “coffee grinder” noise is usually the first sign that the main motor bearing is failing. As your bike is 2018, it should be covered under warranty. As your bearing has failed so soon, this normally points to an issue with water getting into the bearing? This maybe from a deep-water crossing, hosing/pressure washing the bike around the crank area etc. You can normally confirm if it is only the main motor bearing by removing the chain from the front sprocket and turning the pedals. You will hear the bearing while pedalling forward, when you pedal backwards, you are then listening to the crankshaft bearings. Either way, if this is something you want to fix yourself, I would leave the motor in the bike, remove the right hand crank arm and sprocket, remove any plastic motor covers and then remove the right-hand motor cover, you will then be able to see and feel all the bearings and ensure you get what you need. Or, you can send your motor to us for repair. I hope this answers your question?
