Bose Companion 5 repair / teardown 

I just repair my Companion 5 changing the same fuse of the video min 7:23. Thanks marcel.o r. Just take off the fuse and ask for the same one in your local shop and weld the new one. Had a wire electrical problem recently and blew my fuse apparently. Next victim to repair my Brother laser printer... Thanks again for the video.

Hi, My Bose Companion 3 series II stopped working today :( Initially the sound was intermittent and the speakers used to work for few mins until they goes off. Now today it when I tried to turn it on, its not starting up, Control pod does not shows the light in it. Please suggest what should I do? Should I give it to Bose service center? Its 5 year old system and I dont want to invest money in the expensive repair if its a quick fix.

That's very strange. I'm guessing a soldering flux residue from the factory became conductive, and caused the arc, which blew the fuse. Looks like it had to be a very good short circuit, because that fuse was badly blown! I'm amazed it didn't shatter.

This video doesn't prove any repair, because majority of the time its not just a matter of replacing a fuse, something must have caused it to blow in the first place?

Ive had mine for awhile never had a problem and recently i was going to hook up another subwoofer the companion 5 and i did and it worked but a cord for the other subwoofer came unplugged. No big deal i took the back of the companion 5 off while it was playing and when i took the back off all sound just stopped i dont know if a fuse blew or what happened cause it has power just no sound. Any help would be great

I have this model for around 5 year now but now got problem intermittent muted. might be something wrong with the control pod. any help can fix other than buying a replacement for the control pod.

The line in the back lowers my right speaker only when I plug the front where the volume both channels works ok.

What is the amperage of the fuse is it 1.0A or 2.0A?

I have a companion 5 but the sub unit does not show any sign of power when all the cables are plugged into the unit and on the dial I do not see any status indicator light and. Believe it either a blown fuse or a bad transformer does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi, Thanks for the video. My fuse also blew. I took the old fuse out and cannot figure out what exact fuse to get and where to buy it from. I see that it is a 2A 250V. does it matter which 2A 250V I get? Also, if I order the fuse online does it come with the wire on the side, so I can soder it back in? I bought the bose companion 5 system , and it overheated the very first day and the subwoofer stopped working . But the subwoofer wasn't impressive , I had to position it a certain way in a corner under a desk just to get OK sound . If I turned it up full max , bass automatically reduced . I sent the system back to bose 3 times , but all of them behaved the same way , so reducing the bass at full volume must be normal for the companion 5 . I got tired of Bose and every other company out there selling bullshit , so I hand built my own system using Focal speakers and mdf . Audiophiles dream . ..😎

VR1 that close to the mains connector usually indicates a varistor. A varistor is used as a means to clamp over voltage conditions typically by blowing the mains fuse. The burn mark looks like the remnants of the varistor that was in place.

Hi Mr. Marcel, thank you very much for your video, my comp 5 is not working, no sound, control pod amber light and green lights are working fine. I dissembled and checked the power transformer output, I am getting 15-16 Volt Ac , checked Q10 (FQP27P06) S=16 V, G=14.5, D=10.2, verified in the BOSE troubleshooting tips document, these voltages are 21V, 17.3V, 14.6V respectively, Is my power transformer faulty? Q10 tested OK. Kindly anybody can tell me the power transformer details? Transformer sticker details ' BILLION 261276-200 Rev.11 94TS-059 .

Did it work after you fixed the fuse or No sound still?

i use around 110V companion 5 bose and here in philippines uses 220V source which i accidentally plug .Now my bose doesnt work anymore but the control pad is still working. Does that mean i broke the speakers??

Marcel: Interesting video. You are amazing. I picked up a Companion 3, Series II from a thrift store in Los Angeles. I paid $25.00 for the system, but it did not come with a control unit. Is it mandatory to have a control unit to make the system work? My system does not have a USB port, and the control unit uses a round, nine pin port. I appreciate your time. Thank you.

i have a bose companion 5 120 volts and i plug it to 220 volts. the fuse is blown. i already replace a 2A fuse. then i bought a transformer 220 volts step down to 110 volts. i plug the device the control pad is on and green led is avaliable. plug to a computer or cellphone but theres no output sound in my nise speakers. anyone can help tnx

this is the 2nd bose i blew up i think cos need surge protection. shity bose systems should never watse your money on these systems as they r hard to repair. mine turns on but no sound maybe speaker blew up and there r no sreaw to open it up
