This is one of those pedals that you dont quite understand the appeal, until you do

The Blues Driver is underrated. It's been a favorite of mine for a very long time. It's great for stacking distortion. Nice playing, Ola.

This actually really dishes out a Albini style of rock static/fuzz... That upper fizz is hard to get right sometimes and that's solid.

Tbh it didn't chug but damn that tone... I'd rather have this thousand times over the modern metal tone for solos.

I used to run a Tube Screamer into a modded Blues Driver, it got quite chonky

The BD has been one of my secret weapon pedals for a long time. It has such a clean drive stage that it's perfect as a "dirty boost" for getting more distortion out of existing amps without adding other color to the sound too much.

And lo, it came to pass that the blues pedal did chuggeth, and doubters were cast into dereliction and there was a great wailing and gnashing of teeth.

For a blues pedal that thing sounds monstrous :O

Holy shit that Berserk shirt is freaking sweet! Anyways the Blues Driver sounds almost like a pro-distortion, like right on the line to my ears. Either or, hearing all the playing inspired me to get one.

The BD is overlooked sometimes.... it is a VERY versatile pedal. It sounds AMAZING boosting a RAT or or a Muff.

The Blues Driver is my best pedal. For solos, it rounds my high end and makes the sound less sharp for my ears.

I think the in the room sound at 2:40 is pretty great :) It’s a nice clear chug and sounds exactly how a boosted Marshall should sound , perhaps a bit more gain and you’re there👍

Ola, this is almost exactly the setup I've been using for a while - an original 100w JCM800 through a 1960b cabinet with a Blues Driver. Sounds immense with the level up and the gain half way, a really versatile Metal tone! Great review, keep up the good work!

I’m currently taking my Blues Driver out of the drawer and rediscovering it’s killer tone, it sounds good through many amps, even this little solid state Acoustic amp I’m playing. Not metal tone but inspiring. Great video! 😎🤘🏻

A useful mod tip for more chug: The Blues Driver uses two discrete (i.e., not a chip but individual transistors) "op-amp" stages, with one driving the other. The Gain control adjusts the gain of both stages at the same time. In between the first and second gain stage is a network that, when you look at it with a trained eye, you realize it is a Fender amp tonestack, except that the values are fixed rather than having individual treble/mid/bass controls. The classic Fender tonestack uses a low-medium value resistance to ground for the midrange control. Not only does this adjust how much "scoop" there is, but how much signal is passively bled off. If we increase that resistance, not only do we get less scoop, but we also retain more signal, so stage one pushes stage 2 harder. The bleedoff resistor is the only 15k resistor on the board. If it's a standard carbon type, the colour code will be brown-green-ornage. If it's a 1% metal film type, it will be brown-green-red. Use your soldering iron to lift either end and you'll get more chug than you can imagine. On my own build, I have a 3-position toggle that gets me 15k, 40k or 120k. So roughly 3x increase with each position. The 40k setting is noticeably louder and "thicker" than 15k, and 120k has more muscle than you can imagine from a BD-2, with just a hint, a soupçon, of scoop.

For an overdrive pedal, it sure has massive amounts of gain and sounds great as a distortion unit on its own with clean amp settings.

That little bit you played with the Marshall JCM 800 nearly clean by itself sounded amazing! There’s my tone. Please demonstrate more of that particular amp set up. PS: I have a question. Do you think if I got that amp in a 2/12 combo it would sound the same with the same Eminence speakers? Thanks!

I’ve been using the BD-2w in the Green channel of my 5150 Iconic combo. I can set the overall sound pretty gainy, and still have huge control with the volume knob. It’s a great way to restrain the amp’s high end, without losing any sustain.

Super pedal. I use it primarily as a boost (with gain at 0) for clean, and for blues (obviously), but I've tried it a few times as an OD into my Katana amp for metal tones, and it's surprisingly good. Tightens up the middle nicely and adds good bark.

I have a blues driver! I love that guy! I run a big muff into a mxr dookie pedal into the blues driver and I run the blues driver with as little gain as possible and use it more for a boost pedal and it works perfectly.

I think you need to buy 1959 les paul from the former guitar tech from thin lizzy, and a dumbell amplifier that had it's tubes modified by the guitar tech from skynyrd and spend 15,000 us dollars then try to make it chugg. Then maybe it still won't chug

Did it chug? Did it matter? That tone was awesome. The room mic sounded unreal as well. Nicely done dude!

It shines on its own way. I've had some BD-2s, used them as an OD and never got a tone that suits me. I think it adds too much low-end, and doesn't boost the mid-hi bite I expect from an OD. But it's a great pedal, I've listened to a lot of guitar players that get some really cool tones of it.

The boss blues driver is my favourite ever distortion.

I have the donner mini blues drive. Its an exact remake and it chugs. I like it for doomy sabbathy chugs

BD-2+ds-1 or sd-1 into a breaking up amp+GE-7 into the effects loop = tone heaven.

Kudos on the Guts shirt! I've actually been using a blues driver teamed up with an OD and EQ into a Bugera 6262 for some surprisingly chunky black metal tones!

Been using the bd-2 for years and it's a good OD for boosting a pushed amp, just like a tubescreamer and you can get nice british tones from a clean amp. What's cool about is also that if you set the gain on max it gets into fuzz territory, so a nice option for going doom. it's a nice versatile OD and good value. Also it's pretty easy to add a phat-mod like Robert Keeley did, which just adds a switch for a better low mid and bass response. Brian Wampler also did 2 mods on the pedal, tweed mod and brent-mason mod. The Wampler stuff is a bit more difficult to do but fun stuff, if you're into that sort of thing.

Blues driver has a shocking amount of distortion for the name. I think the problem is the pickups in Solar making it sound kinda funny in the higher frequencies. Maybe not the perfect fit for the jcm800 either as you said. But it makes pretty damn solid distortion sound in the right setup. Perhaps turning the tone down would also help, I feel like tone up has some uncomfortable sizzle. It's not really a chugger per se, but the circuit attempted to copy an amp drive turned loud and did that well. Has great midrange and preserves some "transparency" with high gain settings, stacks great with other drives. You should try it with something like tube screamer, treat it like amp gain stage. Would be fun to see if Keeley modded blues driver fit this setup better.

Can you possibly try it with the JCM into an attenuator so you can actually crank it? It'll sound even more amazing What settings was the JCM set to?

Blues driver is great for driving an already crunchy/slightly distorting amp into some proper nice gainy sounds. On its own and cranking the gain on it and it fuzzes out like so. Mainly to do with how the circuit is designed. It's like a nastier tube screamer.

I love the Blues Driver, and I'm not exactly a metal player, so I think that you are getting an incredible rock sound here, but not exactly serious metal chug. I think metal people might be like oh that doesn't really chug. I get that. But it's quite enough chug for me as a rock player. Nice video series, it's a lot of fun!
