They may look very similar, but these two pedals are worlds apart. Whereas the best-selling CS-3 is an analog compressor, the next-generation CP-1X is powered by Boss’s state-of-the-art multi-dimension processing, or MDP, digital processor. Cosmetically, these new X range of pedals are very similar to every other Boss pedal. They’ve got the same apocalypse proof housing, come supplied with a 5 year warranty and they run off a 9v battery or optional power supply…but the big giveaway that there’s something special about them is the shiny control plate and chrome knobs. The CP-1X also has a handy LED compression meter so you can easily see the amount of gain reduction whilst playing. There’s controls for output volume, compression level, attack and ratio. Even though it’s really simple to use, as you’re tweaking each of these knobs you’re actually controlling multiple, interlocking parameters at once, enabling a wide range of tone shaping with minimal effort. And because it’s digital, it greatly reduces noise, a common problem for many analog compressors.
