In this episode I compare the great Boss DM2w Analog Delay with the acclaimed and super affordable copy by Behringer: The VD400.
Two analog delays with very different price points compared side by side. Th Boss DM2w is one of my favorite Delay pedals out there and the Behringer VD400 claims to be an exact copy, so I'm very curious to see how it holds on side by side with the original.
Leave your comment about the comparison. is the Boss worth the extra money you have to pay for it?

Friend, I've been using the VD 400 for over 8 years. This is really the cheapest pedal, but its capabilities are not inferior to the top models. I play blues rock and this pedal is 200% good. As they say in Russia. Cheap and cheerful! In other words Low price Great opportunities

Great video, I bought the Boss DM2 and I remeber watching your video where you compare it with the boss digital delay DD3, I loved watching it just after buying my Boss DM2 cause I got a few nice settings from you, and today same thing, thank you, greetings from Mallorca, Spain ;)

vd400 has been on my board for around 10 years now. it is just good, doing the job. never did anything break on that pedal. payed 10 euros used for it. good investment. last year bought the behringer delay machine, which is also very good.

HI Budda, Thanks for this video. I took your advice from another video and bought the VD400. I sold my Boss DM2w earlier because I wasn't using it for more than a “set and forget” delay and you recommended the Behringer VD400. I am happy with the VD400 but I find that the Boss is easier to dial in than the Behringer. The knobs on the Behringer go past their sweet spot so easily but for the price and my purpose I’m happy with it. I may go back to DM2w later. If there’s a problem with the VD400 it would be difficulty in dialling in. But you seem to find it OK in the video. Thanks.

I think because I'm a singer I need to go with a digital delay so that it mimics the sound almost perfectly whereas a guitar player would not want that because it's a feel type of thing I'm just trying to make my voice seem more full

My first pedal I bought was a tc electronic echo brain which is based on the vd400 and it does sound great, and at that price point it's a must have. Regarding the boss pedal. A while back I saw a video that pointed out that the waza version has a different bucket brigade circuit that has a spike in the leading edge of the delay which makes for a particular tone on that pedal. Let me see if I can find the video.

In his quest to find a ad900 equivalent he reviews many pedals and makes some nice signal comparisons that clearly illustrated the difference in sounds. Hope you enjoy it. Saludos!

I liked the thing you played at the intro. Is that something your improvised, wrote, or someone else's piece, and where can i find it? I just bought the behringer delay for $25 CAN off amazon, which is about 16 euros. It sounds nice. For this money you might as well have one. Personally, i wouldn't pay a lot for the type of delay given the delays that are coming out from brands like strymon. If I was going to pay hundreds, id keep saving and buy the el capistan or timeline.

Hi Budda! I have TC hall of fame 2 and Behringer digital reverb. Guess witch is much better sounding. Yes. The HOF sounds so weak and metallic. The Behringer sounds warmer more powerful. Much much better. It is weird. I have the big Dunlop Hendrix fuss face and the original hex Big Muff. I use Behringer super fuzz 300 in stead. It has 2 great fuzzes and third option is one of the best boost ever. It is amazing.

I hear a lot of guitarists say, man I want a pedal that makes me sound like David gilmour, and people go, oh yeah get a fancy digital delay but NO , just get a simple analog delay, like these ones, you can nail the gilmour stuff especially the early stuff.

Strongly disagree. I fact, analog delay is the absolutely worst you can pick for early Pink Floyd stuff. He used an Echorec back then, which rolls off low frequencies a lot, making a thin metallic delay. Analog is the opposite, it rolls off high frequencies to make a warm delay. On top of that the Echorec has a preamp and the swell option for those cathedral almost reverb like tones. Analog also lack the natural modulation of an Echorec. And if you want modern Gilmour, digital IS the way to go, since you need those really long delay times that analog generally doesn't have available. Even for early Gilmour, a "fancy" digital is probably better than analog, since you might have some EQ (being a "fancy" model) so you can lower the bass and keep the treble in repeats like the echorec. And digital often has options for some modulation on the repeats to further give that early Gilmour sound.

Thank you for your input but trusts not totally correct. The Deluxe man has modulation, rolls off the bass and it’s analog. The Jam pedals delay Llama also rolls off the lows and its analog. It depends on the delay.

@@BuddaGuedes exactly budda! If you listen carefully to what you hear in Buddas video, or demo a boss dm2w yourself, you will quickly realise that gilmour sounds are definitely in here! The swell/reverb sound is one of the main parts of the boss analog sound and is much more convincing than other false echorec pedals on the market, for example the catalinbread, believe me I had tried dozens of delay pedals. Let your ears do the thinking and not your eyes!

@@pyropedals5553 That's just wrong. There is no swell in any analog delay pedals I know of. By swell I refer to the Echorec swell, a specific function. It is simply not something a DM-2 or the likes can do. I love my DM-2, but it's not the Gilmour sound, it's the opposite. Dark and warm, but that's not the early Gilmour sound. And I do let my ears do the thinking, that's exactly why I know a DM-2 is nothing like what Gilmour used.

As of summer 2024, the VD400 is selling on Amazon for $29, and the DM2w is $159. Personally, I think you're crazy if you buy the latter......

I have several delays...line 6. memory Man / boy, and some awesome digital delays (GFI Tempus). Would you say there's still some things that this behringer pedal can do that these others I listed can't? Would it still be worth buying? for example, for oscillation

It’s not better than what you have. But it’s ridiculously inexpensive for how great it sounds. So if you’re thinking on getting another delay this is a great option

Pyro Pedals please watch JHS video about Behringer. I own 3 Behringer pedals and they are amazing. Not for the price. Just amazing. Behringer own TC electronic and makes the parts for all the Industry.

I've used both of these pedals. The DM-2w is the winner. Longer delay time option and the classic BOSS case is why. Behringer makes great budget pedals yes, but when you're trying to keep your board uniform and organized, that power input port on the side really puts strikes against it.

THere is a trim pot inside the VD to make the more than 2x longer (or shorter if ya want)

@@BuddaGuedes NP. Its the trim on the extreme left side. Sometimes maxing it out introduces some noise (sometimes not) and people have said that one of the other 2 trim pots ,not sure which, adjusted just a bit helps get rid of it if it is an issue .

I’m just a home guitarist so it’s not like my pedals get knocked around..but 3 years of owning an entire behringer pedalboard and I haven’t had a single one fail or any of the plastics break.

It's ok. you are not the first one to size up a Boss to one of those cheap plastic pedals and try to justify paying half of your pay check on metal boxes. I do it every time I get one in my jam room
