Boss FZ3 - Most underrated fuzz pedal ever? 

For sure. I was looking for an overdrive pedal for my bass and rather than going for that expensive trendy finish brand I bought an used ODB3 for 60 bucks. After 15 minutes I got very usable tones. I guess that it's underrated because it's Boss and it could be seen as a "bass players DS1"..but it it's good enough for Flea...

Just buy a Behringer super fuzz. It's an exact copy of this boss fuzz, basically, but only costs £20. I've got some very expensive fuzz pedals, all sorts of things like deluxe big muffs, and honestly the behringer fuzz is the best fuzz pedal I ever used, and it's also the cheapest one I ever used, so yeah. Value for money for sure

@@duffman18 The Behringer Super Fuzz is a clone of the Boss FZ-2 and the FZ-2 is a clone of the Univox Super Fuzz. But Behringer did also make a clone of the Bozz FZ-3 and it's called Behringer Ultra Fuzz...but unfortunately it is out of production.

It's an unusual effect for Boss but one that certainly holds up to other, more expensive fuzz pedals. Mind though that this not a Big Muff but more a vintage style Fuzz Face meets Tone Bender.

Thanks! It can get pretty nasty sounding with the tone past noon but it depends on the pickups and amp too.

I used the same settings throughout. Just adjusting the guitar volume for more/less gain. Volume 3:00, tone 10:00 and gain a hair roll off from full.

It's a Fender Performer. A hybrid with vintage body and pickups and a more modern neck profile. One of those guitars that I totally fell in love with when I tried it in the store. Bought it last summer.

Indeed. I think that a lot of people are using Boss pedals the wrong way. At least the overdrive pedals. A lot of them were never meant to be used with super clean amps.

The TC Electronic Rusty Fuzz is a very close clone.

I fell in love the the MT2 as soon as i tried it i had t buy it. Every overdrive, distortion and fuzz sound i needed. I brought it home and found it very harsh, but I WAS using a Laney AOR30! I should just have stuck it into the effect loop to be fair. I modified it about 15 years later because I refused to sell it but couldnt get rid of the wasps in a jamjar sound. It became a great OD/distortion. Turned my Sound City into a Marshall! LOL. I sold it to fund buying a Guv'nor and kind of regret it.

Geoff Bell after my Sovtek Big Muff, it’s the oldest pedal I have (made in 1995, as per Boss). I had almost the same experience with my Big Muff- I was young, saw all the cool bands using them, got one and hated it. Part of it was I had everything dimed out. The other part is the bands I was trying to emulate were using Op Amp Muffs or Rams Heads. Everyone makes the “hornets in a can” joke, and there’s definitely some truth to it; but that’s usually because it’s 1) not dialed in right, or 2) not paired with the right amp. I use it with a Marshall and can get what I want out of it pretty quickly. It seems to play nice with other pedals too. I think Gilmour had its predecessor on his rig, and may have had a Metal Zone, though who knows if he really used it. There’s still plenty out there, and they’re still pretty inexpensive used.

gilmourish RIIS I’ve been meaning to try that pedal, and I’m very curious about the Tube Pilot, which looks like a Tube Driver missing several dials. Hopefully when things get back to normal I’ll get a chance to play with them!

yes 13:00 is 1:00, 14:00 is 2:00, 15:00 is 3:00 and so on. It's because he is Norwegian, and we use that system!

No it doesn’t. Silicon transistors rarely do. Germanium transistors are much more dynamic and responsive but considerably more moody as well.

rustisamust check out the did Carcosa, silicon and cleans incredibly well! Also vicious fuzz tones!

Dude I have a DS-2 and a FZ-3 and other BOSS pedals in my chain and I have 0 tone loss... No idea why ppl say they lose tone with BOSS pedals.

@@Feede88 I'm happy for you Fede :) - but many Boss pedals are infamous for tone suck due to poor quality buffers they often use. Myself and many 1000s more have had problems with Boss overdrive/distortion pedals.

@@Feede88 It only happens when you run more than 4 or 5 in a chain, and don't use a true bypass switcher or something to get you that high and low end back, like the MI Boost 'n Buff. Yes, I know adding an input buffer seems counter-intuitive but it's a different kind of buffer to those found in Boss pedals and, with the mild full-range boost, you get that "sparkle" back. A Klon type pedal does the same thing.

I'd say it's perhaps closer to a Tone Bender. I haven't studied the circuit but there's a lot more transistors compared to a FF. The Rusty Fuzz is based on the FZ3. They're very similar. The Rusty has a tad less gain and a slightly darker character.

Gilmour used a Boss Heavy Metal Distortion pedal for the intro, but then again this is Gilmour, whatever pedal he uses, he makes it sound good

The HM2 alone sound like shit but he blended it with different pre-amps at different points from About Face (1984) to Momentary (1987). I love those smooth distortion tones he gets it with!

Thanks! You can definitely use the Green Russian for fuzz although there is a distinct difference between a Big Muff and a traditional fuzz.

Ha ha, well I guess fuzz is one of those effects that you either love or hate. They can be tricky to use because they depend so much on the amp and they can react horribly to other pedals that you have in the chain. We often have Hendrix' tones in mind when it comes to fuzz and the only way to really get those huge smooth tones, is to use loud Marshall Plexis, as few pedals as possible and they need to be true bypass.

Fair enough. Perhaps I made a bad recording but fuzz pedals are considerably brighter and fuzzier compared to a Big Muff or distortion. Love it or hate it.
