i love how easy that software looks, very much like a deep dive in the GR55 for building your tones. This with a GT pedal and you're a for away! Nice playing on all the promo stuff dude, love your work! :)
It would be great if Roland made an optional pickup with internal electronics. I've owned quite a few of the Roland/Boss guitar synths and VG products at one time or another. The external control box always kind of bothered me. I felt that I had to be extra careful that so I didn't snag the pickup wire on something. The control box always looked a little clunky hanging on the front of the guitar. I'll have to say that the sounds in your demo are the most expressive guitar synth patches I've ever heard. Hats off to the folks at Roland.
Having just been introduced to this on another channel, this is kind of what I'd like to see; a bigger sound demo. Like to see a more expressive solo brass/woodwind instrument like sax or trumpet.
Thanks for the video - great as always! I wonder what's the main difference between this synth and the SY1000, is this intended to be the compact version of the SY1000?
No... both are totally different. The SY-1000 is a subtractive synth that has osc synth, gr-300 and dynamic synth and you build your sounds from different parameters like LFO, filter etc.. Also sy-1000 has guitar / bass and other instrument modelling which isn't inside GM-800. The GM-800 is more like GR-55 that uses PCM (pulse code modulation) synthesis etc.
Boss devices sound so thin like sound is coming from far far away. The sounds are not present at all. Is it because whole bunch of overtones are missing in each notes. Like there in no high end and low ends at all. People call it compressed sound but i dont understand if compressed sound sound like this.
Sounds very good! Tracking seems good here, hope tracking is just like this if i purchase. The tracking on the GR-55 was so bad I could not play it in public. Ghost notes every time I practice, really. The GR-1 had better tracking than the GR-55!
hi alex, thank you so much for responding. i am an ancient member of the midi guitar community-i used to do clinics for the old shadow gtm6 back in the 80s. am i correct in thinking that i have seen you playing an rmc equipped guitar with roland gr units? i still use the gr 33 because the newer versions had some kind of issue with a low frequency interference with piezo type pickups. i am hoping that this new unit will have solved this issue. pardon my long worded response. cheers from texas. Chris Carrington
How would you recommend using this live? Direct to PA? Can't imagine a tube amp would pair well with this, maybe a super clean thing like a Fender Twin.
Curious too since the Andertons video said the bass pickup works with 4, 5 and 6 string basses so would this mean, 6, 7 and 8 string guitars would work?
Hi Alex ! You are always great !! I have a question: is it possible to plug a usb keyboard into the usb "memory" socket and play the gm-800 sounds by that keyboard ?
I wonder if Pat Metheny will have to hold on to his 50+ years old GR-300 unit forever, or Roland produces a box that convinces him to switch? What do you think?
No Normal Guitar In and Out. So I'm Out........Very Bad BOSS, Come On! The Fishman Triple Play is quite old now and adding a Guitar signal to a wireless unit would make you a winner Boss...You missed your opportunity.....always something missing on Roland/Boss Products.......to add it to the next product.....I will wait for that one....
@@AlexHutchingsMusic I’m interested in some of the duel sounds you were getting too. Does it have a looper? And it looks like it can apply sounds to certain frequencies so the bass notes for eg can have different treatment to the higher strings, if I’m reading that right
What is needed is a 200 series format that we can load 20 presets of our own choosing from the cloud (included in the price of the pedal) that can be used without any GK pickup just our guitar. no whacky car crash sounds or useless scatting just the ones we select. we dont need 1200 tones that we will never be able to incorporate into any song. just what we want, not what is decided for us. Then add a sequencer.
Most of those sounds can be programed on the GR-55 and it is a very old unit. What I want is better tracking of fast notes with NO glitch's. But you were very much on the mellow lay back side in this demo. Not the Alex I see most often melting our brains with high velocity pyrotechnics. I would say you were careful not to have this unit show the downside of these types of units. I have had my GR-55 for about two years now. I have watched hundreds of videos on how to fix the glitch's. But most of the patches remain unusable except for very slow background fill like the sounds on this demo... If anyone reading this has found a way to get better tracking on their GR-55, Please pass it along to me and others.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ldap-eVdGHY.html I can improvise with lots of notes, and it gets it all. I just tweaked it right before the sensitivity is too much and removed the units ability of picking up palm muting strings etc.
@LameGuitar I too noticed the same. The reason we notice, is because we've had the Roland guitar synths over the years to find the same result of miss-tracking. I was hoping to hear some strumming on the piano (even if not always realistic, it demonstrates how well or otherwise the tracking is). When you see the playing that avoids that, it really tells the story. JamStick Studio tried that too (as many others) and then same thing again - poor tracking on multiple notes, not simply singular notes. You just know if it could do it, that would be the fist thing shown off.
I would point out that Alex did not edit the performance to remove any glitches… he edited himself in performance… kinda like curbing his enthusiasm:-) I saw John McLaughlin with Shakti a few weeks ago and he was playing guitar with some synth throughout and I was blown away with the musical results he achieved! He was as always picking every note on a PRS with a FTP Connect and some kind of MBP with Logic firing one soft synth at a time. His technique was flawless and I am sure that his guitar setup and Fishman hex pickup were dialed in to the closest thing to perfection that exists. I did learn that Fishman has gone to great lengths to reduce crosstalk in their hex PuP with vacuum wax potting ‘, epoxy, magnetic field and other aspects of the physical PuP:-) I have been playing guitar synth since the days of the IVL Pitchrider and I am still on the quest of the perfect guitar/synth rig! After 40 years + a lot has changed in the technology but the basic physics of our tone quest have not changed:-) However I keep trying and buying:-) Good luck fellow guitar/synth nerds!! Al
Dude this is great. I'm totally into electronic music like lofi, downtempo and synthwave...a guitarist in a keyboard player's world. This would fix all my problems! Just gotta work out that price tag...
Please Alex, tell your Japanse friends to make a SY-500. I really like my SY-300 but it’s way to big for a compact pedalboard. Also like the SY-300 it should have a send but now with a S T E R E O return! Would be nice. By the way, the GM-800 sounds as my JV-1080 from the nineties.
Excited for this! Just not excited for a different pickup system. I dont understand why that was a necessary move, i guess? Yes i know theres a conversion box, but still thats a separate cost, power supply, and set of cords to manage. I'd be happy to buy the separate box if it had features like ABY splitting between existing roland GK enabled systems though. Now I have to figure out if I want to get the new pickup and have two guitars "modified" or keep the current guitar with GK-13 and have a box manage the conversion. Im excited either way, the sounds are great from the demos.
Have to say Alex they all sound great mate. Looking forward to seeing and hearing more on the. Happy Days. All the best from the Lake District👍👍🎶🎶🎶🎶😎😎😎😎
The new serial GKC seems way more sturdy and reliable than old GKCs with its TRS jacks. Now let's hope for a new VG99 with AIRD modelled guitar models (if that's even possible at all) and hope that it wouldn't come out in 10 years from now... I am mostly excited with the new GK5 and serial GK cable atm. Gigging as I am, after my VG88 kicked the bucket, I went for a while with a GR55 but the lack of Guitar in made me go for a GP10 which I still use. Let's hope for an equivalent guitar oriented multifx processor with the new pickup input. Like a GP800 for example to go with the new naming scheme.
Hello friend, I'm a grs lover, I have the gr-55, gr-33 and gr-20, I'm thinking about purchasing the gm-800, but I have some doubts. From your point of view, has it improved the issues of ghost notes and latency in relation to the grs?
Can BOSS GM-800 output these sounds without additional hardware? (Excluding obvious output device :D) Like do you have specialized pickups or any other hardware in your setup?
All I am looking for is GK-3 based solution that controls a polyphonic synthesizer without glitches (pitch to glitch). I tried everything and I am sick of the glitches. If boss had such a pedal/processor, that houses classic synthesizers such as DX7/Oberheim etc and you can edit all the oscillators/voices/filters/VCO's it would be great. This GM-800 seems to be just another preset noise box. Does Boss somehow have such a product that mimics real synthesizers one can and edit at will?. A different synth engine per string would be fantastic.
If you can do some tapping licks I'd be sold. But I highly doubt it will even track any quick tapping licks I know synth patches. I owned the little $200 white boss synth pedal and got rid of it within a week was very disappointed with the poor tracking
A few days ago I bought a gr 55 and to my great surprise at the end of the manual it says that it may contain products that cause cancer. Have you read that too???
hi alex, i’m a huge fan of yours for many years! i’m also a midi guitarist using the rmc box for nylon strings. do you thing there will be any extra tracking lag/issues when using the 13 pin converter box to the new TRS format. thank you sir!
Thanks mate. Re the GK-3 question. Absolutely not, it works extremely well with the conversion box. In fact I spent most of my time using that method in my sound creation process. Cheers for now 👍🙏🎸
Hey Alex, I haven’t seen much sustain (Boss calls this Hold 1 if I’ve read it correctly in the manual - CC#64) or sostenuto examples which I would expect could make playing piano and other keys patches easier on guitar, more like I would play piano. If I connect a (piano) sustain pedal, expression pedal or sustain pedal (pianist use this for half pedaling among others) which allows all values between 0-127 to the expression inputs, could I then send the CC64 for sustain and would that work on the patches?
You know what, I've not as yet because it's been a 'secret' until this week but I've itching to use it. I have a gig tonight actually might just take it. I've spent so long not being able to I forgot that now I suddenly can. Very exciting Thanks for reminding me.... All the best 👍🙏🎸
Im so mad at boss. A few months back i bought a boss sy-1000 synthesizer(and also the synth pickup) thinking it could do what this does. I was 100% wrong. No only that, but they give that unit ZERO attention. It needs to be discontinued. A couple trades later i got a used gt1000, but i still took a huge loss... and now this comes out? BASTARDS.
Not BOSS fault you didn't look into the unit more and figure out that it didn't do this. That is your own fault. However SY-1000 is a super amazing machine that can do many cool synth stuff and guitar / bass stuff etc.. And it has gt-1000 effects and amps. So you traded something more powerful and something that already had GT-1000 stuff in it for a gt-1000....
Salut ma Numesc Chirita Mitica si as vrea sa stiu daca am latenta cu el as vrea sa l folosesc ca interfata midi eu folosesc roland gi 20 si am latenta multumesc mult astept raspuns👍👍👍
A beautiful demonstration of the new onboard processing power. I noticed a new Bass pickup, but are there any bass-specific sounds, or an add-on pack for us bassists? I have 2 basses with 13 pins out and a 14yr old VB99-vbass which needs serious updating
So my guitars are reduced to a midi stringboard. How to acces my GT-1000core? Two cables? Dear Alex, what is your solution? Can we expect an update so the GK-out could be selected as a normal guitar signal output?
Does this work seamlessly with other guitar pedals? For example could I put this I a chain with a looper and delay pedals? I am just worried as it has a special pickup etc. Thank you for your help, I am quite new to guitar synths!
