I traded one of my spare Yamaha THR10 amps (I had two) for a Boss Katana-50 MkII. It was quick and easy to find a metal rhythm tone I liked, so I recorded a quick sound test video. I look forward to exploring this amp further, and testing different recording methods.
Settings are shown at the beginning and end of the video. Even on 0.5W mode, the amp is plenty loud for the room.
The song I'm playing is Iron Savior - Battering Ram.
Guitar → Katana-50 MkII → Camera audio
Video shot with Motorola G7 Power front camera.
Video assembled in OpenShot Video Editor.
Guitar: 1998 Jackson SHS1 Shannon Soloist. Bridge pickup: APC (Adder Plus Corporation) Persuader Lead humbucker. Only the bridge pickup was used to record this video. I keep this guitar tuned to standard and it matches the original Iron Savior recording.

So Ive been thinking on getting the Thr30ii but its $500. I want a practice amp, I had a THR10 and I loved it cause it was there next to my bed so I practiced a lot. I want a practice amp and also an amp that can allow me record in good quality. I also have a Marshall Half stack that I use to play live with my band but sometimes I have some acoustic Duet shows and I cant use the Marshall since its too loud so I was thinking Katana would be great, but the Thr30ii has line outs so that takes me to the confusion again. Which amp would you recomend?? It will be my practice and recording amp but also could be my low volume gigs' amp.
@axeltune2128
@axeltune2128 2 года назад
I haven't tried the Katana in a gig/jam setting but I think it would be well suited for that. IE - THR for home practice and recording, your half stack where you need volume and power, and the Katana would bridge the gap and even overlap some of the functions of the THR and half stack maybe depending on context. I'm purely a home player so the THR is the tool I use for that need.

So what booster setting are you using? Because I see a green light there, but the knob is turned off :o
@axeltune2128
@axeltune2128 3 года назад
I was using the yellow-light booster, not the green one. The knob is a dual stacked knob; the bottom knob is on part of the way for the yellow boost, while the top knob is off. Hope that helps! :)

Amazing, but how did you remove the amps buzzing and hissing? When I put mine in crunch/lead/brown or add gain/booster it hisses very loudly
@axeltune2128
@axeltune2128 3 года назад
I will admit that it's a noisy amp at high gain settings, especially with a booster engaged. I didn't do anything special to remove the amp noise, aside from simply relying on technique, trying to mute (using my hands) where possible. I am told that connecting the amp to a computer via USB cable allows accessing hidden features such as a noise gate, which is exactly what we want. However, I haven't gotten around to exploring this yet.
@derminator95
@derminator95 3 года назад
@@axeltune2128 Thanks. Is this normal for amps to be that noisy or is it only the katana that does that? Or are other amps (such as Yamaha THR10) much quieter on high gain settings and with boosters engaged compared to the katana??
@axeltune2128
@axeltune2128 3 года назад
@@derminator95 Some amps are inherently noisy. The THR can be noisy with high gain too (see my first video posted with it where I play The Trooper by Iron Maiden and listen to the string noise that I failed to dampen with my hands) so I primarily play it using the THR Editor software which has a noise gate feature. The THR doesn't have an on-board booster feature nor does the THR Editor software :)

Sounds amazing! Does it sound as good at a level you can speak to someone else? Like bedroom practice level? or is the THR10/THR30 better for that purpose?
@axeltune2128
@axeltune2128 3 года назад
With the settings seen in the video, the volume "in the room" is at a level where I can still talk comfortably over the amp without having to shout. You'll notice the Amplifier Volume knob on the left is at between 1-2 o' clock and the Master Volume knob on the right is between 11-12 o' clock. So there is plenty of leeway to go up and down in loudness at the 0.5W mode. Even at whisper-level volumes, it sounds pretty consistent! Even at 25W and 50W modes, you can still get whisper-level volumes but the tone doesn't seem to sound as "full" or "pushed" like the 0.5W mode cranked up a bit. And of course, the Yamaha THR amps are also capable of great tones at very low volumes.

@axeltune2128

@@luisgarciaalanis I think it depends on the situation. If you need to perform live, the Katana is the better choice. The THR is meant as a "desktop amp", which is very suitable for me since I almost always play guitar when sitting at my computer.

The katana 50 by a LANDSLIDE! The crush 35 sounds kinda like a 10 watt practice amp honestly. It sounds a bit thin and even the drive channel is voiced weird. I'd DEFINITELY go with the katana. Although, the orange crush 60 is FANTASTIC and sounds wonderful! I'd still go with the katana personally.

@daghetto101
@daghetto101 2 года назад
I don't know about the 35rt sounding like a 10 watt amp or sounding thin. LMAO. I have the 35rt. I bought it since I can't use my heads and cabs in my new place. I bought it online since it caught my eye and can be a practice amp. The moment it arrived and tried it, it's freaking loud. Not enough as my practice amp. So I settled with the Orange Crush 12. But I still kept my 35. It sounds good. Very good amp plus the effects loop in there is pretty useful. Can't go wrong with it. It can be played with a drummer and can do gigs with it. Best amplifier for the budget. After rocking and loving my 35rt for 3 years, I bought a Katana 100 as a main gigging amp. My Heads and Cabs are a drag when travelling. Katana 100 is just as good as everyone reviewed it. Love it. Verdict. Orange 35rt is loud, can take pedals well and overall sounds great. Is it on par/equal with the Katana? Yes it is. But both of them pales in comparison with my H&K's, Marshalls and Blackstar heads. Orange Crush, Katana and Roland Jazz Chorus are the best Solid State amps. Can't live without them.
@daghetto101
@daghetto101 2 года назад
Tho I would take the 35RT over Katana 50 because of the effects loop. Katana 100 over 35rt because it has more power. But like I said, you can't go wrong with 35RT. Get them both if you like!
