The legendary Brian Blessed, exclusively reveals how he tried to warn George Lucas about Jar Jar Binks during filming for The Phantom Menace. Brian played chief Gungan Boss Nass in the Star Wars prequels. He also talks about his friend Alec Guinness and what he REALLY thought about appearing in Star Wars as the original Obi-Wan Kenobi.

I saw an interview with Guiness once. HE was more annoyed at being asked to say "May the Force Be With You" all the time but he seemed to be happy with the movies and their then freshness.

Was about to say the same. The impression I got was that Guinness did like the films themselves (after all, he agreed to make cameos in EMPIRE and JEDI) and said he liked the mythology and messages of them. What he disliked was being solely associated with that role all the time, with many fans constantly hounding him and completely ignoring the rest of his body of work. It's a shame because Guinness was a great actor who did so many classic films and was great at both comedy and drama. Check out OUR MAN IN HAVANA, CROMWELL, HITLER: THE LAST TEN DAYS, MURDER BY DEATH, and of course, almost every single David Lean film to see what a great actor her was.

Guinness said the films were joyful escapism but 'people shouldn't read too much into it'. He liked the fact there wasn't any crude nastiness about them and were technically brilliant. Later, by the mid-80s, he was annoyed and weary with people persistently coming up to Guinness and pushing him to say Star Wars lines when he felt he left those movies behind.

Yes, that was pretty much it, but he also tried to masquerade it as some kind of social issue and ''deep concern'' for the future generation, which was a bit hypocritical, when the fact that some people remembered him ONLY as Obi-Wan was more than enough to justify his anger. Seriously, anyone whose knowledge of movies extends farther than 1980s would understand his beef with Star Wars. They are great films, and I am a huge fan, but I still feel it is insulting to the man's talent and artistic achievements that, for so many- TOO many people, he is just ''Obi-Wan Kneobi''!

^ True! I actually like the character of Jar Jar after familiarizing myself with Ahmed Best. Guy is awesome and is genuinely attached to his characer. Also people who say Jake Lloyd acted badly, he was GOD LEVEL compared to other kids who were auditioned for the role.

Even as an American, Brian Blessed has been one of my favorite actors since I was a kid. I remember watching Flash Gordon when it came out, I think I was about 8-9, and the movie was awful, but he was awesome.

All of the noises and from the Naboo were bad. If he had just said the first part like he did without the clicking and head shaking it would have been fine. But it ended up bad. Same with Jar Jar, it wasn't that noises got in the way of dialogue it was how goofy his character was in general including noises and his speech. The look of him would have been fine, but the over the top attempt at physical comedy in the middle of a Space Opera didn't work. The way he even walked was odd, And the voice that George picked for the actor to use was terrible.

The 'foolishness' was very much intended and part of the twist reveal that never happened due to impositional expectations of fans. Which arguably made the rest of the prequels 'out of place' imo.

The real problem with Jar-Jar Binks was his unnecessarily big screen time, and disrupting the flow of the film. As a bit more than a semi-sidekick he might have worked. The end result pretty much ruined the film.

Jar Jar would’ve been fine as a small character we see for about 5 minutes spread across the movie. It went to hell when George decided to make him a main character and in 80% of the damn movie. Also unlike Chewie friggin Jar Jar had dialogue pretty much every scene.

I like Brian Blessed but his performance as Boss Nass was terrible, those noises and weird shit he does totally pulls me out of the film. Luckily for him there were worse characters and performances so no one talks about him lol

That all depends on your opinion, personally I'm of the opinion that something that attempts to be different but fails at being good is better than something that makes a half decent job at copying old material.

PsychoBensTV yh but come on let's not pretend that the prequels were so original. The same basic story we've seen before. 'The Chosen One', good vs evil, master vs student, war..... I don't love Force Awakens and understand why people hate it, I just think it was well shot, well acted, didn't have terrible dialogue, I liked some characters, no one annoyed me, good blend of practical and visual effects.

But the revised story plot in The Phantom Menace is deliberate to show connections with Anakin and Luke. Plus it didn't diminish the original trilogy. Why would you care about the defeat of the Empire in Return of the Jedi if you know they're back shortly as the 'First Order'? How can you take the bad guys and a Death Star seriously when they're so easily destroyed - as done THREE times? Palpatine has been replaced by Snoke. Vader? Kylo Ren. Yoda? Maz Kanata. Boba Fett? Captain Phasma. Moff Tarkin? General Hux. R2-D2? BB-8. Luke/Leia/Han? Rey/Finn/Poe. All your favourite characters have been replaced and all the events in the originals have been trivialised as pointless. The prequels never did that.

Chris Carbine I was seven when it came out, and was already a fan of the original films, so phantom menace blew my mind, looking back now it for the most part it is cheesy and over the top, with bad dialogue but then so are all the others. Also hands down best duelling in the series.

Brian Blessed could have been a Jedi? What a missed opportunity. This video doesn't mention what I think is his greatest performance; Long John Silver in Disney's Return to Treasure Island. Not only the best pirate I've EVER seen, but some of the most phenomenal acting in general. (If you remember the series, the choreography is not his fault; I mean he literally had one leg tied back). This video shows how wacky he can be, and boy does Boss Nass bug me, but Brian Blessed gets loads of respect for a reason. Side note, he's close friends with Patrick Stewart. I'd love to be in a room with those two.

I'm sorry this is a terrible interview and it's obvious that you won't become popular. You need to interrupt the interviewee much more often (ideally midway through every answer or story) and need to cut to your face for reaction shots at least once every 7-8 seconds (the pros do once every 5). You never know though, keep at it though man and you just might make it.

Interrupt the interviewee more often? You mean the thing that Fallon gets constantly criticized for? People wanna see and hear the person being interviewed. The interviewer is supposed to disappear and be a vehicle for the answers to come out.
