They are both equally 10/10 pedals. Really just depends on the context. They complement each other well to have because they tend to always contrast each other so it's nice to have the option. They react different with each combo of variables, from amp, to guitar, to pickups, to style etc.
Lots of work goes into these videos to share a really thorough comparison between these pedals with a variety of amps. Appreciate it! My main rig is a JVM that I boost with an Airis Effects Savage Drive but I have TS9's kicking around too, that I've compared back and forth as well. I love comparing drive pedals and checking out the subtle differences between them and appreciate the Marshall comparisons as I also have one of the newer DSLs and used to have a TSL before I sold it for my JVM. @@EugeValovirta230V seems that only the 5150 was able to keep the loose/boomy low-end of the Maxon somewhat tight, during the metal parts. Just got an SD-1 myself thanks to your videos. 😁

you said it. don't go sd1 with a high gain compressed amps like peavey,evh or engl, sounds like shit on those. Maxon 808 or similair pedal on engl or evh is awesome, doesn't cut as much bass. Marshall is a bit more lose and gets better with a tighter pedal and the newer amps sound more tight and need a less colouring pedal and more of a transparant boost to just squish it up to a usable saturated high gain sound.
Euge, i always come to your channel to check out marshall or simular amp demos. And usually its kick ass hardrock/metal type tones. But i dig your funky and bluesy tones on the strat. Sounds great
Wow, I was going to get the OD808, but you've sold me on the SD-1. Just curious, have you tried the Maxon OD808X? It sounds a bit brighter, aggressive and less muffled compared to the OD808... I wonder how it compares to the SD-1.

My friend tried a modern sd-1 (2014 not Japan) with jcm800 badboy from early 80s infront of me...and sounded so bad that Boss buffer sound, I know theres a debate on Japan VS modern, but can there be such a difference😮😮...i havn't tried old sd-1.
I have them from four different decades made in Japan, Taiwan & Malaysia and they’re all the same. If someone shows me a person who honestly hears a ”buffer sound” with 100 watt Marshall cranked and SD-1 in front of it hitting it hard…well…I’ll show Elton John’s wife to that person.

A question or opinion: what combination do you consider best? 1- mooer 005 with SD-1 or with Ibanez TS mini 2- mooer 011 with sd-1 or withbanaz TS mini I would appreciate opinions and even how you would place the potentiometers of each of the pedals. My current gear for rehearsals and live shows is: Gibson les paul trad 2010/PRS SE Akesson - TC politune 3 - TS mini- SD1- mooer 011 cali dual - mooer 005 - booster - tc Electronic Alter Ego 1 and each output of this last pedal: 1- one output goes to the seymour duncan 170 - Mesa 2x12 V30 2-mooer radar. Very nice video Euge, informative and you let the sound do the talking! I really like your tone with the wah-wah. So juicy! My favorite OD is still MXR 77 Custom Badass OD, maybe because of the name.
I feel that the Sd-1 tend to make the Marshall feel just like.. more? More distortion, more open, more defined, and the tube screamer type pedals shape the sound to a more compressed "modern" sound. They both are great for certain situations I actually have both in my pedalboard and use use them according to my mood.
I use Sd-1 for years. Just a legendary pedal. But decided to try something different. Bought Maxon St9 pro+. Because of Eric Rutan from Hate Eternal... Sounds really heavy 🤘🤘🤘 Great video as always. Rock on!

I just bought a 808 for a deal I couldn't resist, sight unheard. Entered a search and low and behold, my trusted tester has run it through its paces! To my ears, and in your clips the difference is pretty minimal and like the OD1, the 808 adds that *klak klak" thing that makes these pedals so useful as well as rolling off some lows. I tried it out last night but unfortunately my amp isn't really a good pedal platform but using it on both the FAT and CRUNCH settings on CH1 set to low onset of clip and even crunchier setting seemed to get me closer to what I was looking for. Only ran my LTD with EMGs through it so next is vintage strat, P90 on my Reverend and Joe Bardens on my MIM Frankenstrat. I have a very old 80's OD-1 that I bought in the 90s for like $40 as well but it's in storage 400 miles away. I love that pedal but man, its noisey as hell!

Great comparison video again, mate. Despite loving the old Maxon/Ibanez pedals, I have always prefered the SD-1 over the TS's. I find them having a wider tonal range with its very effective tone knob, at least more than the TS's. That being said, I love the old 9-series and 10-series (Power Series) Ibanez pedals. I still have quite a few of them. I've just never been a particular fan of the TS. :) Have a great week, buddy!

Thanks! I’d go with Boss SD-1 ’cos I’ve used that for pretty much everything I’ve done and it just does the job really well especially with an 800. Cab wise I’d go with some Marshall loaded with Vintage speakers. No idea if Slayer used those but I like them a lot especially for tight rock / metal.
As a long time OD808 user, I find it to sound a lot clearer than the SD-1, however, I like the perceived low mid boost of the SD-1 a lot. And after watching so many of your videos and leaving a couple of comments, I finally decided to subscribe.
@@EugeValovirta230V In my opinion, one can never have enough variety in OD pedals. There are too many interesting pedals out there... But yes, the SD-1 sounds amazing and I should definitely add one to my arsenal... For 59€ it’s almost a steal...
i was thinking of getting an od808 for my 6505+ but it's really mid-high heavy amp to begin with so i think i might stick with sd-1. Keeps some low dynamics.
Also since the late 90s, I have boosted almost exactly like you. I have a Keeley modded Boss SD1. I crank the Level and barely crack open the Gain. Just enough to let out a bit of the asymmetrical clipping, but way before it turns into a gainy mess. I personally think the SD1 sounds better than a typical TS9 style pedal for hard rock and metal tones. Has that extra bite.
I guess there could be some difference between individual ones but in general, in my experience, they sound pretty much the same. At least between the two 808s I have and this particular Maxon I used on the video.

I always keeping coming back to my SD1. The maxon is good and all but I prefer the bright attack of the Boss, I guess the 808 would be better suited to a thinner sounding amp?
Somehow i think i'm too stupid to boost my amp. I'm setting my jcm to a tone where i think "nice, but could use a bit more punch", so i put a sd-1 into the loop - and all it does is lower the volume and make it sound shitty. Even with the level knob all the way up and drive all the way down. What's happening?
Effect loop is after preamp & before power amp so that’s for time based effects. To boost an amp you have to put the pedal in front of the amp so that the preamp (tubes) gets a boosted signal 😎. Good! 👌😊 I have both and they’re pretty much the same. I use the old Japan one at my studio and a new Taiwan made on my live board. I also have the SD-1 waza at my studio and they all sound like SD-1 😎👌.

I sadly must say, i Heard no difference, maybe a little bit on the clean Chanel. But then i said to me, nothing noticeable that 80 Price expensive that justifies it. I Sold the ibanez, but i will Definitely try the boss sd 1. 😅 Very much looking forward to more Videos Euge 🙂
Seems like (in this video, and my personal hands-own experience) - Marshall's love the SD1. 5150's enjoy the TubeScreamer style more. 🤔 I love my SD1's ! I've got two, one stays on the board/main rig and the other I run with a battery so I can have it when moving from amp to amp around my music room/house.
disagree, maybe og 5150/6505's an od808 is preferred, but 5150 II/6505+ you want more low end cause the amps have less to begin with. an od808 on a 6505+ cuts lows haaard.

I sometimes use my tone knobs and pickup selector as a poor man's clean channel on my ENGL since i'm too cheap to buy a footswitch for it. Rolling back the tone on the neck pickup helps with that a little.

Hey Euge. A good idea would be to compare these boosts with an EQ pedal (I think you have the boss one) acting as a boost (placed in front in the signal chain). I use an MXR 10 band clone with the gain maxed and the frequency sliders to taste (e.g. an inverse "smile" with a peak at around 1-2 KHz is relatively close to TS9 I think). I find that the OD808/TS9 are a bit middy for my taste so the EQ pedal allows me to dial some bass back in and/or boost certain mid frequencies. Another interesting test would be to use the EQ pedal in the loop to boost the preamp signal (without a boost in front), or some boost in front with the EQ in the loop to shape the signal before it hits the power section...:) Great work as always!!

The SD1 sounds warmer and smoother while the Maxon is more aggressive. Both great tones. I only have an SD1 but I should get a true tubescreamer at some point. I only use a plugin or my FM3 for tubescreamer tones 👍

I think I used one on Shining’s IX album. We had several ods in the studio with Peter Huss and I think we both ended up using that one. At least on some songs but can’t say for sure.
Nice demo! I have both pedals and you're right, the OD-808 is too smooth. If you try the Ibanez TS-9 it cuts the lows better and it has a little more brightness than the 808, but not as bright as the SD-1, still pushing the mids.
Huge Lightning Power? That’s a great name… you should incorporate that, or HLP, into your career somehow. Maybe HLP could be a cool logo for your guitar’s highest fret marker.
I was watching ola do an OD shootout into a mesa dual rec, and he lamented the sd1 for not changing forever, but then picked the ts9... which also hasn't changed in forever, but didn't really have the self awareness I suppose. In the mix I honestly couldn't really tell the difference, noodling I just felt like the sd1 had more top end, but it wasn't extreme, I'm sure the main differences come in playing them.
@@EugeValovirta230V yes, it has less high end roll-off. Doesn't make a lot of difference if you use it as a boost in an already distorted amp, on a clean amp it's more obvious.
I think the OD808 was better with the 5150 and it seems many producers would agree. I liked both pedals with the 800 but the SD-1 sounded better at least with those amp settings.

The sd1 is my fave since im using humbuckers guitar, but if i use single coil my choice is the maxon od 808 or other ts pedal. I still dont understand why metal player using maxon than the sd1 , the maxon can keep up with fast riffing, its just to bluuuuuuurrrpppp not tight.
I’ve wondered the same. I’ve actually used the red OD808 Extreme on one Shining album and the big 808 (whatever it was called) on Cyhra’s latest album on some tracks. Especially the red one is almost like SD-1 👌.
couldn't hear much of anything different in a mix but solo little more lows in the boss but different amps like different pedals especially Marshall likes sd1 the 5150 got really full on the 808 . atleast through RU-vid on my headphones
i feel your pain... had a 2203, 2204, 2203 kerry king sig and a jcm800 bass amp modded to 2203 (new circuitboard installed), should have kept one at least, haha

Coincidentally, I just compared these two yesterday with my new Engl Artist Edition 50 head. The SD-1 cuts a little bit too much low end for this amp (harmonics cover up the fundamental note when playing lower power chords), but the OD808 sounds too warm, smooth und mushy. Just ordered a TS9 and hope it's the happy medium. :-)
Thanks for making me hear the differences. I detected the marginal extra high end in the SD-1. With a big of EQ there's barely any difference to the end result.
Yeah it can do that with some amps and that’s why I have the JHS Bonsai on my studio pedalboard. It has 9 different screamers (808, 9, 10, Keeley modded 808 etc.) and it’s just awesome 👌.
@@EugeValovirta230V Turns out it wasn‘t the SD-1‘s fault. Apparently my strings were dead as a doornail, haha. I changed them and now the amp sounds glorious with my good old SD-1.
Yup...I agree. Your can't beat an SD-1 for driving a Marshall (EL34 and alike) amp/humbuckers.. TS's seem to emphasize and add mids to those which tend to be missing sometimes with 6L6's/single coils.
