BOSS #5 VS PREMIUM STEEL #2. One and Done. The Goose Wizard Cory Loeffler from the DRC Call Company kicks back in the snow for late season honker hunting, armed with a Franchi Affinity 20 gauge and the 3” copper-plated Boss #5's. With Bret Amundson from Sporting Journal Radio on the camera, birds are ranged using the Vortex Fury range-finding binoculars as the shot happens. With the distance known, they head back home and set up a pattern board to see exactly what the pattern looked like compared to another premium #2 steel shot. You may never shoot a 12 gauge again after watching this video.
Video shot and produced by Bret Amundson, Mikaba Media

I needed to see this I just swapped to the old faithful 20 gauge and am going to stick with it been hung up on the 4 shot or the 5shot for the 20 gauge didn’t know if the number 5s would kill mallards in the late season as well as the 4s would

Great vid. I have had poor luck with a 20 ga and #2 Steel on geese. Like your pattern, bridging and galling keep the big pellets from doing well in a little 20. Love the Boss, but #5 is small shot for a goose......still, you did it.

Been shooting boss 3 years. Hunted sayginaw bay with friends. We all limited out one morning I used 2 3/4 #3/5s all weekend. My buddies all used 3 1/2 steel bb' and almost every diver duck we shot they needed to shoot 2 and 3 times do kill a downed bird my one shot boss 3/5's shot further and I had far less cripples than them. They work and work well.

When you shoot the boss can you use a lead choke or must it be steel choke only? Bismuth?
@brianfyffe6451

Bismuth is as soft as lead. Factory chokes work fine. Aftermarket chokes are better in my experience though.

Miss leading, your comparing 5 shot with more pellets to 2 shot with less pellets. Of course it’s going to have more pellets on target. Boss #5 has 221 pellets vs federal steel #2 has 109 pellets.
@drccallco.100
@drccallco.100 3 года назад
Jacob, you are exactly right. I’m showing you that you can shoot Copper plated Bismuth #5 that gives you 221 pellets vs 109 pellets of steel and maintain similar KE. The KE was the dependent variable, the pattern density was the independent variable. Not trying to mislead. Sorry about that. I’ll explain it better next time. Thanks for watching 👍🏼👍🏼

Steel has a density of 7.8 g/c3 while bismuth has a density of 9.6 g/c3. Like Cory said below, it allows you to shoot a smaller pellet size thus increasing the number of pellets and ultimately improving pattern density.
@saltcreekammo
@saltcreekammo 3 года назад
@@benbrettingen9972 a 1 ounce payload of #4 steel has around 190-195 pellets. Moving at 1500 FPS or faster and you’ll have something just as lethal as the boss #5’s moving at 1350 FPS. This bismuth and tungsten stuff is a huge money grab. Steel can be lethal if you know how to go about it.

@kross1261
@kross1261 3 года назад
@@saltcreekammo you’re absolutely right when comparing bismuth to steel. Same loads bismuth is a little denser but moving 150-200 FPS slower with the Boss. What are you gaining? Very little imo and it usually doesn’t pattern as well. Now I shoot tungsten at large late season honkers. It’s density is 19.3 and moving 1500-1625 FPS depending on the load. It’s legit.

I'm sold on boss shells for sure, however this is a dumb test. That goose was dead if you did your part with those #2 steel shells, and for #2 steel out of a 20 guage it wasn't all that bad of a pattern. Obviously #5 shell patterns are going to be far more dense. BTW - Get this stuff to Canada!!

I appreciate all of the testing videos, except for the fact that you're making me spend all kinds of money! Haha. I thought the steel actually patterned pretty well, especially when you consider those 2's probably have about 80 less pellets than those BOSS 5's. If the BOSS 5's penetrate as well as the steel 2's though, that's saying something.

Some of it says it does on the box. But that's not entirely true. Most are speed tested at 70-85 F* ... NOT realistic hunting temperatures. Also it is very light, so it loses speed out of the barrel very fast.

I've been a die hard waterfowl hunter for over 30 years.. I'll stick to my Remington SP 10 ga shooting Federal Black Cloud in BB out of my 720 Terror Choke Tube for geese & my Browning gold 12ga shooting Federal Black Cloud in #3's out of my Pattern Master Code Black Duck.. Both setups are lights out devastating on waterfowl..

All these premium shot shells are a joke/money grab. Get yourself a good choke tube and some 3in steel #1 shot and you can consistently kill any waterfowl in the world out to 45 yards. Any further than that and your sky busting or not letting the birds work.
@drccallco.100
@drccallco.100 3 года назад
Pattern your gun so you honestly know what that stuff looks like at 45 yds. The results will be less than lethal and less than impressive. To each their own. Steel is light and super hard. Normally doesn't pattern worth a crap, especially at 45 yds.
@BackwoodsMayhem
@BackwoodsMayhem 3 года назад
@@drccallco.100 I actually spent a lot of time patterning my gun. I run a pattern master code black goose choke out of a benelli super Vinci. And it is absolutely lethal out to 45 yards with Winchester 3in BB for geese and 3in #1 for ducks. Now I will say that SOME of these premium shells will pattern slightly better but is that worth double the cost for 20% less shells? Absolutely not. Our group picks up a few hundred dead birds a year and not one of them has ever been upset or even noticed that they were killed stone dead with plain old steel shot.

I sure do it’s called miss leading marketing! Shot size to shot size. Now here’s the real kicker just imagine boss shot is a denser shot witch it is. Vs steel with less density. And since bismuth you can definitely constrict down to xxf vs steel witch you can not! Marketing is all it is. Each shotgun patterns different with different sizes, speed, density. Proven fact. I’m not dissin boss because I shoot it myself. This is just false information. 3 shot sizes smaller better density in the pattern probably same penetration or just slightly better on ballistics Gelatin
