From where I came from no one danced to this band. What we did was drive down a street at night with the windows rolled down and turned up the Pioneer radio as far as the knob would go to some Jensen 6x9’s speakers. When the transition from Foreplay to Long Time would hit, it was goosebumps every time. This album created so many great memories as teenagers. Back where no cell phones, no social media, no auto tune and life was so much simpler. I was lucky enough to live through those years and wish we could all experience what that was like. Today just feels like everything is artificial.

You're speaking my language. I actually made boxes in high school wood shop to mount my speakers into and put them in the back seat of my 72 Nova SS. Had enough speaker wire to take them out and place them on the top of the car when parked with a group of other friends cars, we drank beer, partied and listened to music into the night. God, I miss those days.

Boston, Rush, Aerosmith, Kansas, Van Halen, Foreigner, Toto, Journey, Zeppelin, the Who, Sabbath, Supertramp, Queen, Pink Floyd, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer and so many, many more, all at their best. All are still played to this day. Do you think 50 years from now anyone is going to listen to the garbage that's put out today? NO. We will still be listening to what came out in the 1970's though.

That was the thing about songs like this, is that you didn't really dance. A new album would come out and all the high school kids would go to the house of the person who first got the album, and you would sit around and listen to the whole album. That's why these old songs have the ability to be so dramatic, because they can take it way back, and slow it down, and go soft, even silent for a moment, and then when they bring the noise and the tempo back, the contrast to the slow or quiet parts has a bigger kick and emotional effect. But the speeding up and slowing down, all the changes are kind of tough to dance to. You would be grooving along, and all of a sudden it would slow down and everyone would be on the dance floor just looking at each other if you tried to dance to it. Plenty of good songs to dance to in the 70's, but a lot of these albums were just experienced in a different way. It was an event when the new Boston or Stevie Wonder album came out, and a bunch of guys would end up in someone's basement on beanbag chairs, looking at black light posters, smelling incense, and just listening.

Two thoughts about this album, after 40+ years of listening to it: 1) Use it to "calibrate" your headphones. If this doesn't sound absolutely delicious in them, throw them away. 2) Use it to "calibrate" your speakers, as loud as possible. If this doesn't sound absolutely delicious with them, throw them away.

My Brotha's!!👍I appreciate your combined musical knowledge & your frank commentary when listening to "new" things. It makes me feel like I'm in the room along with you and listening to songs & artists again for the first time. If it hasn't been suggested already, I'd like to offer a song/artist recommendation to you: since you both clearly dig Boston, please give a listen to the band ToTo. The lead vocalist also has that twangy late-seventies/eighties sound and I think you'd enjoy it best in their song called "Hold the Line". I'm not a die-hard ToTo fan, but I've always liked that track for the driving beat, catchy hook, awesome drumming & instrumental line-up...all backed throughout by solid rock&roll guitar. To the subscribers out there reading this comment & who ARE die-hard ToTo fans, I hope I used the right language to describe the band & their sound (please correct me if I didn't get that stuff quite right)---but I think you guys will love what you hear. Great reaction and some very insightful commentary as well. Thanks for sharing. This album, song, band is really just three guys. Tom Scholz was an MIT engineer working for a phot corporation. He wrote, composed, engineered and recorded this album in his basement on equipment he bought used, borrowed or created, patented and built himself. Tom plays classical guitar, 12 string guitar, lead electric guitar, rhythm electric guitar, bass and organ on this album, Brad Delp is the vocalist and sang lead vocals, backup vocals and did all the harmonies himself. Tom hired a friend to play the drums. So what you hear is really Tom playing the music Brad singing and Sib drumming. The entire albums is back to back bangers. In my opinion the greatest debut album of all time. Also this album was recorded using the patented pedal system Tom created which allowed him to switch tones on his guitar without changing guitars. Now every single professional guitarist and bassist uses a version of this system he invented and debuted on this album. Enjoy, Chris.

There is one, single voice. One vocalist ...NOT, just, on THIS song, but: this ENTIRE album. ALL vocals are sung by the indelibly GREAT (and horribly missed!! 😭😭😭😭): Mr. Brad Delp. Delp is, still., one of the more highly-underappreciated (and very unfairly so!) vocalists in the rock canon. Brad Delp doubles every vocal (and triples/quads. some, at least) and sings EVERY harmony as well as (of course) every note in the lead parts. All of the voices on Boston are: Brad Delp's voice. the guy was IMMACULATE! --ALso: too many fools have this going "thang" that: "Tom Scholz plays everything on this album.../recorded this, entire, album, totally 'by himself'..." which is a falsehood. Flat-out: untrue and inaccurate. He recorded a majority of it, himself, yes. HOWEVER: He needed assistance in the studio (just to operate tape machines and set-up mics. &, just, run lines and so forth!)-that ALONE! AND: in point-of-fact: he wasn't as good of a guitarist as he needed himself to be. He was the "second tier player" in the band, at this time, anyway-behind Mr. Barry Goudreau [pronounced: "good-row']. -A lot of fans (particularly: younger ones) will try to argue this point or will refuse to know, or accept, it. ! ...and by SAYING any of this: I am in NO WAY saying that, 'somehow': "Tom Scholz sucked"-either as a guitarist OR anything else! No! If someone THINKS that they read that: they are not reading correctly or are interpreting their own internment emotions and inserting them into what I said, instead! ...but: the fact-of-the-matter is that" Tom Scholz was an electrical & mechanical engineer. He was an organist and keyboard player and somewhat 'new"(-ish) to guitar. Barry Goudreau was the "old pro." and the higher-caliber player. Arguably: Scholz reached the same level of skill (as Goudreau has, here) some time in the later '80s (like when he was working on Third Stage). ...but: even on THAT album and tour, he preferred to have a "number one" other than him. [On Third Stage it was: Gary Pihl -who a lot of people (myslef included!) knew from his stint in Sammy Hagar's solo band-early-to-mid-'80s -This was, because: Scholz had fired Barry Goudreau in the interim.🤦🙄🙄] Goudreau plays all three of the solos on this and, I believe, he does the acoustic, chorus, parts, as well (but that may be Scholz, also-I forgot my research on that, now -Apologies!🤷). Scholz does "the big, rock chords," but: then-again: he did spend a long time to get things to sound the way he felt they should (even if his skill-level wasn't, quite, up-to the level that would have allowed him to "rip things out, one or two a day," or something...) ...Goudreau, actually, would have helped him do it faster (if Scholz had allowed Barry to!🤷🤦). Barry Goudreau, also, does the solo on: "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" (The one new song, that the band wrote, while they were sitting out in the studio, in Cali., faking like the band was making the album THERE -while Scholz was rewiring, learning how to record and, then, re-recording demo stuff in his basement, back in Massachusetts. -So: the ONE song on this album that wasn't a version of a prior demo. from previous work/older snogs, already worked-through and "polished" -somewhat- by the band, live and via demo. tapes.)-). Scholz's big contributions (to this song and, by my measure: this ALBUM) are: his great organ parts. He gets sonic erections out of keyboards and oragns, here ! No doubt, whatsoever!😛 🤘🤘 ...But: Yes: the entire album is gold. (or: "Diamond" or whatever😛😜) ...but I mean: quality- and content-wise: this is SUCH a top-tier album that: they, practically, had to move the top tier UP a notch when it came out (so it could sit in its appropriate place!).🤘⚡⚡-No JOKE! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

For more of that Hammond organ, listen to "Smokin'". For IMO the best guitar arrangement, listen to "Hitch a Ride". All on the same debut album from 1976, mostly recorded in a DYI basement studio in Watertown, Mass. Pure genius!

As soon as I heard the album and back then what you did was study the cover / back to death and when I spotted the guitar as a spaceship it made total sense even to that 12 years old. ITS AN INTERGALACTIC SOUND......

To put them into proper perspective and to show just how much the record industry itself has always been sellouts and biased, at the 1977 Grammy Awards, keep in mind that this was an awards show for 1976 releases, Boston had the highest selling debut album of all time 17 million which is now second place, Guns N Roses debut sold 18 million, anyway Boston LOST best new artist that year to......Starlight Vocal Band and I damn well know very few of you ever heard of them but they were more squeaky clean but their only hit was "Afternoon Delight" which is NOT so squeaky clean but they looked and sounded like the part, a sidenote CBS sued the Band for breech of contract which they lost and I'm pretty sure why Boston is not in the Hall of Fame.

I knew you guys would def appreciate the engineering/mixing/etc. on this one. This entire album is sonically superior to almost everything else at the time. F'ing Tom Scholtz! One man wrecking crew on this beast...almost. Gotta give it up for Brad Delp.

Boston like many rock bands of the early 70's were influenced by Yes, and you hear it in their songs producing several songs into one song with many transitions. Also, Boston are influenced by the funk music of the 60's mostly Sly & The Family Stones and the harmonies of the Super Folk Rock band, Crosby Stills Nash & Young and Three Dog Night, especially Three Dog Night. Now, those brothers can sang....you guy to react to those 1968 hit, "One," studio version.....or "Eli's Coming. " They were vocally a heavy influenced on Rock bands such as Boston and Kansas in the 70's.

There's a 4-minute "bonus feature" from the PBS "Soundbreaking" (which - if you haven't seen - you two would probably enjoy) series where Tom Scholz takes the crew into his dark, dusty studio to perform "Foreplay" on the B3 - and talk about the organ. Worth watching, IMO. A search on his name and B3 will bring it up on YT (I know some contributors don't like links put in their comments threads, so I didn't).
